Raising Canes : The Road Ahead Or The Road Behind

raising canes miami hurricanes 3 penny films allcanesblog.comBelow is the final ‘Raising Canes’ episode for the 2012 football season, breaking down the Miami Hurricanes’ 52-45 win over the Duke Blue Devils at Wallace Wade Stadium. Some great in-game footage and post-game celebrating, as well as Al Golden reciting the George Moriarty poem, “The Road Ahead Or The Road Behind”, which was a favorite of UCLA basketball legend John Wooden. The poem reads as follows:

So you and I know deeper down there is a chance to win the crown,
But when we fail to give our best, we simply haven’t met the test
Of giving all and saving none until the game is really won.
Of showing what is meant by grit, of fighting on when others quit,

Of playing through not letting up, it’s bearing down that wins the cup.
Of taking it and taking more until we gain the winning score,
Of dreaming there’s a goal ahead, of hoping when our dreams are dead,
Of praying when our hopes have fled. Yet, losing, not afraid to fall,

If bravely we have given all, for who can ask more of a man
than giving all, it seems to me, is not so far from – Victory.
And so the fates are seldom wrong, no matter how they twist and wind,

It’s you and I who make our fates, we open up or close the gates,
On the Road Ahead or the Road Behind.

  1. Off topic, but I have to bitch about the Orange Bowl and the BCS. Maybe it’s due to geography, but why does the Orange Bowl ALWAYS have the worst match-up/tie-ins? I don’t give a damn about FSU at all, but the ACC as a conference and The Orange Bowl as a committee needs to break away from being stuck with the Big East. We will continue to be lumped in with them (The Big East) as a weak conference as long as we are associated with them. This year The Orange Bowl is FSU against Northern Illinois. Are you serious? Who gets excited about that? It’s not much better than if we got stuck with Louisville. I don’t know what will happen with the playoffs starting in 2014, but The ACC and The Orange Bowl need to create a better alliance. Notre Dame can take the place of an ACC team, so that doesn’t address my issue. The league is in danger of being left without a chair while the Big Ten teams with the PAC 12 and the Big 12 teams with the SEC. We should have been pre-emptive, as with conference reallignment. As I have said in the past, I hope Miami/Shalala are looking ahead and doing what is best for us.

    1. John – I think things are going to shake out in the coming years. Honestly, the lone upside to Miami’s decline right now is the fact it’s happening when college football is a disaster.

Honestly, could you imagine not self-imposing this year, somehow beating Florida State in Charlotte … and the reward is a ‘home’ game against Northern Freakin’ Illinois? Like you said, even Louisville would’ve been no prize.

Bigger than the ACC tie-in is the fact that better teams didn’t reach the BCS, yet NIU, for political reasons, did. Georgia? LSU? Texas A&M? South Carolina? Oklahoma? Put any of them in the Orange against Florida State as an at-large and you have a stellar match-up that will sell tickets. ALL were ranked higher than Northern Illinois and all have two losses to NIU’s one — yet all played real competition, that would’ve left NIU a 3-9 squad if facing that talent.

The whole system sucks and hopefully its better by the time the Canes are back in the hunt.

  2. Both Cane bUbba’s need to quite bytching and whinning, like a couple of haughty, SELF-ENTITED Good Ol’ Boy’s.

Chit, DON’T blame Northern Illinois, because they PLAYED by the governing rules of the B.C.S. Eh. What say.

By the way, seeing that Cane fan is taking shots at TINY N.I.U. With Miami’s ATROCIOUS defense, I WOULDN’T be the least bit surprise to see TINY N.I.U. defeat Goldy’s squad on a nuetral field!

Matter of fact, I can confidently say N.I.U. would defeat the Canes on a nuetral field

Again, it’s ALL BOUT’ THE DEFENSE. Or, is that lack of defense in a Orange nd’ Green sort of fashion.

    Bon jour et Bon soir

  3. Sounds like this weekend is a big recruiting visit weekend with some prospects on campus. Hopefully we can close the deal on some of these guys. This will be an important class, with such small numbers. I saw Bryant decommitted this week, but the kid has always had the wandering eye. It is what it is. We want guys who want to be here, and not just jumping on a bandwagon of the flavor of the month team. We don’t need drama at this point. The staff needs to pound the trail and get the top guys in here in this class and future classes to come. Get the buzz back and make The U a destination school again. Close strong and work on ’14 and maybe even some ’15 guys.
