The Canes jumped on the Ramblin’ Wreck early, never let up and piled on late, while junior slugger David Thompson put on a performance that could’ve been deemed “excessive force”.
Thompson—continuing his bid for ACC Player of the Year—crushed three home runs in a nine-RBI performance, as Miami steamrolled its way to a 22-1 victory, clinching the series and looking like one of the hottest teams in the nation as the postseason approaches.
Thompson leads the nation with 77 RBI and leads the conference with 18 home runs—his first of the day coming in the opening frame. He connected with another in the fifth and capped it off with a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh, one day after an 0-for-3 performance against the Yellow Jackets.
Eleven different Hurricanes recorded at least one hit in the offensive explosion, while six recorded multi-hit performances. Thompson recorded four hits and was followed by three apiece from Brandon Lopez, Johnny Ruiz. Meanwhile, Zack Collins had three RBI, while Ruiz and Jacob Heyward were responsible for two each.
Lost in the 21-hit affair, another stellar pitching performance from a Miami hurler as Andrew Suarez lasted six innings, gave up four hits, one run and struck out six.
Daniel Briggi and Daniel Sayles combined to shut down the seventh, while Ryan Otero and Sam Abrams did an inning apiece—all four relievers keeping Georgia Tech hitless and combining for three strikeouts.
The Canes and Yellow Jackets will do it one more time this weekend, with the first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. ET on Saturday at Mark Light Field as UM looks for the sweep and a twelfth-straight victory.
