Former Canes venting on Facebook…

I mentioned a few weeks back that it was my intent to no longer pile on in this blog or maliciously rip past players and coaches. I will do my best to stick to my word.

In the case of social networking and former players venting or sharing their opinions, that’s a different ballgame.

Saw the above screen capture on Facebook earlier and wanted to post here. File this one under “straight from the horse’s mouth” as former Miami offensive lineman Reggie Youngblood had some choice words about the Canes offense on Monday night.

“So Mark Whipple couldn’t be at UM while I was there… just my luck. :/”

Pretty much says it all, eh? Youngblood came to Miami a five-star prospect out of Texas and left undrafted. A similar fate to quarterback Kyle Wright – another can’t miss prospect whose career was much maligned due to working with three different offense coordinators, none of which could hold a candle to Whipple.

Wright’s post regarding Youngblood’s Whipple thoughts: “S**t, you’re telling me…”

Former Miami back up linebacker Eric Houston: “… Damn … :(“

Son of Randy and one-year offensive lineman Xavier Shannon: “I feel the same way.”

Proof is in the pudding, people. I don’t even need to trash Dan Werner, Rich Olson/Todd Berry or Patrick Nix… as former Canes are taking the Intraweb to do it for me.

Sorry you old schoolers missed out on the rising by a season. All of you deserved a better experience at The U and were done in by nothing more than bad timing.

  1. Not sure this is real. It's trendy for creative-types to make a fake FB feed after a big event. See Slate for their weekly fake FB feed

  2. Looks pretty real to me. Looked up everyone on that page and comments thread and it all matches up. Also saw that some other online folk chimed in (folks friends with Reggie and what not) and confirmed it's real.

If this was a fake, I'd expect something a bit more malicious than what was posted there. All in all this is a pretty tame thread. You'd also expect it to be started by a skills player – not an offensive lineman.

  3. I read this on another canes site and I feel bad for the poor guys. Their football careers maybe could have been totally different had we gone with a different choice instead of Patrik Piss(I mean Nix). On the other hand though everything happens for a reason. At least when we rise back to dominance they can say that they at least were part of the Hurricanes football squad in order to have some sort of connection to these young greats.

  4. As much as Whipple is better than the last few coordinators, Kyle Wright couldn't get out of his own way. I was watching the Dolphins final preseason game against New Orleans and every time they sacked Joey Harrington it reminded me of Kyle Wright holding onto the ball to long and having horrible pocket presence. And Kyle was this bad at the college level. At least Harrington didn't crap out until he got to the NFL.

  5. It's real. Joe Girardi also was a former lineman 2005-2007 I believe (walk-on).

There was a lot of praise for Jacory and heated talk about Kyle, Marve, and Kirby in my car ride home yesterday—but you have to wonder they would have played out with Whipple.

  6. 305,

This is hilarious (and sad). One remark about the FSU game: Spence was terrible. Every big run went to Spence's side, where he either was engulfed by a pulling lineman or took a bad angle. Yeah he's small, but he needs to learn how to be in position to at least disrupt the runner. Between that and the poor coverage of FSU's TE on the first touchdown, he had a very bad game.

This type of play against GT can kill our chances for a win — and don't think Paul Johnson won't notice.

Sorry to bitch, but I think identifying our weaknesses is a good thing — as well as we played, there's room for improvement.

  7. About Kyle: A QB can only develop if someone is developing him.

I liken Kyle's career to Jason Campbell's — both had promising futures after success at a lower level (Wright coming out of HS, Campbell coming from Auburn), but both withered on the vine because of bad coaching and constantly changing offensive philosophies. I don't think any Canes fan should hate Kyle. He gave us his best. It's sad that the coaches didn't do right by him.

  8. As a former Military person, All I can say is that YOU have to be disciplined and WORK hard…If Coker gave me an option of being cuddled in practice, I would have told him that WE HAD to work hard and COMPETE in practice….Why doesn't anyone complain about the lack of competition and STARTING positions being promised and given, instead of won!!

  9. I feel bad for all those former Canes that came in the midst of CHANGE. Often times we forget that with change comes either some serious growing pains or some steps backward. In our case the multiple offensive coordinators, year in and year out, hurt us bad.

Give credit to Randy Shannon for turning this thing around. But also credit is due to those players who still fought and played hard despite the changes in coordinators.

  10. Displaced Cane,

Jason Campbell's 4 years on the Plains had him under four different offensive coordinators; 2001 Mazzone, 2002 Petrino, 2003 Nall and 2004 Borges. Campbell was able to get it done because he had players around him and he was a good quarterback. Now contrast Wright. 2005 Werner, 2006 Olson and 2007 Nix. No real players and we all know about the coaches. Did Wright have the physical attributes to be a good quarterback? I think so. What he lacked was the confidence or the "it factor" to be successful. Would have helped also if his receivers could hold onto the ball.

  11. I don't hate Kyle Wright, and I doo feel a litle bad for him. He came here w/all the promise in the world and it just evaporated.

I can't blame these guys for feeling the way they feel also. They got sold the Coker bill of goods and it might have really changed the direction their lives went. And while its true that if a player has the skill he should be able to get noticed regardless of how good/bad his team is (Jay Cutler played at Vandy who didn't have a winning record in any of his years there), the coaches still nedd to provide SOME direction, and it appears that this was completely lacking for these guys.

    Go Canes.
