Seven new Canes have arrived on campus – and hopefully that number grows in the coming days as any early enrollees will count towards last year’s recruiting haul. Miami can only sign twenty-five newcomers on National Signing Day (February 1st), so the more the merrier between now and then.
The seven newbies are quarterbacks Preston Dewey and Gray Crow, offensive linemen Ereck Flowers and Taylor Gadbois, linebackers Raphael Kirby and Josh Witt, as well as defensive back and junior college transfer, Ladarius Gunter.
Dewey and Crow have received the most headlines to date as UM attempts to re-establish itself at Quarterback U, but the gem of this group of seven might be Kirby, the linebacker from Stone Mountain, GA who was the fourth-ranked outside linebacker (Rivals.com) and is listed as the 89th best overall prospect in the nation.
Dewey is listed as the 133rd best overall and is also a highly-recruited athlete, a four-star talent who shone at the Elite 11 Camp hosted by TCU. Crow is considered a three-star prospect and isn’t as decorated at Dewey, but made a name for himself at Countryside High School in Tampa.
As for the others, Flowers comes to Miami from local Norland High and is a four-star prospect, listed as the 200th best overall athlete while Gadbois, the other offensive lineman, comes to Coral Gables from Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia.
Witt, a linebacker from nearby Weston, earned First-Team All-Broward County honors this past season, while Gunter, the lone JUCO in this bunch, brings experience to a depth-starved secondary for Miami.
Spring football kicks off on March 3rd, when UM will host its first practice of the season.
