It was the kind of speech that makes Miami Hurricanes holler while tossing up “U hands”, but makes the rest of the nation sick – because as the saying goes, “It’s a Canes thing … you wouldn’t understand”.
Former UM defensive tackle Warren Sapp was inducted to the NFL Hall Of Fame in Canton, Ohio on Saturday night and his speech (click here for 11:28 minutes of magic) most-definitely made backers of the orange and green proud. For those who missed it, Sapp’s closing words verbatim:
“… and now to my U brother. Michael Irvin … Money Mike forms the green and this Orange County boy forms the orange and we form the ‘U’ in the corner. That’s what we do … There’s five other University of Miami brethren in this Hall Of Fame … I want to say thank you and join you and I love what we have … the bond … it’s a Cane thing, you wouldn’t understand.”
The five others Sapp mentioned are center Jim Otto (1980), linebacker Ted Hendricks (1990), quarterback Jim Kelly (2002), defensive tackle Cortez Kennedy, as well as the in-attendance Irvin (2007).
allCanes created the “It’s A Canes Thing … You Wouldn’t Understand” Tee around the time Big 76 even stepped foot on campus in the early nineties and here we are a few decades later, shirt still going strong and another Miami great in Canton for a magical night.
Congrats to Warren and for head coach Al Golden, another wonderful recruiting chip as the brotherhood was on display tonight (re: look at the tears welling up in The Playmaker’s eyes when his Canes brother talked about “the bond” starting at the 10:06 mark).
Another proud moment for The U Family.
