A quick blog here as my brain is still trying to digest the actions of SEAL Team 6. Somehow it just had to find a way to come back to Charlie Sheen, though we’ll save all that talk for another time and place. Right now, I’m asking for your help.
On Tuesday I’ll have my first chance at a one-on-one with new University of Miami athletic director Shawn Eichorst. I have plenty of questions in mind, but I want to take the pulse of Hurricane Nation here. This is a great opportunity for you to weigh in, so please email me your question or leave them on Facebook or Twitter so I can pass along some topics you’d like covered.
Please keep in mind that we’re in need of some intelligent and well-thought out questions that will be answered. There’s a way to play this game and while we’d all love to know contract details of new basketball coach Jim Larranaga, UM’s admin is yet to comment on that and certainly aren’t going to start tomorrow.
Are there things about the fan experience that you’d like to see improved? What might be an issue that you don’t feel has yet been brought to the new AD’s attention? IN OTHER NEWS : It was a tough weekend at A-Rod Park. Miami Baseball had a chance to really make some waves, had they swept – or at least won the series – against Florida State. The Canes won the Sunday showdown, which was good enough to move them up four spots in the RPI to eleventh.
The good news; if Miami can sweep Hofstra and take at least two at Virginia, the Canes will climb into the top eight. The bad news; the Cavaliers might be the best team in the nation, so there won’t be anything easy about a road trip to Charlottesville.
There were way too many errors and base running mistakes this past weekend and Jim Morris told me that he didn’t sleep much on Saturday night. It was a spirited win on Sunday and a great job by EJ Encinosa, pitching six innings of scoreless ball in what 3 called a “must-win game”. There are no mid-week games due to exams this week, so we’ll see each other for next weekend’s showdown against Hofstra.
One last thought; the NFL Draft, which I don’t want to touch on too much as there’s already enough chatter about that.
I wasn’t personally surprised that Miami had eight kids drafted as the NFL looks for potential. In some cases it’s the same potential that Randy Shannon and staff saw when recruiting these guys and some NFL GMs saw the same.
In the NFL, GMs believe that their coaching staffs can get the most out of players – which is how Sam Shields blew up on defense at Green Bay – after spending three seasons playing offense for the Canes – and Jimmy Graham became New Orleans’ go-to tight end with only one year of college ball under his belt.
Like many, I’m surprised Richard Gordon was drafted, but since he was a guy that refused to talk to the press his entire career at Miami, I can’t say I really had a feeling for No. 84’s thoughts on anything. Either way, the Oakland Raiders saw something which told them he was third-round material, so we wish him luck.
All in all, the Draft showed that there is talent on this team and based on the attitude, work ethic and discipline Al Golden and staff will bring day in and day out, you have to believe that they’ll turn that potential into success.
