The Beast : Beating BC Twice

Sunday was a pretty good day to be a Miami Hurricane. The men’s and women’s basketball teams played a rare doubleheader on the road at Boston College in Chestnut Hill and the best part of the two-game fiesta was that both teams came out victorious, and by large margins.

The men’s squad needs every win it can get. They headed to the Bay State at 2-3 in the conference, and 11-7 overall. Lately it’s been Kenny Kadji leading the way for the ‘Canes, and the Florida transfer had 14 against the Eagles.

It was Durand Scott, though, that led the way for the orange and green. Scott tied a season-high with 19 points. Almost as important as the points was his four assists and no turnovers. I’ve been on Scott lately, because, at times, it seems as if he’s lost. I give him credit for his performance Sunday though. More D-Scott at that level will equal more wins for Miami.

It’s also nice to see that Malcolm Grant seems to be back on track after the loss of his older brother. Grant has scored 16 points in three of his last four games. He’s still working on getting his three-point stroke back (he went 2-of-8 Sunday) but we’ll take the points, however we can get them.

The Hurricanes at 12-7, 3-3, find themselves right in the middle of the pack in the ACC. The men’s team takes on Maryland, who’s also 3-3 in the ACC, on Wednesday night at the BUC. A win against Maryland will move Miami into the top six in the ACC standings which is where they want to be if they want to have a chance at making The Dance. Be at the BUC on Wed. night to cheer on your Canes!

After the men’s team beat BC, 76-54, the women’s team took the court at the Conte Forum having won seven in a row. BC’s women’s team is having a rough year. They haven’t won a conference game to date.

This one wasn’t a matter of if the ‘Canes would beat BC, but a matter of by how much. The answer: 31 points. Moe Moe (Shenise Johnson) and Bay Bay (Riquna Williams) had 22 and 18 points respectively while Stefanie Yderstrom chipped in with 15 points as the ‘Canes dominated the Lady Eagles.

Katie Meier and her team are now 19-3 and 8-1 in conference play. I know the Heat are good, and the Panthers are playing good hockey. I know the Marlins have put a pretty good team together, but if you are looking for the best sports story in town, there’s no discussion -it’s Miami’s women’s basketball team.

The girls back in action at The BUC on Super Bowl Sunday, but at 2 pm, against 5-14 Clemson. Get to the BUC and watch them before you start your Super Bowl party.

IN OTHER NEWS : I had a chance to get out to the first official baseball practice of the year on Friday. It was good to catch up with “3” (Jim Morris) and even though Miami is picked to finish third in the Coastal Division of the ACC (by the coaches in the league), I feel pretty confident about this team.

We also had a chance to talk to Peter O’Brien, the B-CC transfer. O’Brien is one of the best players in the country. When you add him and Eric Erickson to this team, I think you have enough leadership to get these guys back to Omaha.

From what I’m hearing, Gino DiMare being back in the fold has made a big difference. The season gets started just a few weeks from now and you know I’ll be at the park a bunch. Stay tuned for your baseball fix right here.

I’ll be at The U all day for National Signing Day, so look for the wrap up right here. Until then think happy thoughts about some of the big names that are still happy. May they fax their paper in to the Hecht on Wednesday morning!!
