Rules are rules; suspensions & depth chart info

Robert Marve isn’t the only player missing Thursday’s contest against Charleston Southern. Six more Canes were added to the list of pine-riders – Damien Berry, Kayne Farquharson, Eric Houston, Chris Ivory, Adewale Ojomo and Randy Phillips.

No official reasons were given, but offenses supposedly range from missed study hall or class, tardiness, improper cell phone use or any other rule Randy Shannon has implemented and players have broken.

I’ll again go on record saying I applaud this move. Mess with the bull, get the horns. Shannon laid out these rules when he took the gig almost two years ago. Screw around and he’ll hit you where it hurts; with playing time.

Regarding the Marve situation, anyone who really sees this as ‘new’ news, hasn’t been paying attention. All current Canes were made to sign a contract regarding off the field transgressions and the punishment that would be accrued for such behavior.

Marve had a run in with the law and even though charges were eventually dropped, it’s another to file under “nothing good happens after 2am” and a one-game suspension should’ve been expected, even though it hadn’t been made official.

Another thing to note, Ojomo and Ivory were the only freshman on this list. Marve is a r-freshman and Berry is a sophomore, while Farquharson, Houston and Phillips are all seniors.

Safe to say #82 and #6 better get it together quickly, or both can bank on little playing time as the season rolls on. Competition will be fierce regarding wide outs and in the secondary and neither wants to start this season in Shannon’s doghouse. Just ask Sam Shields, who missed almost half of the 2007 season due to grades and attitude issues.

As expected, ESPN opened today’s edition of College Football Live with info on the Miami suspensions and was refreshingly non-biased. ACC blogger Heather Dinich reported nothing new, but thankfully ESPN went to Canes expert Bruce Feldman for his take on the matter, after talking to Shannon and sources at The U:

“Word inside the UM program is Randy Shannon is adamant his players be accountable in all aspects of their lives. The second-year coach is determined that message, above all else, gets through.

Shannon understood how this news would play externally; ‘Canes suspend seven’ but a source at UM said Randy’s not so worried about ‘that stuff’. He’s more concerned with trying to build back the Canes program the right way — the way he wants it handled.

As for the timing of the Marve announcement, Shannon didn’t want a season-opening game suspension for Marve influencing the way his team approached fall camp or the way that his quarterbacks competed. Only time will tell if he got this decision right.”

Shannon is going to continue doing things the way he feels they need to be done. As someone who’s won at Miami as a player, grad assistant and defensive coordinator, he knows the formula for success and will get the right kids on board, believing. How anyone can question his thinking — at this point and in regarding this situation — is beyond me.

While ESPN loves the good business that comes with Cane-bashing, one analyst seems to have Miami’s back. Kirk Herbstreit usually has his thumb on The U’s pulse, calling for the resurrection around 2000 before others were on board. He’s also been dead wrong at times, penciling the 2006 Canes into the national championship game against Notre Dame, while Miami stumbled to a 7-6 season and Larry Coker’s firing.

This time around, Herbie sees something that has him calling for Miami to win the ACC Coastal in 2008 and facing Atlantic representative Clemson in this year’s conference title game in Tampa.

Miami has a rough go early on, with games at Florida and Texas A&M, but obviously neither are conference games. The Canes get North Carolina, Florida State, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech at home and have ACC road games at Duke, Virginia, Georgia Tech and NC State.

With the meat of the conference schedule coming to Dolphin Stadium, it helps Miami’s cause. As do some questions at Virginia, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Duke. Virginia Tech is still the team to beat – and if Miami picks up steam, they just might be beatable in a Thursday night home game (Nov. 13) making Herbie look like a genius… or a hell of a guesser.

The 2008 depth chart was released on Sunday night. It doesn’t include the seven suspended players for Thursday night’s contest, so it’ll have a little bit different of a look and feel for next Saturday’s contest at Florida. A few things to note:

Leonard Hankerson locked down a starting wide receiver role, giving him a chance to pick up where he left off, finally earning some playing time at the ned of last season. True freshman Aldarius Johnson is his back up.

– For all the preseason hype LaRon Byrd earned, he didn’t crack the two deep. Might have something to do with Harris starting in place of Marve and some familiarity between quarterback and receiver from their high school playing days.

Xavier Shannon walked on from FIU and earned the starting nod at center. The apple must not fall too far from the tree.

Dedrick Epps and Chris Zellner are splitting duty at tight end. Epps is the better pass catcher and Zellner, the better blocker. A battle to watch as the season rolls on.

– Par for the course, Khalil Jones had another strong spring and fall, but how will that translate into games? He earned the starting nod, but true freshman Travis Benjamin and perennial doghouse dweller Shields are on his heels. I’d bank on Shields getting the nod next week at UiF, as long as he keeps his grades up.

– Neither Eric Moncur or Allen Bailey are anywhere to be found on the defensive line, due to injury. Look for a depth chart shake up next week as both are needed for Gainesville.

– Veteran leadership bested the youth movement at linebacker. Seniors Darryl Sharpton and Glenn Cook are both healthy and will start alongside junior Colin McCarthy, though Jordan Futch and Sean Spence will see significant playing time. Super frosh didn’t crack this first depth chart, but should as the season progresses.

Chavez Grant and Bruce Johnson are your starting corners, with JoJo Nicolas and a finally healed Anthony Reddick back at safety. Brandon Harris is making a push at corner, though DeMarcus Van Dyke is said to not quite have some of the mechanics down regarding the new Bill Young defensive scheme.

Matt Bosher earned the starting role at both punter and kicker, holding off freshman Jake Wieclaw and back up quarterback Taylor Cook.

Graig Cooper will return punts, with Benjamin and Thearon Collier also seeing some action back there, while Ryan Hill can add kick returner (and back up safety) to his list of duties. B. Harris will join Hill, while Shawnbrey McNeal and true freshman Davon Johnson will also get their chance to shake and bake.

  1. Canes305,

I’m a faithful reader of this blog, and am familiar that you are a huge Randy Shannon fan and a huge supporter of the way he’s running the program. I also like the way Shannon is taking control of his players and figuratively telling them that he won’t stand for any BS. While I agree that a broken rule should not go unpunished, I really am skeptical about Shannon’s timing with the suspensions, namely Robert Marve’s. Taking nothing away from Charleston Southern, I feel as though this would have been a game where Marve could’ve really gotten his feet under him, and the offense would get used to the two quarterback system that Shannon is planning on using. I know that they’ve drilled in practice, but nothing compares to in-game experience. I think Robert could’ve hit the ground running in this game. Now, his first start will come against one of the top ranked teams in the nation in The Swamp of all places. I’m a little worried that this could really shake up Marve’s confidence for the entire season and even his entire tenure at The U. Starting him against the Gators reminds me of when we opened the season against Florida State when we (both teams, granted) weren’t at our best. I understand it’s only one game, and am not arguing that he should not be punished for his actions, but don’t you think Coach Shannon could’ve handled this differently?

    A few things…

First, there is one reason Marve isn’t playing in this game and it has nothing to do with Randy Shannon and everything to do with #9.

There are conflicting stories here. Some are saying that the punishment wasn’t handed down by Shannon and it was more of a UM policy regarding Marve not attending anger management classes for the offense.

Whether the school handed down the punishment or whether it came from Shannon, fact remains it was Marve who made the mistake.

I agree, the timing sucks and Marve needed the game experience. That said, it is what it is. Shannon runs a tight ship. Marve and every player on this squad knows that – so this isn’t exactly a shock that a run in with the law gets you a one-game suspension. Especially when guys are getting benched for grades, missing study hall and other infractions that would be non-factors at other schools.

Marve will go up against a buzzsaw in Gainesville in less than two weeks. How much of a difference a little game time against a Charleston Southern would’ve made… I don’t know. Not much, though. Marve will either succeed against the Gators, or he won’t. How much of that would really be decided in a glorified scrimmage against CS, who knows…

Marve will learn from this, I do know that much – and Shannon’s message is going to ring clear with these kids. He’s building for the future, so expect to take some lumps in the present.

  3. Let us not loose focus. You can not have a double standard of the old days. If you break a rule you will get punished if we’re not playing a good team. No, you break a rule you pay the price. This mentality will pay dividends down the road big time.

When you tell a kid to toe the line, he is not confused about the consequinces of not completing the task, but knows what will happen. This is what we need.

Timing means nothing in discipline. It’s do or die. If you want to play at the “U” you better handle your business!!!

  4. All this renewed "Thug U" B.S. that of course has started up again on the message boards has admittedly got me a little aggravated. Being a die-hard Canes fan and having heard all the rehashed crap about what they were in the 80's has gotten beyond old. We who actually have a clue about the program know that they have in fact ran one of the cleanest programs in college football for over a decade. I mean bringing up what happened back than is like attempting to make a Milli Vanilli reference relevant today. That time is gone, let it go. I mean the team went 5-7 last year, shouldn't that provide other teams fans enough ammo to attack them? At any rate I was curious so I did a search for "Football player arrested" on the good old wide-world web. I got bore after 10 pages of not finding a single article or reference to The U, not one. I did however find arrests ranging from the ridiculous underage drinking to assaults, armed robbery and even attempted felony murder (Go Bethune-Cookman!) Here are excerpts from just the first five pages. I'd wager you can find any of your friends team's in there somewhere and if not it's probably in the next few search pages. So do a search for yourself and tell me who should get the title of Thug-U. I'd say Alabama is in the running as well as FSU, West Virginia, Virginia, OU, Florida the list goes on and on before you'd come to Miami and even when I did find the first mention of Miami, it was Miami OH. And of course this is without going into Academic scandals (FSU), Player payouts (USC and OU) and all the other sketchy things going on across the NCAA. So here's a little ammo to shoot back at your friends when they give you that old, wore out, "Thug U" line. GO CANES!!!

Fresno State Football Player Arrested (DUI, crashed into a building)., Police arrested two Duke football players (Fight and resisting officers), A&M Suspends Arrested Football Players Indefinitely (Aggravated Robbery), UH Football Player Arrested (Two felonies, unauthorized entry into a car and assault), Four Duke football players and a rival North Carolina player were arrested (Various charges including assaulting a police officer), UT Football Player Arrested (..tampering with evidence in connection with the aggravated robbery case…going back to the crime scene and beating up one of the victims for telling on his teammates.) 5. Look i’m not tryin to look back on the good ‘ol days… but i do remember a certain kid by the name of Ken Dorsey who like Marve had just as much inexperience at QB and we threw him in the game against Washington we lost the game but didn’t lose any under his watch for almost two years!! So i’m not making any comparisons but if Marve is anything like what Dorsey was we’ll be in fine shape.

  6. About the suspensions, leave it to Mike Wilbon saying “Whats new in miami” about the seven players.

    Pisses me off.

And as for the CS game, since Marve is riding the pine does this mean that Cannon Smith and Harris will split the time? I’d think so.

  7. Look no further than the fight last season to see where UM has garnered such a reputation as thug-U.With a former player and radio personality expousing the virtues of the UM mentality over the air to a nationwide audience. The fight at LSU is just another example of the behavior that has put the program in this light.

  8. (Look no further than the fight last season to see where UM has garnered such a reputation as thug-U.With a former player and radio personality expousing the virtues of the UM mentality over the air to a nationwide audience. The fight at LSU is just another example of the behavior that has put the program in this light.)

You mean the fight, 2 seasons ago for the record, started by FIU when they threw a UM kicker on the ground and began kicking him in the head? The one they tried to start the whole game by playing dirty, pushing UM players and throwing outrageously late hits and the officiating crew did nothing? Because I was at that game and it didn’t happen the way the media showed it with edited and looped film? You cannot tell me that there is a team out there that is going to sit on the bench and watch a teammate getting kicked in the head. If there is I sure as hell wouldn’t want to be a fan of that team.

Than you have the stupidity to bring up the LSU “fight”? Where UM’s players confronted LSU because they were pushing around one of our water-boys?!? Than the oh so squeaky clean LSU player starts swinging his helmet hitting two UM players in their (un-helmeted) heads knocking one out? That “fight”? Where was the media calling for that LSU player to never play football again like they would have if it was a Miami player?

The fact is that because of the program’s past they are the convenient villain that the media just salivates at the opportunity to attack. FSU academic scandal…swept under the rug. USC and OU players getting paid by Alum…swept under the rug. Florida player using a dead girls credit card, real class act there I have to say and once again swept under the rug. ESPN sits like a vulture waiting for any Miami misstep and uniformed, ignorant homers such as yourself eat it up like candy.

Again I submit that our QB lost his temper and did a stupid “teenager” thing in punching a mirror. I’m not defending it, he should know better but we all forget that these are still just kids and they are going to make stupid mistakes from time to time. Now please tell me what squeaky clean, never in trouble with the law, fine upstanding program is it that you are so lucky to be a fan of? Please enlighten me to what University this is that has no players past or present that cause problems?

Try in the future to educate yourself to ALL the facts before making accusatory statements. For instance, by your standards Dartmouth and Holy Cross are both “Thug-U’s” they not only had a bench clearing brawl, but they had it the exact same day as the UM-FIU brawl. Of course really not many people know about it because it’s much more fun to attack UM than Holy Cross right ESPN? Or maybe you should go find some of the footage of the Clemson vs S. Carolina brawl circa 2004 which was way worse than anything UM did in the FIU brawl. Including players hitting police, fighting amongst their OWN team and kicking un-helmeted players in the head while they lay on the ground in the fetal position. Hell their own staff couldn’t control them after they got them back to the side line. Funny I never hear anyone bring those shining moments up when talking about other teams. So if you want to make the Canes your villain go right ahead. If you want to point at them because it’s easier than acknowledging all the shit going on at “your” fine university feel free. Just try getting your facts straight. Just remember that every time you point a finger there are three more pointing back at you. And finally remember that It’s all about the U!

  9. Get ’em WPBCane. You beat me to the punch. Couldn’t have said it better.

As for the micromanaging comment, I disagree.

This is college football, not corporate America. Are parents ‘micromanaging’ when disciplining their kids and looking out for their best interest?

At day’s end, you are talking about impressionable 18-21 year olds whose egos can get out of check and their popularity can bring about some poor decision making. Shannon and staff are as much teachers and parental figures as they are football coaches.

College football players need guidance. If you don’t believe it, look at Gainesville, Athens, Tallahassee, Columbus and other college towns where kids run amok and the coaches worry more about ball than character…

  10. I didn’t read thoroughly through the comments, but what’s the word on Arthur Brown? Any news? I read something a while back that he was struggling a bit due to not being coached very well in high school. He relied strictly on his speed.

  11. I didn’t read thoroughly through the comments, but what’s the word on Arthur Brown? Any news?

Brown is currently third on the depth chart behind senior Darryl Sharpton and true frosh Jordan Futch, who’s picked things up very quickly.

Brown will see the field and he’ll continue picking things up. All the high school accolades in the world aren’t going to vault him past a hard-working, finally uninjured senior and another freshman who is proving to be hard worker and special talent.

I wouldn’t put too much weight into this first depth chart as things will be vastly different entering Florida next week and with Randy, things change after a game or practice. Like JJ, he’ll go with the hot hand.

  12. Thanks. I can’t let you have all the fun! Honestly I just get aggravated with the rampant ignorance about these things. People just love to jump on a bandwagon without knowing anything about the subject and throw out “facts” that they heard “somewhere” from “someone”. Meanwhile they conveniently seem to have no knowledge of what goes on in their own programs….man I hate Homers. Keep fighting the good fight, Go Canes!

  13. It’s a cut and dry issue to me … black and white with no gray areas in between. I’ve read ‘Cane message boards and heard ‘Cane callers on the radio to only to see fans turn on Boss Man Shannon in less than a heartbeat for doing exactly what ‘Cane fans absolutely tear down coaches from other schools for not doing – holding their players accountable. I’ve read articles in papers trying to use comparisons that are complete apple to oranges in this instance.

Greg Cote saying “Say your teenaged daughter got in some trouble around 10 months ago. You did nothing at that time beyond admonishment in terms of discipline. Life went on. The matter seemed forgotten. Your daughter had been exemplary ever since. Then, a few days before her senior prom, you told her she was grounded and couldn’t go because of what had happened the year before. Is that fair?”

Apples to oranges, try and defend that comparison as much as you want but it’s not the same. Why? Unless the daughter signed a contract that stated if she got into any trouble, she’d have to miss the next prom when she was able to go – then no, it’s not the same. Boss Man clearly stated his rules – period. You screw up, you don’t play the next game .. and it doesn’t matter who the hell the ‘Canes are playing that next game – you’re not playing. It doesn’t matter if it’s a pivotal game in conference that could determine what bowl you’ll go to or winning the conference – you’re not playing. It doesn’t matter who the hell you are, whether it be a walk-on non scholarship place kick holder or the next messiah with the arm of Marino and the brains of Montana to resurrect Quarterback “U” – you’re not playing. What part of that doesn’t anyone get?

Seeing how Marve was a RSFrosh last year that didn’t play a single snap in a live game, seems to me it would be pretty hard to suspend him from playing in a game … when he couldn’t play in the first place. Yes?

Maybe Boss Man could be like all the other coaches that we call out in question for their judgement in terms of when to discipline a player. The ol’ Head Visor up in South Cack-alack has stated starting tailback Mike Davis and two or three other players will be suspended for a game for violating the athletic department’s class attendance policy, but they will not miss Thursday’s opener against N.C. State.

“It’s a middle-of-the-year game,” Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier said Saturday. “They’re all missing that same game.”

Ol’ Head Visor’s policy does not require players to be suspended the next scheduled competition – why? Because what if the next game is against Georgia or Rocky Top? You crazy? His boys can’t miss that game – for anything (ask Urban Myth about letting Jarvis Moss play in 2006 to preserve their season). Visor will choose a nonconference game against Wofford or UAB – which he will, no doubt whatsoever. Who wants to get down on laying $500 on it being Wofford?

What the hell kind of discipline is that? What are the kids going to learn from that? I’ll tell you what they learn – jacksh*t. You screw up? Don’t worry, we’ll rest you for a cupcake game so you can receive treatment, hang out and get ready for an in conference game. Way to teach them life lessons there Visor – and to think how many ‘Cane fans wanted him to be the head coach at The “U”? The freaking “World Wide Leader” already hates everything Miami (except Kirk Herbstreit … who placed Miami #5 on his Movin On Up list of schools, Miami on his ACC Coastal Champ prediction and Randy Shannon as his #5 coach who will exceed expectations) .. so having someone like the Ol’ Head Visor and his “rules” would’ve had them waking every morning from a wet dream of headlining the ‘Canes with anything negative they can find. Randy Shannon is building Miami back to where it should be, the right way. Butch Davis did it and we survived – and it took him longer than it is probably going to take Boss Man, seeing how he was coming off a probation mess.

Just like Coach Boone said in Remember the Titans “The world don’t give a damn about how sensitive these kids are, especially the young black kids. You ain’t doin’ these kids a favor by patronizing them. You crippling them; You crippling them for life.” Boss Man Shannon isn’t the way Ol’ Head Visor is and he sure the f*ck isn’t the way Urban Myth is (isn’t Ronnie AK-47 Wilson being given a THIRD CHANCE with the Crocs b/c of lack of depth due to injuries? 1% of 1% huh Myth?)… or any other coach that really has no interest in teaching life-lessons to prepare the kids for the real world – and I can’t stop applauding Shannon for that.

From the type of venom I’ve seen displayed for Shannon on message boards and sports talk radio for doing what he did … how about this – Yahoo has domain names for only $1.99. Put your money where your blubbering ignorant mouth and typing fingers are – go ahead. FireRandyShannon.com is out there waiting to be born, all it takes is one of you doomsday ‘Cane naysayers to give it life. Know what? I’ll even reach down deep into my pockets and PayPal you the $1.99 out of the goodness of my heart to get you started. And while you’re at it, look down inside you and ask yourself if you’re angry that Shannon has benched Marve for your own selfish reasons of wanting to FINALLY see Marve play after 12 games of QB ineptitude last year …. or not. Ask yourself if it’s for your own selfish reasons as a fan that you can chirp off to other fans of other schools when your team wins – even if it’s by all the wrong reasons. Ask yourself if it’s your own selfish reasons that you want Marve to play against Charleston Southern to prepare him for the Crocs …. or not.

Honestly, Marve will have to wait a week to be really hit by someone since High School – that’s probably about the most he’ll be missing by sitting out the first game. Yes, I agree to a point that game time experience and situations will be missed as well … but how well do you think Charleston Southern will prepare Marve for the Crocs? The ‘Canes aren’t playing Charleston Southern in The Swamp. I’m thinking the team speed on Charleston Southern’s defense will be non-comparable to the Crocs, the looks on defense will be non-comparable (the Crocs are implementing a 3-3-5 in defensive situations, maybe even more than just situations … could be a majority of the game), and Marve will see a hell of a lot better looks and speed from his own defensive unit in practices out on Greentree before Sept. 6th. Nothing really will prepare Marve or Jacory of what they’re going to cut their teeth on come Sept.6th in that cesspool arena of Dixie loving inbred Git R Dun’s.

Also, where’s the faith in Jacory Harris? It seems you see the truth coming out of a lot of ‘Cane fans in times like these …

“Oh ya, we have Jacory Harris – the leader of the #1 high school team in the nation that went undefeated for HOW LONG? We have Mr. Football from two years ago, Mr. Football from last year on our team, along with a fiery prep-school transfer that has a movie star name bred for his position and a 6’7 project QB that can also do some punting or fake-punts that involve throwing it. We are stacked. I love Jacory Harris. Wait, wait … what’s that? Robert Marve isn’t starting the first game? What? What are we going to do?” ***(But, we have Jacory Harris I thought …)***

“What the hell Shannon? I knew he wasn’t head coaching material, esp. after that 5-7 year last year. Now, he’s going to throw a freshman in there to play the week before the Gator game and leave the guy who is supposed to be starting on the bench because he did some stupid act that all teenagers do in the heat of the moment?” ***(Um, Marve is the one to blame for his actions – not Shannon. I don’t care if the charges were dropped, he vandalized property by breaking the mirror off a car that wasn’t his and he ran from the cops. I’m sure you’d be pretty pissed if that happened to your car by some teenager – this teenager just happen to be Marve, so it probably wouldn’t affect you as much. It might be safe to say it was probably a ‘Cane fan whose mirror was broken off, saw it was Marve who did it and waved it off – I dunno, but that isn’t out of the realm of possibilities. Neither QB has taken a collegiate snap yet and isn’t that why Boss Man Shannon has pushed for major playing time and reps in practices/scrimmages from the younger kids, for depth purposes and in case of injury? Didn’t last year teach anyone anything, esp. at the RB position? Hasn’t Jacory been in live fire just 8 months ago in the FHSAA Championship Game in which he helped them win, 41-0? As opposed to Marve who hasn’t played a snap of football against an opponent since 2006?)***

“NO, no, no. Shannon is wrong with this, not letting Marve play. He should’ve made him run extra laps in practice.” ***(Don’t they run extra laps anyway if they candy-ass around in practice? Doesn’t the self-appointed “kangaroo” court by players take care of situations they deem fit from actions of fellow players in class or in practice, in addition to a player breaking Shannon’s rules? Wouldn’t that make Shannon look like a complete hypocrite by not upholding his rules? Wouldn’t he lose absolute credibility with his players and go back to the Coker Country Club way? He clearly states a rule, has the kids sign a contract and then goes back on it by letting the supposed starting QB play in his first game after breaking the rules he clearly set?)***

“Look, if my dog pisses on the carpet, I don’t slap him on the nose with newspaper 10 months after he does it.” ***(Once again – apples to oranges, you can’t make that comparison so stop wasting your and my time with it. If you don’t like it, honestly, Boss Man and his entire coaching staff really aren’t going to lose sleep over it. It is what it is. Rules are rules. Period.)***

I’m a HUGE Marve guy – have followed him from his days at Plant here in Tampa and have seen more games of him in person than probably 95% of ‘Cane fans on the message boards/radio talk shows/anchors who don’t live in the 813 or 727. I know what he’s capable of and I know how well he’ll succeed. I, as well as all of you, have waited a little over a year to watch him in action. How hard is it to wait another 9 days for #9? Hell, at least we know Marve won’t get a game injury the first week that will hamper him going into Sept.6th. And what would everyone say if Marve went down after the first snap of the Charleston Southern game? Jacory would be playing, right?

Some people choose to see only one side to this story – and there are always two. The media and press can only report what they know by what all is allowed for them to know by Boss Man and his coaches. You hear writers/reporters/anchors/talk show hosts say that Marve’s family was confused and mad about this situation. Ok. I’m sure they were b/c they, as well as alot of us, were waiting to see Marve FINALLY play after two years. Everyone wants to see their kid play, from TBall or Pop Warner all the way up to the Pros. Once again, Shannon didn’t cause this to happen or get Marve in trouble … Marve got Marve in trouble. Shannon said all the right things and did all the right things. How did he know how Marve or Jacory would react if Shannon came out and announced it back before the Spring? I think Shannon knew that they’d still both compete their asses off in practice and scrimmages, but he didn’t want to take the slightest microscopic chance of possibility that Marve might not give it his all, knowing he wasn’t starting Aug. 28th. Or maybe the slightest microscopic chance of possibility Jacory would know he was the starter no matter what come Aug. 28th, so he wouldn’t compete everyday like he has since Day 1 when he stepped out onto Greentree. Shannon did what he did so there wasn’t that chance – he wanted them all to push each other everyday, knowing that he needed depth at that position and also letting them compete hard for that open starting spot.

I for one believe that Marve or Jacory wouldn’t slackass it at all in practices or scrimmages, if either one knew they were the starter …. I believe Shannon knew that as well, but he can’t take that chance and everyone should be backing him for doing that.

I have been a Randy Shannon believer and supporter since Day 1. He’s doing it the right way, the way everyone should want him to do it esp. if they send their son to play for him. There will be some things that happen along the way, like what has happened the past couple of days involving players being suspended and how it’s being handled. Everything is fine and the world is still turning in ‘Cane land. It takes time and patience to get back to where we want to be. I’m hoping it’s 1998 again … who’s with me.

Here’s a quick hitter from the movie Colors, and it has some similarities to how Randy Shannon is building Miami back …

    – There’s two bulls standing on top of a mountain. The younger one says to the older one: “Hey pop, let’s say we run down there and f*ck one of them cows”. The older one says: “No son. Lets walk down and f*ck ’em all”. –

    Patience people.

    S. Woodward brings it again.

A few things about Cote: (1) This is Marve’s first start since the incident, after being out all of 2007. This is the first chance to discipline him. (2)As Woodward said, a contract was signed. No one was ‘blindsided’. The issue may not have been discussed, but it also shouldn’t be a huge shock.

Amazing to me how Shannon can’t f’n win with the local media.

Don’t suspend a kid and the inmates are running the asylum. Sit a kid down when it’s deserved, and some idiots choose to bitch about the timing and way it was handled.

Marve needs to get over the logistics of how this played out, take the blame and punishment like a man and realize he’s starting his collegiate career in the biggest football game of his young life on September 6th.

Other than that, it’s pissing and moaning for the sake of pissing and moaning. Typical crybaby media looking to fabricate more drama.

If the family is furious, get over it as well. Their son made the mistake. Who really cares when the punishment was delivered? Marve is missing Charleston Southern, but has been GUARANTEED to start at Florida and beyond. Cry me a river…

If Marve isn’t tough enough to take this news like a man, then he’s not tough enough to start at the University of Miami and can go the way of Brian Fortay.
