The Miami Hurricanes are currently ranked No. 15 in both the AP and USA Today polls. Miami is coming off a 77-7 drubbing of Savannah State last weekend and at 3-0 is preparing to hit the road for the first time this season, taking on South Florida in Tampa this weekend.
Head coach Al Golden has released this week’s depth chart and the most exciting news, aside from a healthy, game-ready Stephen Morris (who suffered a bone bruise on Saturday night), is the emergence of freshman wide receiver Stacy Coley.
Coley saw his first action since the opener against Florida Atlantic. A non-factor against Florida due to inexperience, the newbie made his mark against the lesser Tigers. Coley hauled in a 25-yard touchdown pass from back-up quarterback Ryan Williams early in the second quarter, but a late game special teams play showed with the true freshman has under the hood.
After Savannah State scored its lone touchdown of the night, Coley answered with an 88-yard kickoff return. As a result Coley is no co-first string in the slot, neck-and-neck with Herb Waters, while in the same position with kickoff and put returns, where he’s listed as co-start with Phillip Dorsett.
Two other noticeable changes also came from back-ups making their mark against Savannah State. JUCO tight end transfer Beau Sandland has been move to co-second string, with Asante Cleveland and behind starter Clive Walford and at running back, freshman Gus Edwards is co-second string with Dallas Crawford and Eduardo Clements.
On defense, the most-notable change is freshman linebacker Alex Figueroa assuming co-first team outside linebacker with Thurston Armbrister. Tyriq McCord remains second string and will most-likely remain a third-down specialist.
