Nice call, critics…

Wow. Where are the haters now? Miami underachieves their way to 7-6, the first round run was “in question” and instead, it’s three picks in the first thirty-one of this year’s draft — extending this decade’s streak to 25 first round NFL Draft picks.

Goes to show you the kind of talent in/talent out you see consistently at The U. With the right coaching staff, sky’s the limit.

Congrats to Brandon Meriweather, Jon Beason and Greg Olsen. It’s a U thing… Let’s turn it around and right the ship, Coach Shannon.

Oh yeah, and for those keeping score, it was Miami (3), Florida (2) and Florida State (1) in regards to first rounders in 2007.

  1. We have our worst season in a quarter century, and still put 3 players through the first round. The Gayturds win the NC, and have less. Hoo-rah!

  2. You know what pissed me off? When Brandon was selected by New England, the second thing we hear come out of Chris Mortenson’s mouth is about the fight with FIU. THEN they roll the clip when Brandon is kicking one of the FIU players during the huge brawl. Damn, he just got drafted, why the hell is does that crap keep coming up? Especially right after he gets drafted? They went on to discuss the “gun” incident from last Summer and whether New England made the right pick.

  3. This is something I’ve wondered for years on end, I’ve talked to alumni and fans of the school and I’ve seen pictures of signs being hung in their stadium that say .. *ahem* … “Penn State = LINEBACKER U?” holy crap – you gotta be kidding me, what’s that about? That’s almost as ridiculous as saying that Penn State has legitimate average looking women. If you want to see the living/breathing example of anti-good looking, then take a walk around that campus. I guess they look OK by Penn State standards in females, but who are we kidding here? There’s not enough darkness a light switch turned in the “off” position can provide to help those hose beasts look even remotely attractive.

Let’s do a test right now .. name more than 1 starting LB in the NFL that is from self-proclaimed “Linebacker U” … ready … GO … time’s up. I’ll give you credit if you could pop off Brandon Short without closing your eyes and truly strain to come up with his name. Of course the other one from self-proclaimed “Linebacker U” is Arrington – the same assclown who was too idiotic to understand Marvin Lewis’s defensive scheme with the Redskins. You know, the same Marvin Lewis defensive scheme in Baltimore that put them in the category of one of the greatest defenses of all time, especially after the 2000 season where the Ravens allowed the fewest points in NFL history (165 in a 16 game span). The same Marvin Lewis’s defense where one of the baddest men on earth, Ray Lewis, was NFL Defensive Player of the Year. But no, if I’m from “Linebacker U”, I don’t need to listen to someone like Marvin Lewis, come onnn.

On a side note: If you remember Super Bowl XXXV, players from “The U” dominated the game that Marvin Lewis’s defense played right here in Tampa … Duane Starks intercepted a pass and returned it 49 yards for a TD (Kerry Collins was the QB, where’d he go again? – guess that’s why it’s self-proclaimed Linebacker U and not Quarterback U) … Ray Ray earned Super Bowl MVP (also was NFL Defensive Player of the Year) … Hell, even Jessie Armstead for the Giants intercepted a pass and ran it back 43 yards for a TD but it was called back on a penalty.

Back to my question though .. why exactly does a place that has the largest congregation of cattle and rednecks east of the Mississippi consider their school to be “Linebacker U”? Where’s the justification in that, especially when the true test is the showing of your product in the NFL? Terry Killens, Brian Gelzheiser, Phil Yeboah-Kodie, Rob Holmberg, Eric Ravotti, Reggie Givens, Rich McKenzie, Andre Powell, Keith Goganious … you want me to keep going? These are linebackers that were drafted from Penn State – where are they? … hell, more like WHO ARE THEY? Only one of them was drafted as high as the 3rd round, the others were from the 5th on down to the 8th (that’s right, I said 8th .. back in 1992). I’ll see your linebackers Happy Valley and raise you with: Jessie Armstead, Mike Barrow, Darrin Smith, Ray Lewis, Dan Morgan, John Vilma, DJ Williams. Give Darrell McClover, Leon Williams and Rocky McIntosh some time and I’m sure they’ll contribute a lot more than any of the Penn State product I named. This year was the first year since 2000 that a linebacker was taken from Happy Valley, and Posluszny wasn’t even a 1st rounder when almost every publication that I saw had him rated right below Patrick Willis and above The Beast – HUH?

I can’t remember how many times I saw the words “too small, might get pushed around” beside Jon Beason’s profile in draft publications and on draft websites. Patrick Willis is 6’2 240, Lawrence Timmons is 6’3 230, Posluszny is 6’2 238, David Harris is 6’2 239, Justin Durant is 6’2 230 …. Jon Beason is listed as 6’0 236 in most publications and websites – so you tell me how that’s small? You want small? Rohan Marley was small … 5’8 210 lbs (if walking on stilts and coming straight from the all you can eat buffet line) but he could still bring it like you wouldn’t believe and make you go to night-night slumber land when he hit you. How many teams dropped the “too small” card on Ray Ray? Ozzie Newsome saw past it – looks like that kinda worked out for them. Don’t get me wrong, I know Posluszny had a knee injury last year in the Orange Bowl that he came back from and “he plays with a lot of heart” – OK, THE BEAST DOESN’T? Hell, to quote Rod Tidwell in Jerry Maguire “I’m all heart motherf**er!” Who really showed any kind of heart or leadership on the ‘Canes this year? I heard some noise chattered here and there by some players, but I damn well saw some heart displayed by Beason more than others.

I will give Penn State some credit for producing Tamba Hali, that kid looks like he has some promise and he has an amazing personal story. I don’t think he’ll flame out like Courtney Brown. Also, I give them credit for producing Larry Johnson. I guess he makes up for the abysmal performances in the NFL of a few former burros from their stable such as: Mike Archie, Curtis Enis, Blair Thomas, Stephen Pitts, Steve Smith, Tim Manoa, DJ Dozier, Michael Robinson, etc. And he especially makes up for probably one of the most over rated running backs to ever come out of Happy Valley … “And with the #1 pick in this years 1995 NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select … out of Penn State … Vagina Carter.” Awesome. Vagina Carter – the Ryan Leaf of the running back world. His best performance while he was in the NFL came from the 3 lines he muttered in Jerry Maguire, and I quote: ” … inaudible … “. Dude sounded like a dog that had peanut butter stuck in it’s mouth. I even put the closed captioning on to try and see if those poor folks had a shot of what Vagina was mumbling – no luck.

I’ll let you in on a little secret Happy Valley – you’re no Linebacker U, Running Back U, Tight End U, Defensive Lineman U, Safety U, Receiver U … you’re nothing but spots being taken up on practice squads across the NFL … if you’re lucky.

  4. I just wanted Mr. Pata to know that I was thinking about him while I was watching his Cane brethren make it to the big time…Gone but not forgotten …#95

    big pimpin

  5. Woody,

You are not in enemy territory here in Tampa, my man. There are plenty of U fans in here in Gainesville South.

For those who claim Beason is too small, I got two words for ya,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  6. I’ll tell you one thing JMG, it’s good to actually hear from other ‘Canes that live here because just as you stated .. this is Gainesville South. The ‘Canes here are few and far between from what I’ve seen. It’s sickening to see what little coverage there is (if any at all) of The U by the local television stations and also the local papers. The sports sections here are a joke … they’ll be the first to make front line headings that Bobby Bowden farted in his office today or that Urban Myth put gel in his hair to make himself look pretty before going to get on his knees and fawn over a framed picture of Tim Tebow like a 5th grade girl staring at Tiger Beat Magazine. The U has how many National Championshps combined in football/baseball compared to every other school in the state of Florida combined and they get treated like some JUCO 1-800 Sally Struthers school. Tampa just started really covering their own hometown University of South Florida Bulls (I can tell you first hand that there were no more than 5 reporters after every football game in the press conference because I was in there – and 2 of them would be from the school paper) … they pretty much ignore University of Tampa, unless they’re winning yet another Div.II National Championship in baseball (4 titles), then maybe they’ll put it in a 3 line column under the tire store and japanese massage palor ads in the sports section. Good to see that there are other ‘Canes in the jungle out there.

By the way .. the two starting linebackers from self -procalimed “Linebacker U”, Short and Arrington … they’re not even on anyone’s roster right now
