Micanor Regis Suspended For Georgia Tech

Guys are going to get the message sooner or later; head coach Al Golden isn’t messing around. Despite depth issues on the defensive line, Golden has suspended senior defensive tackle Micanor Regis for Saturday’s showdown with Georgia Tech.

The suspension is technically for a ‘violation of team rules’ but Regis has been suspended for punching North Carolina receiver Dwight Jones in the groin during last week’s game. Replays showed Regis punching Jones while on the bottom of a pile and a separate replay showed the Miami tackle stepping on the hand of another player after another play.

“Micanor’s actions in the North Carolina game will not be tolerated,” Golden said in a statement. “We expect our players to represent our program with class on and off the field, and when they do not, there are consequences.

“Quite honestly, I’m embarrassed and I just apologized to Coach [Everett] Withers and shared that sentiment. We do not teach, nor will we ever condone this type of behavior in our football program.”

In a separate statement Regis said that he’s “hoping and praying” he’ll be forgiven for his on-the-field mistakes.

“I’m truly sorry for my foolish actions Saturday during the North Carolina game,” Regis said. “It was hurtful, wrong and embarrassing to both football programs, to both schools and to the millions of football fans that were watching. Specifically, I want to apologize to Dwight Jones, Coach Withers and the entire UNC football team.”

Regis has twenty-five tackles and one sack in six games this year. He’s UM’s most experienced, healthy defensive tackle and with the losses of Marcus Forston and Curtis Porter to season-ending injuries, delivered a true blow to teammates with this immature, in-the-heat-of-battle action.

The one-game suspension is a fair one and it should be noted that we’re talking about football here. Anyone who has ever played the game knows that all kinds of nasty goes on at the bottom of a pile. That doesn’t justify Regis’ actions, but it should earn him a pass from any holier-than-thou judgment for the behavior.

There’s a reason it’s a one-game suspension and not a game more. Regis screwed up in the moment and next time around he’ll think twice before reacting.

IN OTHER NEWS : Brandon Washington has been named starter for Saturday’s showdown with Georgia Tech. Washington beat out Seantrel Henderson for the starting job at left tackle days after Golden called out Washington’s play at North Carolina and declared the job open.

  1. Al could of suspended him for the first half and I would I’d been ok with it.

    Let’s go CANES!!!

  2. oh come on its kinda funny and seriously things happen on the bottom of piles constantly so really a whole game is a bit of an over kill. Golden has pretty much got my bad side this week after throwing washington under the bus and now this. Washington has played great every game and for a guy who is a former player should know that punches get thrown and eyes get poked and ankles get twisted in piles and gang tackles. Its apart of the game and he should be more considerate. I don’t condone throwing punches but i also don’t think that its the big deal its been made out to be.

Now moving on to the washington thing. You can’t be a players coach and back guys like buchanon and then throw your players under the bus like that. In all honesty i think that if henderson is ready to go then he should be at left tackle and that means you either move washington back to right tackle or back to right guard. I’m not as blown away by feliciano like everyone else is. He has flozel adams syndrome (constant false starts for those who aren’t cowboy fans) and those are drive killers and he does it game in and game out. So sit the young freshman and keep in the rotation for breather plays and series but he has three years left so moving washington there would not be a big deal. Right guard i think is washingtons best position and he is bigger than linder who also has a few years left to play.

Anyway car wreck coming in this week and they will be pissed off and i hope the defense has there coming out party this week. Coach D must attack this option this week or we could be in real trouble. NO NO NO NO NO NO laying back and seeing what happens like every other week. Attack this option with multiple run blitz packages and let the guys play press man on the outside. Yes they may get burned a couple times but if the d line gets through with spence and crew then it shouldn’t matter plus we are going against a pure passer this week. he is below average at best.
    GO CANES

  3. LOL @ the idea of “run blitzing” a triple option team.

Sure, fire those linebackers in at the dive guy. Let that us know how that works out for you when they all of a sudden are out of position to handle the QB and/or pitch man when they break contain.
