Miami Shows Second Half Maturity vs. GT

It was closer than the experts predicted, but in the end Miami proved up for the challenge in its opening weekend of Atlantic Coast Conference football.

Fueled by a late run, the Hurricanes pulled off the 45-30 win over Georgia Tech and advanced to 5-0 for the first time since 2004. A hard hitting defense, an early storyline this season, found a way to stifle the Yellow Jackets down the stretch, earning Miami its seventh straight win dating back to late 2012.

The Hurricanes, rarely tested early this season, overcame a ten-point first quarter deficit and proved worthy of their No. 14 ranking in this shootout over a feisty Coastal Division foe. Georgia Tech’s early 7-0 lead was the first time Miami trailed all season, though it wasn’t for long.

An early second-quarter forced fumble of Vad Lee set up a seven-play, 79-yard touchdown drive that put the Canes back in the game, reminding the Yellow Jackets this was going to be a sixty-minute slug-fest. …

  • The spread was 5 and a half, so no, it wasn't closer than the experts predicted. Even taking the final score out, the game was really only "close" in the 3rd qtr, after that it was ALL UM. Major props to this coaching staff for adjusting.

    • 47 - Since when is the final score the lone indicator of how close a game was? Miami was down 17-7 early, which most didn't see coming. Also, with so much chatter about where the Hurricanes' defense ranks statistically, giving up 401 total yards / 333 rushing yards and 30 is much more than most were predicting.

This was a 24-23 ball game with just over seven minutes left in the game. From there, back-to-back interceptions earned Miami fourteen points in a four-minute span, blowing the game out of the water.

Safe to say that after Virginia Tech held Georgia Tech to 10 points and 273 total yards, most weren't expecting Miami to yield as many yards / points as it did, to be in a double-digit hole early and in a one-point game more than midway through the fourth quarter ... but if you want to nitpick my sentiment that the overall game was closer than expected, so be it.
