Miami v. Notre Dame Rivalry : 101

The Rakontur guys uploaded some Miami / Notre Dame footage from ‘The U’ documentary to YouTube recently, just in time to get the juices flowing for this year’s Sun Bowl.

For those who haven’t seen it, some great clips from the 1988 showdown in South Bend – including the pre-game brawl and the phantom Cleveland Gary fumble, as well as the showdown in the Orange Bowl the following season where the Canes went on to smack up the No. 1 Irish, ending a win streak and propelling Miami towards a title of its own in 1989.

Enjoy the footage and get amped up for another Canes / Irish showdown nine days from now in El Paso. Doesn’t quite have the same luster as those late 80s match ups – but anytime Miami and Notre Dame go toe-to-toe, it’s all about beating the other guy, retaining bragging rights and shutting up an arrogant, entitled rival.

Also, bowl gear in stock – including “The Luck Stops Here” tee and the ‘Rivalry Renewed’ Sun Bowl tee.

  • they never mention the bomb threat to the locker room before the game and that the grass was grown extra thick to slow us down.

  • I was too young to remember or truly appreciate those classic Miami/Notre Dame games but I vividly remember my father going berserk during the 1988 game after the phantom fumble call on Cleveland Gary. The closest I can recall ever getting that upset about a Miami game was the 2003 BCS title game when Terry Porter threw the flag at the end. Needless to say, I was raised to despise anything Notre Dame. Go Canes!

  • The funny thing was the media was always been the ones who painted us as the thugs and them as the good guys -please. ND was a bunch of punks and dirty MFs. They had plenty of games where they showed no mercy to lesser teams and we turned the tables and put them in their place, they stopped playing us. F them. I'm still upset we wussed out and pretty much gave them a two-for-one series in the next few years. They don't deserve it. The ND brand has done NOTHING since the 80's. We're Miami. F everyone else.

  • So what's the latest in finding a qb for this class? I just read in the herald about some gary nova kid. Seemed to have good size and is supposed to be a heck of a passer. We need one with this class so he can redshirt and be morris's backup and a guy to push morris to be the best he can.
I'm still waiting to here about golden landing another decommit because its great that we got the former temple commit but u can tell he is just following golden and his staff from temple. We need south fla kids with this class

  • This is no longer a rivalry.

Of course, with ND being on the U's upcoming schedules, it could definately be renewed.

It can start with the upcoming bowl game.
