Miami outlasts Oklahoma at ‘The Shark’

There were some early questions down 10-0 and with two Jacory Harris interceptions already in the books, but Miami again proved it was no fluke on Saturday night. The only aberration thus far four games into the season was last week’s 31-7 faceplant at Virginia Tech; the same Hokies who struggled with Duke hours before the Hurricanes took down the No. 8 Oklahoma Sooners.

3-1 when many of the critics were calling for 0-4. How runny in that egg on your face this morning, haters? Same to be said for a strong portion of the UM fan base, pissing and moaning about Randy Shannon these past few years. Don’t look now, but that coach you didn’t believe in has your beloved program back in the top ten (at least as soon as the new polls are released.)

A full recap is forthcoming, but for now it’s time to celebrate. The sun is shining here in Miami, the beach is calling and right now it’s about soaking up the fact it’s a great day to be a Cane. Happy days are here again. More to come and a lot to say.

  1. I dont know whose expression is more priceless, the haters around the nation that felt this team could never get back on top, or the fair weather 'Canes fans who wanted nothing to do with Randy Shannon. Everyone who doubted Randy Shannon needs a quick kick in the ass out the door. If you dont bleed green, get the hell out the bus.

  2. Getting lucky on Oklahoma penalties and then hanging on by the skin of our teeth for a one point win is hardly being "back". Hopefully we don't let this go to our heads, FAMU has that speedy kick returner to worry about.

  3. AS A CANE FAN LIVING IN OHIO I WAS SURROUNDED BY BUCKEYE FANS IN MY FACE TALKING ABOUT HOW BAD WE LOOKED VS VA TECH & HOW WE WERE GOING DOWN TO OU NOW ITS SO QUIET UP HERE I BET EVEN QUIETER IN NORMAN & IN BRISTOL WHERE THOSE HATERS AT ESPN ARE FUNNY HOW THEY DIDNT HAVE MUCH TO SAY IN THE POST GAME OTHER THAN HERBSTREIT WHO ALONG WITH DESMOND HOWARD ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO SHOWS US LOVE ON THE REGULAR SAM SHEILDS WOW I HOPE HE BOUNCES BACK FROM HIS PERFORMANCE BECAUSE I WANTED TO JUMP INTO MY TV & CHOKE HIM BUT HE'S OUT THERE & IM NOT I LOVE SHANNON'S COOL & THAT TRANSFERS TO J12 & THE REST OF THE O & THE D DID A GREAT JOB BIG UPS TO THE LINE & I'M A RAY RAY ARMSTRONG BELIEVER BUT WE CANT KEEP MISSING TACKLES BUT OVERALL, WE'RE 3-1 HOPEFULLY WE'RE UP IN THE RANKINGS & TO ALL WHO THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO BE 0-4 BIG UPS TO ALL YOU HATERS!!!!!! ITS ALL ABOUT THE U ALL DAY EVERY DAY ROCKIN MY HESTER JERSEY #4 JUST TO RUB IT IN THEIR FACES PEACE

  4. What a great win! It feels good to be Back!!!!

Congrats to Randy Shannon! Don't get too down on those who doubted Randy. I admit I had doubts from time to time. He needed to prove himself as a Head Coach. Just like all new recruits to the U need to prove themselves. Especially after the travesty that was Larry Coker.

But Randy has proven himself now, and shown that he has what it takes to get the job done. And to that I say Congratulations! He deserves a great deal of credit for this 3 – 1 start and he has proven that he belongs at the helm of this ship.

An unbelievable game and an unbelievable season so far. Let's keep on trucking, taking one game at a time, and playing U football. If we do, I am confident that we will be sitting in the top 5 before long, with a shot at the remarkable.

It's great to be a Miami Hurricane!

  5. Well Said. Even being about 2100 miles removed from Miami, I had experienced some of the Shannon hate when ESPN was juxtaposing the training camps of new coaches programs a couple of years ago; a friend of mine was pissing and moaning about Saban and Croom and Rodriguez and Schiano's programs appearing better than Shannon's.
Turned out pretty well, with the added benefit that Miami didn't turn to a guy who was at risk to leave as soon as the program turned around, like Butch or Saban or Spurrier may have done. And how about Whipple's son transferring to Miami. There's some incentive to stick around for a couple of years for Mark.
I expected a 3-1 start, and anyone who observed Miami last year shouldn't be surprised by it. 7-8 less Freshman/Coker recruit mistakes and they would've been a 1-2 loss team last year.

  6. In reply to the guy attributing the win to Oklahoma penalties:: Oklahoma 7 for 79 yards, Miami 12 for 115 yards. Total yards: 341 Oklahoma. So Miami racked up an amount of penalty yardage equivalent to 1/3 or Oklahoma's total yardage. Yawn at your negativism.

  7. I said in the pre-season that if we made it out of the first 4 at least .500 I'd feel we were turning the corner…

    And I do…

But I think talk of being "back" is a bit premature…

We've barely beaten a not so good FSU team in total disarray and lacking any type of coaching leadership, a sketchy at best GT team again with very little defensive talent and ZERO passing game and squeaked by an Oklahoma team missing their true starting QB and his #1 receiving target with a true B-12 defense that; like the rest of that conference; can't play…

The most complete team we've played so far stomped our asses into the mud; literally…

Let's enjoy the great start but please stop pushing the "We're Back" thing as theses kids are getting enough pressure piled on them by the media as it is…

Focusing on getting to the ACC CG by winning one at a time is the best thing we could do to support these boys…

Not jumping on the already overflowing media hype wagon…

  8. Miami Alum 07, your obviously forgetting about the "lucky" penalty on Joseph in OU's favor which in no way was a roughing the kicker, led to their touchdown to make it 21-17. So you can say it was lucky, but regardless, it was a win over a #8 team that has been a perennial top ten team for the last 8 years or so. How about just being happy and enjoying the great accomplishment? We haven't had many in a while. Go Canes!

  9. Miami Alum~

You will never enjoy this team until it's too late. You're contribution as a fan is zero; you waste your God-given heart, & are willingly blind. If I hated this program as much as you & your ilk, I'd go root for UiF for the rest of the year. Eesh.

Way to go boys. Unbelievable heart by the D, who was just as injured (though not nearly as "aww shucks-ed" as Sammy B & Gresham. Thanks Mus for keeping your hatred right at eye level), had more doubt than ever & often had to stop OU multiple times due to incredulous penalties. You guys were resilient, passionate–& disciplined. Wonderful to see, better to be a part of.

Also, good game Sooners. The effects of injuries & a lack of leadership are something we've grown woefully accustomed to over the last several years. Keep your heads up, your program should have nothing but pride.

  10. we may not be back but we are ranked. I say we will get to 15 by the end of the year.

  11. Man I am so hyped about the Canes right now. To all trying to point out the negativity, TO HELL WITH THAT!! A win is a win dammit. This is what irks me about college football and the the myopathy of some of the fans; if you dont throw for 400+ yards, score 40+, and defense give up less than 100 yards/game then they say you are overrated. I'd take a 21-20 win and a 3-1 record for this team. If you arent excited about where we stand right now then you suck as a fan. If anything these wins show our toughness/grit as a team. People knock LSU for their close wins but its a W nonetheless, I would much rather win ugly than lose pretty. Harris threw INTs the first two offensive series in the game, came back and threw for three TDs, that right there shows you what caliber QB he is, how many other quarterbacks' confidence would have been shot to hell after that. Enjoy the win my fellow CANES fans, we control our destiny from here on out. Coming out of this grueling 4 game opening stretch with a 3-1 record will do wonders for our players confidence and honestly i feel like the only team who can stop the U is the U. IT'S A GREAT DAY TO BE A CANE!!!!

  12. To: Miami Alum 07
All I can say is that you are to the 'Canes what our blogmaster 305 is to the gayturds….someone who spent time there, but really doesn't give two shits !

Awesome game with loads of suspense. Standard issue Miami football ! Remove Shields, have not liked him in the receiver role and even worse in his new defensive role.

Chris, I hope you had a great time being there for this win. I would have loved to join you but acquiring my #26 signed football was my monetary choice !

Hated by many, loved by few, WE are the U

  13. What a great win! Cane fans should enjoy the ride. All this talk about whether we are back is really meaningless. What really matters is we are relevant again and a good team that will only get better. I'm happy for the team, coaches, and fans. Nice to be able to watch the games on t.v. That wasn't as easy last year for fans out of town. The worst part of the schedule is over. If we can maintain intensity for the remainder of the season a
bcs bowl invite is likely. What more could you ask? Go Canes!

  14. Justin:

Are you really that much of an egotistical moron that you honestly think I "hate" my Alma Mater?

I lived on campus all four years, served in the ROTC Detachment, was a Senator in Student Gov, a member of a fraternity, and was at every single home game for four straight years of blissful undergraduate education.

What irks me as how quickly some of you "homers" get down on your knees after one sloppy victory over a team that was missing its most influential offensive players. I have never been a Randy Shannon "basher", I'm just not going to get all giddy like a five year old school girl who just bought her first Jonas Brothers CD over him until we post at least an 8 win season and/or a Bowl Game victory.

Hell, even if we won the Toilet Bowl, I'd be singing from the high heavens. But look, Category 5 Storm up there is absolutely right. If BYU can beat Oklahoma, a BYU team that got man handled by an FSU team that in turn was whooped up on by a USF team that isn't much more than a community college scout team, I tend to not be as "enthusiastic" as some of you.

So until you've actually lived on, ate at, slept, and breathed the campus and the essence of the University of Miami and its amazing student-athletes (several of which were friens of mine), please keep your small opinions about me to yourself.

If you actually read my post, you'd note I wasn't "hating on" Miami, rather, I was simply keeping things in perspective. Yeesh… some people are more sensitive than a hormonal wife.

And, for the record, I believe the word you are looking for is "your" which dentoes possession, as opposed to "you're". My Miami education hard at work.

  15. The 40 and 50 point wins over good teams will come soon enough for these kids. They're just getting started. (Would like to see one of those big ones come in the Horseshoe at OSU next fall. Those guys deserve an EPIC, All-TIME BEATDOWN!)

We may not be all the way back yet….but another solid recruiting class or two and we will be. Keep the faith.

  16. bIG WIN!! i DONT UNDER STAND WHY THE ZEBRAS KEPT THROWING THE FLAGS TOWARDS THE IN OF THE GAME… OH WELL ..LET'S STAY FOCUS AND THANK YOU HATER'S

  17. That OU punter is a great Thespian. Hopefully our guys get healthy, but did you see Ray Ray trying to knock people out? That dude brings it like Taylor and Reed. Hopefully he hits the weight room and is ready next year for our National title run.

  18. This is for the people up here who have nothing but negative opinions of the coaching staff and the victory on Saturday. First of all, nobody gives a rat's ass who played and who didn't for another team, did you here anyone feel sorry for us after 4 starters on defense went down last year? If you ever played a sport in your life you would know that the excuses are left at the door!

  19. I think some of you don't really understand what being "back" means. That doesn't mean we will win the national title this year, it means that we are in the hunt! We are Relevant!!

For the people, who want to downgrade these wins, get a clue! We have played 4 teams who were in the top 25 before the season started, no other team in the nation can say the same thing!

hey mike alum, no one really cares that you were there for a few years, I have been a fan for 35 years and was born and raised there and through good and bad has never wavered from being a fan! Even when we had some of our worse years and i'm not talking about the coker years…

  20. Two years ago, this team couldn't hang within 5 scores of OU.

Saturday, they were good enough to overcome a slew of mistakes and still beat a Top 10 team.

I'm so tired of the "back" nonsense. When Miami was hoisting the crystal football in '01, i said to myself, "Enjoy this, because it'll never be this good, this easy, again." It's too difficult to keep that up forever, and sure enough…

I know this much: great teams win the games no one gives them a chance of winning, but they also take care of business against the cupcakes. This is a *very good* team. Let's see if them go from that level to great between now and December. It's more than doable.

  21. #11?
    THAT'S BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!
WHO THE FCUK PLAY'S FOUR STRAIGHT RANKED TEAMS????? 3-1!!!!!…COME ON!!!

WE SHOULD BE IN THE TOP 5!!!

  22. Top 5??? Who you kiddin? a 20-21 "win" over OU with a backup QB and a "faceplant" against VT! You guys are lucky to get the 11 spot this week! Dream on "swags"!!!

  23. Eh, Why not put it in terms we understand, with respect to degree of Back-ness. 2001 and 2002 Teams were Category 5 Hurricanes. The Current one just turned Category 4 and is intensifying. That should solve the "back" debate entirely.

  24. You know we're back on the scene when other fans feel the need to comment. 3-1 in the toughest openeing four games by any team this year. Period. Payback is a mutha. You don't have to go to the school to be a true fan either. It's actually easier to be a fan when you live there. It's called following the crowd. I live in Columbus, in Suckeye Land, so I put up with a lot of sht weekly. My support has always been there, through the highs and low. It's what being a true fan is. Check out the historical blog comments from the sub .500 days and you'll see me then too. Go Canes!

  25. Alum~

A fair critique on my grammar. I shouldn't have assumed I knew you. Or that your words are indicative of your opinion.

If what we've (we have) done through four games isn't on par with a "Toilet Bowl" victory, then perhaps you should stay on campus a bit longer. To those of us who watch college football & can get over a loss, this start is the closest thing to a playoff run college football will see. "Slobbery"? Yea, I'm happy. Perhaps the ROTC ruined your innate emotional discernment (I doubt it, as all the men I know from the Corps are exceptional). I think we should be #10 at the most. #11-13 would've been fine. I'm excited ABOUT THE TEAM, AM. That's what I watch. NOT THEIR RANKING. Also, OU < BYU < FSU < USF is great logic. The first week of the season is always the same as the end. That's why I give my bookie the preseason polls & tell him to base every single match-up off that infallible ledger.

We've both been through the last eight years; each & every masquerade under Coker, the blistering of avowed anti-Shannons — eight years just like every one of the "slobbery" clones, taking each game as yet another schism between us & greatness. So my point was that if you can't see the difference between this group (still in dearth of upperclassmen) you "don't hate" but are certainly not impressed with & the last several, you have traded your eyes for something ostensible & bold that hangs in a frat house.

Obviously I singed a nerve. I won't bother weighting down 305's page. I won't attack your UM education. I'll let you anoint yourself as resplendent with knowledge. You're exceptionally pleased with your accomplishments, which I'll have assume mean a lot to someone on this board.

  26. Well said Steve, well said.

And for Swift, no one really cares that you are older than dirt. Go watch Price is Right, leave the sports analysis to those who know what they're talking about.

  27. COME ON, GUYS. IT'S JUST 4 GAMES, can we just sit and watch how the whole season comes out? This hype was part of reason for the loss at VT 2 weeks ago. Remember we had 5 straight wins (including VT) before losing 3 last year? A 3-1 start beats most predictions, and we sure deserves to enjoy it. BUT more importantly, we need focus and win the next game, and games after next …

IT IS WAY TOO EARLY TO MAKE A CALL on the SEASON …

A win is a win, but a true canes' fan would never get TOO excited by winning a game (championship game excluded). Because the bottom of their heart reads "the U is better than you, in every game, in every play".

Agree with the point that Miami needs to focus and take a game at a time, but disagree with the comparison to last year.

The Canes got through that stretch you speak of by the skin of their teeth. Needing some late plays to hang on against Wake Forest… needed a miracle comeback against Virginia… needed a few lucky bounces to eke one out past Virginia Tech. All three wins came on the heels of scrapping one out at Duke.

Miami is now 3-1 with wins over Florida State, Georgia Tech and Oklahoma. A much different scenario than the example you give regarding 2008.

There's reason to be excited right now as the schedule absolutely lightens as the season progresses.

Furthermore, fans are allowed to 'geek out' over the team. Players and coaches need to keep their focus – not the folks in the stands.

  29. Getting lucky on Oklahoma penalties and then hanging on by the skin of our teeth for a one point win is hardly being "back". Hopefully we don't let this go to our heads, FAMU has that speedy kick returner to worry about.

Honestly, are you high? Oklahoma was being that game on a silver platter by Big XII refs. How did Miami get "lucky" on OU penalties? Because the Sooners lost their composure late and made mistakes on the heels of Miami remaining resilient?

Only a Miami fan would complain that a one-point win over the Sooners isn't good enough. Classic.

The Canes are 3-1 after a brutal three-game stretch. Why not leave it to the coaches to make sure the players heads don't get too big – as that's their job… and on the FAMU tip, it'll take more than LeRoy Vann to take down Miami. How are the Rattlers going to deal with the Canes offense and defense?

C'mon now. Enjoy the freakin win and take a shot at being happy considering this team is 3-1. I get so sick of this "nothing is good enough" bulls**t from this fan base. After 19-19 the past few years, UM fans have every right to be ecstatic with 3-1.

  30. DiamondBackRattler here…..Congrats on your win against the Sooners. I am a big fan of the Hurricanes and have followed Jacory Harris since he was at Miami Northwestern and coached by former Rattler Billy Rolle. However, I am an even bigger Rattler fan. I am a Rattler Fang Booster.

I am not going to say anything to get the Hurricanes fired up. In fact, I want them to take the Rattlers lightly.lol

Orlando Franklin and my nephew were high school teammates and he lived with my nephew during his senior year at Atlantic High School.

LeRoy Vann is an exciting player. However, Curtis Pulley will play on Sundays in the NFL as a QB or an athlete. Both want it to be known that they can compete against any competition.

It has been 30 years since the Rattlers defeated the Hurricanes. The Rattlers have to play well to maintain their ranking or move up in the FCS Polls.

  31. Wow… I'm honestly stunned at how you've completely taken what I've said out of context. Am I high? Really, thats the first thing that has come to your mind, the moderator and author of this site?

I had hoped you would be a little more tolerant, especially of a paying customer. In any case, I'll reiterate my point for you, since you've completely misread things.

We won by one point. At no point in my post does it say the win "isn't good enough". As others have said here, it is still far too soon to say "we are back", which has been the key issue that is being discussed on this message board. Most notably Category 5 storm who said, and I quote: "But I think talk of being "back" is a bit premature…

Let's enjoy the great start but please stop pushing the "We're Back" thing as theses kids are getting enough pressure piled on them by the media as it is…".

Yet, you single me out as "being high" because I said the same thing, albeit with a bit less tact? A touch of hypocrisy there, wouldn't you say?

A win is a win, and I acknowledge that, and I further acknowledge that I'm pleased to go 3-1 on the toughest schedule in college football. But don't patronize me by calling me out as some sort of heretic simply for voicing the opinion that there is still a season to play, and a bowl game to qualify for (and win) before we as a fanbase can even begin to say "we are back", which again, was the point of the discussion.

  32. Alum, how did I take anything out of context? You said Miami got "lucky" on OU penalties – again, taking something away from the win.

Living three time zones away, this was the first game I've been to in a while… and I was SHOCKED by the behavior of this fan base. The entire row behind me did NOTHING but complain about every play.

Every call was the wrong call. The players suck. Randy Shannon sucks. The program sucks. Armchair Quarterbacks with all the answers, literally MISERABLE for four straight quarters.

I simply don't get the animosity some fans have towards this head coach – nor do I get why some people even bother watching this team if they take ZERO enjoyment from doing so.

As a fan base we've had little reason to be excited for the past four years — literally, since the 27-7 win at Blacksburg in '05. The program is finally 3-1 and people are still complaining. I don't get that.

I agree with you that Miami isn't fully "back" and will comment in my recap later. Until this team has more Ray Ray Armstrong types (re: incredible freshmen) versus a Sam Shields (re: an out of place senior), Miami is still 1-2 years away from being a machine.

If I took your comments out of context, my apologies. I'm just tired of some fans sucking the wind out of everyone else's sails. The Canes are 3-1 after a brutal stretch and some folks are still complaining. I think that in itself is disgusting.

I allow all commentary in this blog and welcome freedom of speech. I don't censor anyone and feel I should be able to speak my mind, too. For me to have to toe the line because someone is a customer – that's not fair. Posting on this blog has nothing to do with anyone's patronage.

allCanes has been around fifty years and has always taken care of its customers. That said, if someone wants to come to this blog to debate football, let's not mix apples and oranges. Your patronage is appreciated, but I shouldn't have to censor myself or curb an opinion based on where one shops, should I?

As far as my pushing Miami being "back", I disagree that I've done that. I've said from day one that this is a 4-5 year rebuilding project. This is year three.

The Canes are on the right track and the survived the most brutal part of the schedule. 3-1 with FAMU and UCF on deck. It's time to exhale and appreciate where this program is early October.

Simply put, let's save the arguing for when the team loses again….

  33. BZCanes here-

We do need to be happy as fans with our start. Not only have we survived that schedule—but the quality of play is a complete 180 from last year.

We have a QB with the potential to be among the all time Miami QBs.
He has a long way to go–but is clearly showing signs that he's going to be a good one.

Our young playmakers are stepping up. We have the deepest and most talented WR corp in the conference (and 1 of the best in the country), and our running backs are complementing each other well.

That–and we're seeing the young guys on defense step up in big spots.
Ray Ray had ups and downs on Saturday, but showed why he was so highly touted.
We still have Brandon McGee who will get some valuable playing experience over the couple of games and will push Sheilds to step up or move over.

We've survivied not only the schedule, but a rash of injuries ourselves.

The bottom line is that the program is headed in the right direction–and whether we are officially back or not is irrelevant.

I think most knowledgeable fans would agree that we're very close–and next year has been the year we've been pointing to for a while.

While that is still true–we've started out 09 and put ourselves in a position to have a special season this year!

That's all I can ask as a fan…that the guys play hard–don't screw up off the field–and give us a chance as a team to be relevant nationally.

I don't want to get too high either–but I think we have a ton of reason to be extremely optimistic about the rest of this season—and I KNOW that we can take pride in how we've played thus far this year.

We have all the makings of a great season. We also have a very bright future beyond 09.

Lets enjoy and be excited about the fruits of Randy's labor.
It's been a while since we've been in this situation.

    Hell–answer this question.
What is not to be excited about?
    Loyal coach–great young players–etc.

The only reason for any doubts is based on what we did last year.

Last year is last year—and I guarantee we wouldn't be staring 3-1 and 11th in the country in the face.

  34. bet you guys think gene chizik is a good head coach too.. lawlz.

anywho.. great start to the season, sucks how we got worked by VT but we have to move on from that. now it's time to beat the teams we're SUPPOSED to beat.. the FAMUs DUKEs NCSTATEs WFs etc.etc. types..

  35. I'M WITH YOU ALLCANES FORGET ALL THE SUCKAS OUT THERE WHO CLAIM TO BE CANES FANS BUT BITCH AND MOAN ABOUT A ONE-POINT WIN I REPEAT WIN WE SHOULD BE COMPLAINING ABOUT WHY WERE NOT IN THE TOP 10 LET ALONE TOP 5 AFTER OUR STRETCH THAT NOBODY THOUGHT WE'D GET THROUGH AS FAR AS WHO WE BEAT SO FAR WHO KNEW FSU WOULD BE AN UP & DOWN TEAM THIS YEAR? WHO FIGURED G TECH WOULD BE EVEN MORE OVERRATED AS WE FIRST BELIEVED? & AFTER THE ALL THE TALK ABOUT OU BEATING US NO MATTER WHO WAS BEHIND CENTER & WITH THEIR "ALL WORLD" D WE COME OUT ON TOP.COME ON THERE'S A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BEING REALISTIC & SOUNDING LIKE A HATER. JUST ENJOY THE FACT THAT WE'RE STILL IN THE BCS HUNT & WE'VE GOTTEN PAST THE TOUGHEST START IN ACC HISTORY (LOOK IT UP)& STOP THIS SELF HATE TOWARDS THE U WE AS TRUE FANS DON'T NEED OR WANT THAT KIND OF NOISE IN OUR RANKS IF YOU WANT TO SOUND LIKE THE SKY IS FALLING AT 3-1 KEEP IT TO YOURSELVES & LET TO REAL DIEHARDS LIVE IT UP FOR A WHILE. PEACE

    YUNGCANE21

  36. Well said all canes! I believe we can win 7 of our last 8 games and go to a very nice bowl game! Head into 2010 a legit top 5 team and make a run the NC…

My Preseason Pick 9-3 now 10-2 looks VERY realistic!

    IN RAND WE TRUST!!!

  37. miamialum07, you are a moron. lucky officiatiang? miami had to play the officials and OU this game, just like we've had to for years(ie. joe joseph ran into the punter, not a personal foul. watch the replay). the u against the world. skin of our teeth? we put together a 4 minute offense that had the potential to score at least a FG if not a TD….or did you forget the last 4 minutes of the game. get a life and pretend you're not alum. as alumni 04 i think you are an embarassment. learn football before you share your idiocy on a football blog.

  38. LOL!

Damn. Thats a bad ass chick right there. Gotta love the women that bleed orange and green.
