Kiffin still out there & supposedly interested…

This is SO going to be one of those posts that gets Southern Cal faithful’s collective panties in a bunch.

My main man The Fall Guy and I have traded emails today and he rementioned to me the name Lane Kiffin.

I tried to pry and get a little more out of him, but all he’d give me is this; amongst the coaching community, Kiffin has let it be known he’s interested in the Miami vacancy and T.F.G. tells me that Randy Shannon knows this.

I don’t know if that’s good, bad or indifferent but this is the second “high profile” name which Shannon supposedly knows is interested in the OC position. The other was Walt Harris, who we’ve heard literally nothing about other than him throwing his hat in the ring and Shannon knowing this.

If there truly is some truth to these rumors, why were the likes of Kevin Sumlin and John McNulty higher in Shannon’s pecking order than Kiffin or Harris? Who knows?

Regarding Kiffin, a few things come to mind. There are rumors of Steve Sarkasian to Oakland. If so, would Kiffin take over all offensive playcalling or do the Trojans look elsewhere? Full control offensively of USC or full control of Miami? You have to think Kiffin would stay put as he’s been part of So Cal’s successful run since arriving in 2001.

There are also rumors of Yahoo continuing to dig regarding the allegations against Reggie Bush a few years back. Could something be brewing there or is it much ado about nothing? We’ll see. If things were really that hairy, you have to think Pete Carroll would get out while the getting was good.

I have no idea which direction our new head coach is going here, but it sounds like me that whichever direction Shannon goes, both Kiffin and Harris deserve an interview and chance to sell themselves. Unless I am totally missing something, both are worthy and qualified.

  1. Not sure how I feel about Kiffin.

His father has done great things here with our Bucs “D”, but young Lane has only 1 year as, what you pointed out as not even calling all the plays as “SC”, so I do not have a good feel on how ready he may or may not be for this gig. But first blush tells me that he likely is not.

My concern lies with the affects that this prolonged vacancy may have on recruiting. Robert Marve visits Coral Gables this weekend,,,, and who is going to sell him on an offensive philosophy that does not exist?? My feeling is that, whatever shot we had at him, we lose because of it. Too bad.

As others on this board have stated repeatedly,, you have to WANT to come and be a part of this program. If that WANT is not in you, then move along.

Hopefully, this gets resolved sooner rather than later, but I am no longer holding my breath. Ashame though, that this will cost us recruits.

  2. Anybody who would leave Southern Cal to go to Miami deserves to be put in a psyciatric ward for serious examination. Kiffin is a tool and a loser if he does it.

  3. TOS Message Boards are lighting up with the name of John Bond from Northern Illinois. I don’t know much about him but actually enjoyed watching NIU’s offense this year since they always ended up on ESPN 2 during the middle of the week or at Noon on Saturday. He would probably be a decent hire.

  4. kiffin is just throwing his name out there to get a raise, just like the other guys. shannon cant find anyone bc nobody wants to come here with the little talent on offense and the pressure for the chump change they want to pay. dont be fooled by what p dee has said to the media, they arent paying anyone half a mill. ask hank goldberg, he broke that story of shannon being lied to last week.

  5. I know none of this is fact but Kiffin could b a big help at THE U and he would get total control at THE U. PLus he wouldnt b that far away from visiting his parents down n Tampa. If Coach Shannon could read this…GET KIFFIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Why is it no one wants the UM OC Job? Has Miami lost all its glitz and glamour, has the U finally lost it’s swagger and appeal? I hope not but four offensive coordinators rejected offers or pulled themselves out of contention, Northern Illinois offensive coordinator John Bond has been in discussions with Randy Shannon, according to an official close to the situation. Also I have heard Patrick Nix is on a plane to Miami to interview today. Just giving you guys an update along w/ my 2 cents.

  7. I just read on ESPN.Com that Patrick Nix from Ga. Tech is going to be our new O Coordinator. Anyone else read that?

  8. You know what makes this whole situation worse??? Bobby Bowden has put together a super staff up at FSU, meanwhile we are sitting on our thumbs waiting for Dirk Koetter to fall out of heaven into our laps. All the “Great” coordinators are already taken and now we have a bunch of b-list guys to choose from. Why don’t we just hire Gary Coleman or Carrot top to be our OC!!!!! Excuse me for whining but this is pissing me off!!!

  9. According to ESPN, Nix from Georgia Tech has the new OC job. Anybody have any background on this guy? Style of offense???

  10. I’m glad we have another piece in place. I haven’t heard much talk about DC unless I missed something, so hopefully we can move forward now with wrapping up the staff and a solid 2007 class. I don’t know much about Nix, so I will give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he can’t be any worse than what we’ve had. I have a good feeling about this and look for us to gel.
