I don’t care if "it’s only baseball" – a wins a win over UiF

Miami 8, Florida 4 in last night’s series opener at Mark Light Stadium. In a battle of the undefeateds, the Canes prevailed. Eric Erickson struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings while Blake Tekotte and Jason Hagerty racked up six hits in front of a sold out Coral Gables crowd.

Saturday’s action kicks off 7pm ET with Miami’s Enrique Garcia going against Florida’s Patrick Keating. The Canes look to take the series tonight and get another shot Sunday afternoon if the fall this eve.

Funny how my idiot Gator buddies always downplay baseball, as if it’s meaningless. I’m sure it has nothing to do with Miami’s four National Championships to Florida’s zero. UiF is first and foremost a football school and conveniently started caring about ‘other’ sports like basketball when they started winning. With no baseball tradition to speak of, Gator fans love turning a blind eye towards anything that happens on the diamond. Typical.

A win is a win against the hated Gators. I don’t give a damn if it’s baseball, football or Connect Four. Give UiF a “L” in the loss column and I’m thrilled.

Side note, a little bit o’ history for you… last night’s win against Florida was Miami’s 1,200th win at Mark Light Stadium.

  • When was the last time the gators made it to or won the SEC baseball title? I think its been a while.

I remember when Miami hosted the super regional in like 03 against UF. That was a good series

  • Whoever wrote the article is truly an idiot. "UiF is first and foremost a football school and conveniently started caring about 'other' sports like basketball when they started winning. With no baseball tradition to speak of, Gator fans love turning a blind eye towards anything that happens on the diamond. Typical." Your so called idiot Gator buddies are not the typical Gator fans. How would you know how the rest of Gator nation feels about the other sports. What happened in Miami's last football game EVER in the Orange Bowl . . . oh yeah, they were DESTROYED, weren't they? Funny, isn't it? So I guess that means you and your fairweather Miami fans don't care about football, since you played so horribly this year. Why don't you check out attendance statistics for the same sports UF and Miami share. I guarantee you the only one Miami outdraws is baseball. Have you ever been to a UF baseball game? Funny how we manage to sell out many of the games, despite what your idiotic, limited opinion is. It is a shame that some one with the web writing capability such as you does not do any research other than relying on the opinion on a few Gator fans you are buddies with. No wonder you don't write for a website or newspaper that pays you to write meaningful, fact-based articles.

How is your women's soccer, volleyball, or gymnastics? How about basketball? Track and Field, swimming? Oh, wait, i bet you don't care, because those teams do not produce the way UF does. If you had merely written that UM did a fine job of beating UF in baseball last night, your website and writing would be a lot more dignified and certainly more respected.

  • My buddy Jerry Palm with College RPI.com whose ten year record of predicting the NCAA field is second to NOBODY thinks the Canes are in with a win in either of the final regular season games. Problem is we've lost 13 straight to BC, and four straight to FSU so both teams have our number even when we are playing well. If we lose both we have to win at least one, maybe two ACC Tourney games to get in. C'mon boys, play big Wednesday night and we don't have to sweat out the next week and selection sunday!

  • Whoever wrote the article is truly an idiot.

    Thanks.

Your so called idiot Gator buddies are not the typical Gator fans.

    And you know this how...

How would you know how the rest of Gator nation feels about the other sports.

Maybe because I lived in Gainesville for two years, covered sports for the Alligator for a semester and earned my degree from UiF? How's that work for you, Mouth of the South?

What happened in Miami's last football game EVER in the Orange Bowl . . . oh yeah, they were DESTROYED, weren't they? Funny, isn't it? So I guess that means you and your fairweather Miami fans don't care about football, since you played so horribly this year.

You couldn't make less sense if you tried. (1) What does Miami's OB finale have to do with this arguement? (2) Yeah, Miami was destroyed as the team bottomed out 2006-2007. Your point is?

Coker killed the program and Shannon is rebuilding it. He's put a concrete wall around the TriCity area and recruited the pants off of Urban Myth this year after a 5-7 season. Y'all know good and hell well you're scared because you expected Miami to be down A LOT longer and the rising has already begun. I love it.

Why don't you check out attendance statistics for the same sports UF and Miami share.

Oh it wouldn't be an argument with a Gayturd if you didn't pull the attendance card. Cute.

News flash - you have upwards of 50,000 undergrads in your one-horse town. Miami has close to 15,000. Do the math. Florida has 3x the student body for an on campus stadium. You're SUPPOSED to get 80K in your stadium in a town with nothing else going on.

The Canes are the equivalent of a pro sports team in pro sports town and metropolitan city. Getting between 30K and 70K to the OB on game day with 15,000 undergrads? I think Miami is doing just fine attendance-wise, amigo.

Miami is a bandwagon town. No one debates that - but you fail to acknowledge the size of this private school and smaller student body. The casual fan who has nothing to do with the program might not show up on game day when we're down - but that student section is always packed and rocking. Those kids have heart. Not only do the represent - but the stadium is off campus and they STILL find a way to get there and make noise.

I guarantee you the only one Miami outdraws is baseball. Have you ever been to a UF baseball game? Funny how we manage to sell out many of the games, despite what your idiotic, limited opinion is.

Have I been to a game? Yeah, everytime the Canes played up there in the late 90s. Thanks.

Selling out your baseball games on a Saturday in Gainesville is no feat. What else are you going to do? Head to Paines Prarie? Drive over to the Cafe Risque off Exit 73? Hang out at rest stops? Look for reptiles on Lake Alice?

Florida is a football town first and foremost. Y'all started giving a crap about basketball AFTER you won a title. Baseball is third fiddle and it's a sports Florida fans conveniently like to ignore as it's 4-0 regarding UM's baseball titles to UiF's.

It is a shame that some one with the web writing capability such as you does not do any research other than relying on the opinion on a few Gator fans you are buddies with. No wonder you don't write for a website or newspaper that pays you to write meaningful, fact-based articles.

It's 2008. Who the hell wants to write for a newspaper anymore? No thanks. I do this on the side and for fun. Trying to preach the Hurricane gospel and trash talk our rivals. It's no Gainesville Sun, I'm sure... but you found my site, read my crap and took the time to respond - so I'm doing somethign right.

I don't have to 'research' my opinions. I spent enough time in Gainesville to know baseball plays background. Football is far and away tops. Basketball became big after a few titles. No Gator wants to debate baseball as you lack the tradition the Canes have. End of story.

How is your women's soccer, volleyball, or gymnastics? How about basketball? Track and Field, swimming? Oh, wait, i bet you don't care, because those teams do not produce the way UF does.

Florida 'cares' about those sports because you have one of the top athletic budgets in the country. No mystery why it's schools with huge athletic budgets who give a shit about the Sears Cup. UiF and Stanford always top the list for a reason...

Miami is a piss-ant private school who disbanded the basketball program from 1972-1985 because of a lack of funds. Miami still doesn't have a men's golf program. Hell, the Canes almost dropped FOOTBALL in the late 70s and a narrow voting margin kept the program alive.

To be a small private school with NO money and to have FIVE football titles and FOUR baseball titles - while the big swinging-dick state school with state funding has TWO football titles, TWO basketball titles and ZERO baseball titles... THAT'S why y'all hate us. Miami is doing things it has no business doing on a shoestring budget while all the money in Florida can't buy the one thing you want - more titles and more tradition in your biggest cash cow sport.

If you had merely written that UM did a fine job of beating UF in baseball last night, your website and writing would be a lot more dignified and certainly more respected.

Yeah and a lot more boring. You want to read box scores and stats, go to hurricanesports.com.

You want to hear the opinions of a diehard Canes enthusiast and Gator hater, come around here.

As for respect, I get the respect of Miami's fan base - which is who I write for. I could give a hell what a Gator thinks about me.

    Gator OWNED. Out.

Good points, Kartik. I know you bleed that orange and green for this basketball team.

We've lost 13 straight to BC, but f the stats. If this team wants to make the dance, they know what's on the line here.

The Eagles are 1-10 in their past eleven games. They've been getting their asses kicked up and down the court since mid-January. They can't beat their meat right now. Miami gets BC at home, on ESPN U and in front of a big time crowd for the home finale with a tourney berth on the line. This is a must-win game against a team who is broken beyond repair. Streaks are made to be broken (look at UM/BC in football this year) and this is Miami's time.

If the Canes can't beat the Eagles, they don't deserve to be invited to the big dance.

As for Florida State, it's a rivalry game against a team 5-8 in their last 13 games. The Canes no showed for the 2/6 match up and get a shot at revenge on the 8th.

Miami better win one of two down the stretch. Neither team is ranked or even streaking right now. The Canes need these wins and have the personnel to pull it off.

Time to get hot as the season winds down. No excuses.
