Gators continue tradition of ducking Canes

Florida faithful are always quick to come up with excuses for why the Canes/Gators rivalry came to an end back in the late 80s, quickly bringing up their SEC schedule… yet never mustering up an answer for why Florida State remained on the schedule when Miami didn’t.

UF cites proximity while UM fans pointed to two national championships (’83 and ’87) and the fact that the Canes were on the rise and had the Gators’ number.

An article in today’s Miami Herald stated that the 2013 match up between Miami and Florida will be the last the rivalry could see for a while, with Gators AD Jeremy Foley reneging on a willingness to face UM twice every six years. Foley wants seven annual home games and while reeling Florida State will remain on schedule, rising Miami won’t get their shot at the state power.

Miami AD Kirby Hocutt stated that “Miami-Florida is good for college football” and was working to renew the rivalry. Foley shot it down.

Glad to see that twenty years later Florida still wants no part of Miami… unless that means welcoming mighty Florida International back to The Swamp.

  1. One of my fav games i've been to was the peach bowl a few years ago when the Canes dump the mighty gators (by the way Brock Berlin wasn't so bad after all), any way after Tebow leaves the Gators don't want any part of the U especially in the next few years, Go Canes!!!!

  2. If they actually follow through with giving us that game in '13 without buying out of it, I will be truly amazed.

  3. There is no choice between FSU and UF playing each other each and every season from 1958 to forever! It is a Florida mandated LAW that the two teams must play each other every season! There is no such law to have the Gators and Canes play each other.

  4. If they actually follow through with giving us that game in '13 without buying out of it, I will be truly amazed.

Fully agree. Let's see where Miami is by 2012 and where Florida is… most likely in the post-Urban era and light years past Timmy Teabag. Conversely, the Canes should be back on top by then.

If Florida isn't the stronger program then, guarantee 1000% they bag out of the game and just buy their way out.

  5. Miami needs Florida more than Florida needs Miami if for no other reason than to sell-out a home game.

  6. Funny the Gators would be running TOWARD the state legislature, Rgator. Usually we see you guys pawing the pavement & ducking down an alley.

  7. why is there a gator on this site? Oh well I'll be cheering for FSU now. Thanks for helping me decide.
Still why not have the rivalry I see no problem even for UF, they would get more money for the Miami game then FIU.

    (1) Nice "law'.

    (2) I guess there's no "room" on the schedule for Miami when you pencil in a Florida International.

… and as for "Miami needs Florida more than Florida needs Miami if for no other reason than to sell-out a home game", tell that to ESPN.

Check the rankings for last year's game at The Swamp — one of the highest ranked games in ESPN's history.

Florida was a top-ranked team and Miami was unranked, yet the game was one of the most viewed games of the season.

    Hmmmm.

ESPN's top-ranked games off all time include Miami. Two Miami v. Florida State match ups and Miami v. Florida.

Highest-ranked non-BCS bowl game last year was Miami v. Cal… but yeah, Gator idiot, keep telling yourself that "Miami needs Florida more than Florida needs Miami."

    Do your homework, tool.

  9. The small-dick syndrome that Gators suffer from is a freakin joke.

Florida is on top, yet their fans still troll here and worry about what Miami fans think.

No matter what the Gators do under Urban, their inferiority complex under the Canes continues. You all wish you had the dominance, the legacy and the resume UM has.

The NFL talent. The U "swagger". You'll never have it.

When you lose the SEC title game to Alabama and Timmy Teabag doesn't win the Heisman, make sure to tune into The U documentary to see what a real program has accomplished.

Hope you enjoyed the run, because once #15 leaves town next year, your run is over, faggots.

  10. What a joke. These UF tools think just because they won in recent years that they can stomp their feet and preach dynasty?

You tell me this, which dynasty was better, Miami's run in the early 2000's or UF's current run? You don't even want to compare now to the 80's because it wouldn't be a contest.

How is this even close to a Dynasty when in between your two national titles, you had a 4 loss season and a loss to Michigan in a bowl game, THE SAME MICHIGAN TEAM WHO LOST TO FCS APP STATE EARLIER IN THE YEAR.

Enjoy your "run" now hillbillies, follow in the footsteps of your cowardly AD and steer clear of the Hurricanes. Because although he is a coward, he's a smart coward and wants NO PART of Miami in the years to come.

  11. and yet.. here we are bitching about playing USF (essentially for the same reasons) .. UF doesn't want an L from us.. and we don't want an L from USF

  12. That's 10 rounds of throw down right there Gator scum. When you guys quit pissing your pants about how tough your schedule is, maybe you'll let that U (and I mean the one and only University of Miami)show what dominance means.

    WHOOOSH WHOOOSH!

  13. hahaha thats funny tebow is pretty gay anyways as for our canes im excited i see alot off fans doubtin thats not a true hurricane fan same idioits said we'd be lucky to go 1-3 to start the season are mad were sittin at 8-3 usf is good but not good enough 9-3 good bowl game 10-3 with a load of talent comin back next year one thing ive seen is chavez grant an van dyke play horrible sometimes id like to see the frshman mcgee get in there i also think with epps and grarham leavin this year maybe move byrd to tight end big tall strong an it wouldnt hurt our reciver depth since an he could be a real match up problem anyway go canes!!!!!!!!!!!! U all day if your not a true fan dont rep with the family when were dominatin these years comin up!! one more thing look at the top 10 this year boise? cincy? tcu? give us that schedule we'd win by 50 points every game to theres no way our schedule will start like this year to
    the top we go!!!!!!!!!

  14. Until they are willing to play the Canes on a regular basis, they will never be legitimate champions

  15. allCanes.com – all those ESPN stats are nice and probably true but here's my point:

UF is pretty happy with the overall athletic program right now and over the past few years. We have obviously been successful on the field and financially, as well.

Meanwhile, Miami has had a few down years.

Other than giving the fans an awesome game, what benefit is there for UF to put Miami on their schedule? We don't need the game to win championships and we don't need the game to fill seats or pay the bills.

  16. Digging that photo from the shirts hem down…

I was also at the Chick-fil-a bowl game when D. Hester wrecked the gayturds. Was fun watching their gator chomp fade out as the game went on !

Hated by many, loved by few, WE are the U

  17. Personally, I don't give a rat's arse if we play Florida or not. There are plenty of good teams out there for us to schedule. How about Alabama, Texas Tech, USC, another series with OU, Nebraska, or Oregon.

  18. BAHAHA! UM's last National Championship was what, 8 years ago? Stop lingering on such old news. It just eats you up that Florida has a better football program than Miami does and may have for a long time. Florida isn't trying to duck out of playing the "Almighty U" but actually playing against more competitive teams in the SEC. Not sure if you got to watch that game last year where UF won 26 to 3 against UM.

  19. The game was sold out because there are obviously a lot of Miami fans (most of which never went to school there or probably ever will) and also taking into consideration the size of the population in Miami it obviously makes sense that there would be a lot of fans. Who else would they root for? FIU? Not much homework that can be done for that. You're right though, it did make us a lot of money. I say keep it coming.

  20. I have mixed feelings about this. I really hate that we aren't playing this game anymore and I get really tired of the FIU's and Troy's of the world, but at the same time, I understand Foley's logic behind not scheduling this game or any other OOC away game for that matter. On average, a home football game is worth just under $2.5 million for UF. That is huge for the athletics department.

So give me one good reason why UF should travel down to Miami Gardens, give up that cash, and go fill up Landshark Stadium for the only time that whole season? That takes a lot of money out of UF's pocket and puts right it in UM's.

But this part of the article stood out the most to me:
"But Hocutt also said USF wants to extend the series beyond 2013, and “I'm not convinced it makes total sense for us.'' Hocutt said he wants to begin scheduling seven home games some years, beginning in 2011 or 2012."

So when this contract is up and UM doesn't want to schedule USF anymore, will we hear cries out of Tampa about UM "ducking" USF? I'm sure UM would have their reasons to not schedule that game anymore.

But the point is, even your own AD is admitting that having 7 home games is a good idea. UF has been doing that for years now, but they couldn't do that with 8 conference games (one of them at a neutral site) and two annual OOC home-and-home series. And since the only teams that agree to one-and dones are bad teams, you have that piss-poor OOC schedule.

But it's much easier for UM to do the 7 home game thing without any annual neutral site games and with FSU being a conference game nowadays.

Sure you can schedule teams like Oklahoma, OSU, and Nebraska, but even those games will feature the upper deck tarps as you saw with OU this year. Bottom line, Florida doesn't need this game, Miami does.

Also, Foley has said that there never have and never will be plans to get rid of the 2013 game.

PS: Not sure why you're upset about Gator posters on this blog. We have just as many Cane/Nole/Bulldog posters on our blogs and boards as this place does. People just like to check up on their rivals.

  21. and yet.. here we are bitching about playing USF (essentially for the same reasons) .. UF doesn't want an L from us.. and we don't want an L from USF

… difference is at least Miami signed on to PLAY South Florida and inked a five-year deal. Florida is ducking Miami yet again.

Randy, it's an old school rivalry that should still be played. Miami and Florida don't have to meet every year, but when working on the OCC schedule, why is Foley so against a home and away with the Canes every SIX years?

UM and UF should play at least 1-2 times per decade. Anything less is criminal.

So when this contract is up and UM doesn't want to schedule USF anymore, will we hear cries out of Tampa about UM "ducking" USF? I'm sure UM would have their reasons to not schedule that game anymore.

… but to Hocutt and Miami's credit, the Canes are adding Ohio State, Nebraska, etc. to the OOC schedule while Florida is playing FIU and Troy.

Hocutt was also working to get a home and home with Notre Dame that the Irish have since ducked.

Miami wants a piece of Florida as well and is looking to schedule quality OOC teams. Florida can't boast the same.

  22. Somebody remind Eve that our crackerjack team played them better than any other squad the entire year–in their own house. It was 9-3 in the fourth–I know, because I watched the game. But yea, final scores usually say everything. You learned that from Urban, didn't you? I noticed he thinks the world works like Madden. More points against FIU means you're more better. More better than Troy too.

This is getting old. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

  23. Evelyn, you don't like history because UF has very little of it. Spurrier plus 4 years with Meyer. And as dominating as Spurrier was in the SEC, that did not translate nationally. Remember Tommy Frazier?

As to selling out more games, it couldn't have anything to do with a small college town compared to major metropolitan and vacation destination could it? Size of the Student Body?

Gainesville is the Omaha/Tuscalousa/Fayetteville/Oxford/Baton Rouge of Florida.

College doesn't have a preseason, so I don't hold it against any team warming up with a creampuff. But, playing FIU in november stinks. Alabama vs Chattanooga, Michigan vs Delaware St. and Miami has been known to do it as well. With no playoff those games could be against top notch teams.

P.S. My dad is down in St. Pete and he says the bulls are really gearing up for the Canes. I hope we take them seriously.

  24. what i don't understand is why gator fans are spend their time reading a miami blog? you know how many gator blogs i read and comment on? 0.

  25. RGator is mistaken…. a bill demanding a UF vs. FSU football series was proposed in 1955 but was voted down. Secondly, the rivalry between the UF & UM has taken place more times than the UF-FSU game. Lastly, how in the world is USF being compared the the U? The Canes have played Florida 54 times, USF-UM isn't a rivalry they've only played once. Gators stop making excuses and man up. Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere.

  26. Get over it Canes fans! Gators never needed the Canes, they dont need them now, they dont need them next year or 5 years from now. Gon on with life and try to get back to the level of Gator football

And you don't want the loss either !!! That's the REAL excuse…you see us getting better, and that's bad for your ego because you do not want to be on the wrong side of the streak like you have been previously. Does 6 out of 7 ring any bells ???
    Enough said…

  28. Miami doesn't need the gaytors. It's the gaytors that need Miami. In order for urban cryer to really recruit south florida, he has to go through coral gables. unless he can show south florida recruits that they can consistently beat miami, miami will continue to lock down the 305 and the 954. just like every other coach east of the rockies, urban liar is salivating at the talent but too much of a wimp to even come try. he knows he'll never get any real players out of the 305 and 954 unless he man's up. Thing is i don't think he knows how to.

  29. The Gayturds are working within the sucky system that is BCS. They are rewarded for scheduling weak teams. I dont blame them for how they schedule if they get rewrded for it!

We should do the same thing! Only play the ACC and let our OC look just like theirs! In the long run, the fans lose out on good games, but at least you minimize your chances of falling out of the BCS Championship Series.

If everyone begins to work the system, then and only then will it change!

I loved the challenge that UM had in its schedule this year, but I'm sick of the bias in rewarding teams for playing pussycat schedules!

  30. I do agree with CanePhin-Royal Palm because it is true you can't change the system(the BCS) without realizing how crappy it is. You can see it with Texas, they will go into the championship game with out playing a top 25 team. is that fair? No!

BTW at least Miami is doing the right thing.Too bad UF doesn't have guts as well.

  31. CO_Gator has the most reasonable explanation for not playing UM that I have heard from a Gator fan yet. Part of me can understand why an athletic director, who is interested in keeping his job, would want to keep the 2.5 million in the pocket of his athletic department. However, it shows the sad state of college football. Rivalries are not supposed to be about who makes millions and who does not. Rivalries are simple; rivalries are about who can smack who in the mouth and gain bragging rights for the year, or decade, or whatever. Rivlaries are compelling due to their history. Rivalries make college football well… college football. Unfortunatley, the UM/UF rilvalry will lose out on years of history and fierce competition over money. South Florida and UM simply do not have any history and can't be considered a rivalry. The gator flop, UM losing to UF in the opener and then winning a championship, and me getting my first beer spilled on me by some old lady gator fan in the west endzone of the OB…when I was in the 5th grade, etc. are all things that help add to great rivalries. UM/UF should be played because it is a rivalry not because it will gain either school an excessive amount of money. Man up Foley and play the game.

    LB

By the way Evelyn, most gator fans did not attend UF either as can be said for any university so, not a very intelligent argument.

  32. I now live in Melbourne, FL, since leaving Miami. The # of Gator fans Here is sickening. I guess the thing is to follow the crowd. Anyway, is it just me or did the Gators have about as easy a schedule as anyone could have? 1 ranked team (LSU) and they haven't looked too good. I guess the NCAA wanted to make sure UF didn't lose it's #1 ranking. Apparently, that's easy to do when you don't actually play anybody. Now, we'll see if Alabama can take care of them. I am surprised though that Carlos Dunlap is not going to play at all. I was sure that he would be suspended for a half or maybe not at all. 2013, Gators and 'Canes. I can hardly wait. Do you realize that in 2013 all the Gator fans, alumni, or whatever will be asking the same question: "What ever happened to Tim Tebow?"

  33. That last one was from me (Melbourne, FL). If at any time I ever put any other comments on this site, I will refer to myself as "Willis". Has anyone been here since I posted that comment? Whatever the case, here's more! As of today, Saturday, Dec. 5 at 7:41P.M. EST, it's official, the University of Florida Gators Suck! No national championship and no more Heisman's for you Timmy. That is so awesome!!! Up next, one of the many bowl games for UF and then I guess, Tim Tebow will be going pro. Picture this: Tim Tebow vs. Ray Lewis. Who wins?
