Game Twelve : South Florida 23, Miami 20 (OT)

… and there you have it. So many ways to pick this one apart; it’s too easy.

Randy Shannon, the assistants and the players … the way you went out today is unforgivable and unacceptable. Shut out in the first half and stumbling down the stretch with the game on the line.

Weeks back Stephen Morris threw a rope to Leonard Hankerson for the game-winner against Maryland.

This week, the exact opposite as Jacory Harris sailed a duck towards a corner who was covering LaRon Byrd in the final moments of a tie game. Miami could’ve run and set Matt Bosher up for a field goal attempt, but inexplicably Harris went for the home run, noodle-armed it and South Florida forced overtime … which can be summed up as a three-and-out disaster on offense and another horrendous showing by the Canes’ rushing defense.

Kirby Hocutt, you went on allCanes Radio this week and stated the following:

“At ‘The U’, we don’t change expectations, we meet them.”

“We expect to be relevant nationally.”

The expectation of this fan base is to field a competitive football team that both plays with heart and maximizes its talent. There is no excuse for 7-5 and to be unranked at this point of the season.

Furthermore, forget about being relevant nationally – after this dog of a season (and worst home record since 1997), the Canes aren’t even relevant in the Sunshine State.

I am reading into your comments and pray that come tomorrow you drop the hammer and do what needs to be done in effort to make the Miami Hurricanes relevant again.

Way too much talent to go out like chumps.

Full ‘recap’ and rant coming Sunday … or Monday.

  • You wrote a year ago:

"Right after those ranks Saturday's 31-10 beat down of South Florida, this year's season finale in Tampa over a lesser program itching to crack the Sunshine State's "Big Three". Keep dreaming about the big time, Bulls."

So with wins over FSU and Miami, what do you have to say now, AllCanes?

  • I am 37 and been a Canes fan since I remember watching football. I like Shannon as a person and a D coordinator. But please, I am begging those that make the decisions, to fire Shannon while you can get a Gruden, Leach or even Leavitt. We don't have the enrollment or stadium to compete nationally...if we lose our aura completely. Under no circumstances can we tolerate 7-5 and a mediocre bowl. I am BEGGING! Keep in mind...FSU blows us out, one win is vs. FCS FAMU and we lose to UVA...there first non-FCS win of the year. WE ARE THE U...HAVE HIGH STANDARDS!!!!

  • Pretty simple, USF.

You want "proof" you guys are nobody? You're blowing yourselves over beating what turned into a 7-5 Miami team - in OT, after Harris gave it away in regulation with a pointless throw and pick.

Last year USF beat a FSU squad that went 6-6 in the regular season, earning Bobby Bowden a pink slip.

The Bulls are 7-4 and lost to a bad Florida team, as well as anybody significant in the Big East -- Syracuse, West Virginia and Pitt (and still have UConn next week, who should win the conference).

So in the end, you're title-less ... you will most likely have a 7-5 record ... and you're bragging about beating what turned into a bad Miami team, a worse Florida State team (last year) and an about-to-be 7-5 Florida team kicking your ass by 24.

You're literally digging up quotes from a year ago to "sell" this point as well. It's laughable, my friend.

Miami will always be Miami and you'll always be nobody - hanging your hopes on nailbiting wins over good programs that are down. When have you EVER won a meaningful game? Seriously.

Enjoy you big win, little man.

  • Below are the list of University of Miami coaches and their respective records:

Schnellenberger FOUR YEARS at Miami: 41-16
Jimmy Johnson FIVE YEARS at Miami: 52-9
Dennis Erickson SIX YEARS at Miami: 63-9
Butch Davis SIX YEARS at Miami: 51-20 *ON PROBATION*
Larry Coker SIX YEARS at Miami: 60-15
Randy Shannon FOUR YEARS at Miami 28-22

Randy Shannon has now lost more games than any Miami head coach *IN MODERN* history………DESPITE being here the least number of years…..

  • This season is beyond a failure after the previous 3. Some people are going to fault Morris (which his INT did set up a USF score), but if Berry doesn't fumble AGAIN, like he did at the 1 yard line, this is a totally different game. Instead, Jacory is inserted and after brief sparks in the second half, another unclutch moment as he literally throws the game away with 14 seconds left in the 4th. Harris supporters will say "Oh, he hasn't played in 3 weeks, he's rusty". That doesn't matter, he started for an entire season and a half, if he ain't gettin' it by now, he's not gonna get it.
My question is, why is Miami even throwing in that situation? The Canes had USF spread out, why not just run a simple draw in the middle of the field and allow Bosher a FG attempt with a few seconds remaining? Yes, Bosher has been less than automatic this season, but it's still your best play at the time.
I think anyone that's ever read my posts knows I try to be as realistic and objective (much like this blog's author) as possible, but there's a very slim chance that this team will do anything next year after 5 losses. I've said before that people shouldn't get too high on this team until the end of the season to see how everything plays out and now it's painfully obvious to see that this team is maddeningly inconsistent on all levels. It seems like with each loss there's a different goat. I hate to see anyone be fired, but it's hard to see how Shannon is retained after this season. If the players have his back as they have suggested over the last few weeks, how come the younger players have been constantly outplaying the upperclassmen? The ONLY positives to be encouraged about next season? If you ask me, the emergence of Miller, S. Johnson, Morris, and Henderson. Other than those 4 players, what can Miami fans really hang their collective hats on? Even the most optimistic fan has to be quite worried, especially after this team having such high aspirations, only to now be crowned the WORST team in the state.
My, how the mighty have fallen...

  • Ah, yes. HUGE win for the Bulls. They should erect a statue of Skip Holtz for this one.

Forget the other four losses to doormats, this season has truly been defined by this EPIC win over a 7-5 Canes team that was 2-2 down the stretch entering today's thriller. You know, the won that a about 4,365 fans witnessed.

Bulls fans are treating this shit like a national title and Miami fans tuned out as soon as the Virginia game was in the books.

But yes, little toro, SO much credit to your team for finding a way. And by "a way", I mean Ja-pick-ory Harpiss tossing his most bonebrained pick of the year in those final seconds, which is saying a lot.

  • Whatever. Typical. Anytime USF beats one of the big 3, it's just because that Big 3 team sucked.

As for the Florida game, we were winning in the 4th quarter.

Right now, USF can play on the field with any school in Florida, which is something that all fans of the Big 3 said would never happen. We have the coach, we have the recruiting, we have the fan base, we play in an AQ conference...we are not going anywhere. See you next year in Tampa. And you can make excuses about "giving the game away," blah blah, but did it escape your attention that we played the second half and overtime with a Freshman walk on because our QB was injured?

AllCanes.com has got to be the smuggest collection of delusional fools oni the internet. The posters and bloggers at the 7th Floor are downright gracious--not to mention geniuses--by comparison.

No wonder Miami doesn't want to continue the series. You have nothing to gain by showing the world that we're on your level in every wsy.

See you in Tampa next year. Leave your excuses at home.

  • Florida, five losses.

    Miami, five losses.

Florida State, six losses last year.

"Anytime" USF beats one of the "big three"? It's happened twice - once to a six-loss Florida State team and once to a five-loss Miami team.

If you want to hype your program for beating good programs in the midst of bad years, good on you. But don't expect the rest of us to play along.

Look at you. Lurking here on a different Canes blogs and seeking approval or a pat on the back for this little win.

If anything, Miami fans should be thanking you as this five-loss season might just get Randy fired.

Oh yeah, and Rob nailed it regarding you pulling up quotes from a year ago.

Today's game looked like a scrimmage, but it was the Orange Bowl Classic to you goons.

  • Dear Santa,
I've been a good 'Canes fan for the majority of my time hear on earth. I only want one thing this christmas! Chucky roaming the sidelines for the 'Canes next season. I know its expensive, and my parents claim they dont have the money, but Ive been really, REALLY good this year!

All joking aside, this loss changes everything. The 'Canes have to make a coaching change, for this reason! If we don't we are relegated to irrelevant in the off season. We need to change for the simple fact that we need attention. A Gruden hire would be up there with LeBron's "decision"! It doesn't matter what it costs! Gruden gets hired, my Alumni check book is open for the first time in 7 years!! The uppers in the Gables, HAVE TO RECOGNIZE what a hire like this could do (see Pete Carrol).......for the record, Im a Randy fan, and have been since day one, but if Gruden has any remote interest in coaching this team, WE HAVE TO MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!
