Burns Is A Miami Hurricane

Nothing like a little good news to balance out last week’s bad.

A few days after the Yahoo! Police attempted to throw some cold water on the University of Miami, indirectly impacting recruiting, the Canes reeled in a big fish Monday morning when four-star cornerback Artie Burns pledged his allegiance to ‘The U’.

Burns, a former Alabama commitment, is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound cornerback out of Miami Northwestern and he chose Miami over LSU, Florida State, Southern Cal and Louisville.

A big reason Burns committed to the hometown team; the fact that UM sends a slew of defensive backs to the NFL, as well as wanting to wind up somewhere that feels like home.

With Miami expected to only sign between 13 and 15 kids in the 2013 class, head coach Al Golden continues cherry-picking quality talent. Burns is the fifth four-star UM has added to this class and he’s currently ranked 69th on the ESPN Top 150 in their recruiting database.

While Burns is committed to UM he has stated that he will take five official visits to the schools in his top five.

  1. I don,t understand. If he is signed, sealed and delivered, why the visits? I guess i don,t understand the complexities of college recruiting ???

    1. … because they’re kids and this is the time of their lives. If you’re top talent, why WOULDN’T you take the free trips to Southern Cal, Florida State, etc.?

By saying he’s committed and sold on Miami, other schools recruiting him will still give their, pitch, invite him to campus and will work to sell him … but they’re doing so knowing he’s “committed”, as opposed to wide open in the search, which would have everyone still coming at him full court press for his verbal.

  2. So does this mean he,s off the table, signed sealed and delivered, od does it mean a verbal, which ca n be retracted and any time. After all, why would another school waste their money if there was NO CHANCE he could be signed???

Just asking because i really don,t know the various steps in t he recruiting process.wickliffe,

    1. No one is ‘signed, sealed and delivered’ until Signing Day, unless they are an early enrollee and arrive in January.

Because of that, other schools continue to recruit kids until it is official. Most kids stay committed, some have a change of heart last minute. Welcome to the world of recruiting in 2012. High school kids become superstars overnight and enjoy soaking up the process.

No signs point to Burns signing anywhere other than Miami, but stranger things have happened. UM has been left at the altar, but has also landed kids last minute. Go back and look at Golden’s class in 2011 and how he and his staff flipped about eight kids in the final weeks of recruiting. It can happen both ways.
