Another loss equals another gain; Miller to The U

For the second week in a row the Miami Hurricanes dropped a close game on Saturday, yet reeled in a big time recruit a few days later. Last week it was defensive back Kayvon Webster. This week, Lamar Miller – the top running back prospect in the state of Florida.

Many wondered if Miller would be the odd man out as Miami already has commitments from top tailback Bryce Brown, a five-star out of Kansas and four-star Mike James of Davenport (FL).

Miller is a four-star out of Killian High in Miami, measuring in at 5-foot-11, 205 lbs. and runs a 4.4-forty. Miller chose Miami over Florida, Florida State, LSU, UCF, West Virginia, etc. and considers his commitment around 90%, stating he will take other visits between now and February.

Miller has been compared for former Miami back Clinton Portis and has been a Canes fan since childhood. He also has the support of family, who had hoped Miller would stay close to home for school.

For those who’ve watched the Canes these past few weeks, you’ve seen Graig Cooper giving it his all as a one-man show. With Javarris James out since early September, none of the other tailbacks have stepped up and secured the number two spot.

Cooper was effective for a half in a 28-24 loss to North Carolina, though virtually non-existent against Florida State, where Miami played from behind en route to a 41-39 loss.

A lack of running game doesn’t appear to be a problem in 2009 with J. James a senior, Cooper a junior and a steady stable of freshman backs in Brown, M. James and Miller, barring all three are on board come signing day.

Another good pick up for The U. Welcome, Lamar.

  1. Welcome indeed. I’m just dying to see us get some O-line commitments. I’ll be patient as this season is just about at the half way mark. Hopefully I’ll have a bowl to look forward to and not just recruiting news come December.

  2. Shouldn’t we wait till he signs on the dotted line before we say welcome to “THE U FAMILY”? Verbal commitment is not concrete comment by no means..

But of course. We just saw this with Patrick Johnson last year.

That said, a lot of kid verballed last year and stuck to their word. Forston. A Johnson. J Harris.

I’m the first to say not to get overly excited regarding a verbal commitment, but Randy’s done a good job getting kids to stick to their word, only losing a few in the process last year.

Wouldn’t surprise me if one of these three backs goes a different route, but for now it at least deserved to be mentioned and there’s no reason to not ‘welcome’ a kid who just pledged his commitment on some level.

  4. RBs are nice, but let’s hope for sime big-time DBs and O-Linemen. Those are an absolute must.

  5. I hope B. Brown doesn’t see his brother’s lack of playing time and break his commitment to us. We need that guy yesterday!

  6. kartik – Arthur not being on the field has everything to do with him and his game. Putting that on the coaches is a scapegoat.

Sean Spence came in the same time Arthur Brown did and he’s been a force from game one. He’s now first team with Brown moved to second.

Both are true freshman and one is seeing more playing time than the other.

Maybe they don’t do it in Kansas like we do in South Florida, with a lot of these Northwestern kids getting it done day one.

Bryce just needs to get his job done and then be ready to compete with Mike James and Lamar Miller.

  7. well it looks like A. Brown is going to get his chance to play this weekend because of all the injuries at linebacker.

I have a question for you allcanes, there was a lot of hype around Allen Bailey during the spring and fall but he hasn’t been too dominant. You think its because he had that pectoral injury and isn’t a 100%?

I think Bailey is still learning the position and most of the hype came from the message boards and super fans. At day’s end, this is still a first year starter and there are going to be some growing pains.

Also, Bailey is only going to be as good as the line he plays on and Miami’s defensive line is pretty damn down this year.

Bailey will breakout 2009 and should be a superstar 2010.

  9. That sounds about right. I definitely agree with you about him breaking out next year and his sr. season. He’s a freaking monster. I don’t know if you’ve seen him in person but I see him on campus a lot and he is the most intimidating looking human being I’ve ever seen. He’s gonna reek havoc on the field sooner or later.

I understand.. I’m just a firm believer of actions speak louder than words.. If you know what I mean?
