Three’s baaaaaaaaaaack…..

Kyle Wright was named starter for this week’s match up against FIU. Randy Shannon made the call earlier this morning. This will be Wright’s first start since suffering a wrist injury in a 17-10 loss against Virginia Tech last season. Shannon stated that it won’t be a “round robin deal” and that “it’s going to be the Kyle Wright show for right now.”

I don’t want to hang too much on that last comment, but I have to admit it’s getting tiresome to hear about who is the guy “for now”. After last week’s 51-13 debacle at Oklahoma, even a blind man could see that Kirby Freeman played himself out of a starting role for the foreseeable future. Nothing about his performance had anyone believing he could lead the Canes to success against any team better than the likes of a Nevada.

Wright is 14-7 as Miami’s starter with 4,123 passing yards and 27 touchdowns in 24 career appearances. He’s completed 59.3 percent of his passes – which ranks as fourth-best in Quarterback U’s history.

Um, why was Freeman named starter again? Wright sure has had his pitfalls, but as stated around this blog for months now – he gives Miami a better shot to win on his worst day than Freeman does on his best.

Here’s hoping Wright goes out and lights up FIU so that this quarterback ‘debate’ is squashed out once and for all. We don’t need anymore flip-flopping before next Thursday’s match up against Texas A&M.

  1. Glad to see Wright back where he belongs, as the starting QB. I was always a Wright fan, even when he was at his worst, and was dissapointed when i found out Freeman was getting the start. I supported Freeman just as i did Wright, but i was more than thrilled to see Wright come in against OU. However, as you stated, this back and fourth with the QB’s has got to stop. Name your guy, and stick with him. If Wright is looking over his shoulder constantly then hes just going to play worse, let him know that hes the guy and hell be backed through his ups and downs.

  2. I agree with the change, but how quickly we forget. Let’s remember how last year we were all screaming for Freeman. What’s going to happen if Wright struggles against A&M or in a few weeks against Georgia Tech? Will we be calling for Freeman back?

  3. Let’s remember how last year we were all screaming for Freeman.

I never once screamed for Freeman. Go back and check the blog. I’ve been in Wright’s corner from the get go. I blamed our staff for underdeveloping the five-star and have oft stated I believe #3 gives us a better chance to win that #7.

Both are damaged goods on some level, but potential-wise Wright has much more upside than Freeman – no matter how this all plays out.

Freeman has never looked good to me. His wins are against Boston College (3 INT, 1 TD), Nevada and Marshall and in each case, it was the defense which bailed him out. He’s never done anything to prove he’s ‘starting quarterback caliber’ at Miami.

  4. I’m just hoping that this was the wake up call Wright needed to get his act together and play the position that was once occupied by greats from Kelly to Dorsey. While it is not completely his fault for his lack of progress, he needs to hold himself accountable. I’d like to see himself assert himself on and off the field, and I’ve never heard that leadership voice coming from him. Freeman definitely ruined any chances of keeping the job.

  5. Did anyone else find it offensive that Ray Lewis was roaming the Maryland sideline last night??? Wrong UM Ray!!!

  6. Allcanes it wasn’t a shot at you directly. I was making that comment at some of our fans who get upset if we don’t win every game 50-3. Last year many fans were calling for Freeman, and never wanted to see Wright after he got hurt. My comment was targeted at those people. How soon they forget. They don’t want to admit we are rebuilding. Coker left us with slim piockings, and what he left no one helped develop (Wright & Legget). It’s sad but it looks like we are back in 1997-1998. Hopefully we can pull off that UCLA type upset to get us back on track soon.
