The Down Low On Art Kehoe…

His departure and the after effects were anything but pretty. That said, few have the UM resume of former Canes player and coach Art Kehoe. He is as diehard and old school as it gets.

Three years after his firing as Miami’s long-time offensive line coach, Kehoe will finally get his due when he’s honored by his peers after the First Annual Spring Game Alumni AfterParty on Saturday Miami 28th.

The festivities will take place at Miami Prime Grill in N. Miami Beach, where Kehoe will receive the first Canes-4-Life Lifetime Dedication Award.

Get out there and support this legendary Miami coach this weekend.

  1. If Art was still around here I can tell you one thing, there would have never been a dull or lackadaisical day a greentree.

  2. Miami hasn’t had the talent at OL for years and that’s Art’s fault. He never went after the right guys. Like you said, he recruited guys that were like him. Undersized but with heart. That’s great for a movie like “Rudy”, but in real life it’s all about talent. There’s no substitute for tall, heavy and strong linemen with good technique. Miami never got those guys under Art and if they did get a big guy, he was usually show and unathletic.

I like the five new linemen of the last two classes, but they better pan out and we better get 3-4 more guys in next year’s class. The Canes need a solid line to protect Jacory and to assist the run. Right now this is another decent line with old vets that haven’t panned out and young guys who are yet to have an impact. It needs to all come together or this can be another rough year.

  3. We should have never gotten rid of Art Kehoe, he exemplified what the ‘Canes are about, guys like that you never let go. BRING COACH KEHOE BACK!!!

  4. Congrats Art. It’ll be a great celebration. With that in mind, Ole Miss is the right place for you.

    Solid article, AllCanes.

  5. this is one thing that has always bothered me as being a long time cane fan…is how quick most of our fans are to say get this guy out of here or fire him…like stoutland…he is doing a nice job and is recruiting and winning in the trenches on many cases in the recruiting wars..i know randy is going into his third year and some people are saying if he does not get it done this year he should be gone…to me that is ludacris…how does anyone really think we are going to get this program turned around in such a bad state by just firing coach after coach and having to keep installing new scheme after new scheme…these players will never develop like this…i guess i am just a realist on this…we have got to take our green and orange shades off for a bit…give stoutland similar time we gave art…and i can bet you great things will happen…the same with randy…i mean his first top flight recruiting class are sophmores…you have to give coaches a four year go from their first class to see if anything will happen…i keep saying it..give all these guys a chance…keep them on board…keep the energy down there…the recruiting…the motivating and we will be back where we want to be…we are probablly three years away to be realistic…i dont want to see another kyle wright i feel aweful for the kid…went through what 3 or 4 oc’s and is struggling to make a nfl team as a free agent…we have ruined kids these past 4-6 years because of shit like this…and people forget it is these kids that this is all about…these young men that work their asses off for us a die hard fans… i guess i am just a players fan and a players coach speaking get a grip with this firing shit…i dont want to see another country club larry win with butch davis players…if we keep on this track…jacory will turn out like kyle wright…and someone else will win with randy’s players…just stupid

  6. Good points, VA… and again, the reason I wrote what I wrote above. A reminder that Art’s career was a little sloppy down the stretch.

Any fans who think Miami is back, they’re wrong. Not yet. With this schedule 8-4 would be a solid. 9-3 would be great. 7-5 would be acceptable… as long as there was growth and the team improved as the year went on.

All this talk about getting rid of Shannon, I wonder if our superfans remember that nobody else wanted this job.

All this talk about Tommy Tuberville waiting in the wings — that’s message board chatter. Miami is a tough gig, this is a big time clean up effort and Shannon is working tirelessly to get things right. People need to give it time. Shannon. Stoutland. Young players waiting to develop. The talent is returning, but depth is being built and newbies are getting experience. That doesn’t happen overnight.

  7. I about punched the screen when I caught the air of your post.

However, the truth of it has brought me to my senses. I was a huge Kehoe proponent, & felt his dismissal was nothing but an unfortunate squander on our part. You clearly lay out this was not the case, & the success of the early '00's was the exception, while giving voice to his rabid U passions.

Excellent, knowledgeable points. Well done. I applaud Kehoe, & hope the best for him.

  8. First, sorry to respond to a blog that was started so long ago that many of you could probably care less about the subject now. I just googled Art’s name and this is one the things that popped up.

This is why the internet and especially blogging are so dangerous, people spewing opinions and misinformation and stating them like they are facts. I just want to touch on a few things that were brought up by the original poster and some of the responses.

To state that Art was “The One-Man Miami Hype Machine” and wasn’t or I should say isn’t a stellar offensive line coach is disgusting. Kehoe is one of the finest coaches in his field and was a very important part of Miami’s success through his tenure there. To my knowledge he is still the only coach to hold 5 national title rings. But I guess you guys will just act like he was lucky to be there for the ride and didn’t have an important role in the Cane’s success, just the failures before his firing.

Coach Kehoe was fired for one reason and one reason only. Coker was on thin ice and needed to make some changes to save his own job. If the “U” went on the following year to a BCS bowl, an ACC or Nat’l Title then the man looks like he’s a genius for getting rid of the problems that were holding them back. But let’s remember what actually did happen. The Canes got worse and then Mr. Coker suffered the embarrassment of not finishing the season before his firing. Art then sued the U not for wrongful termination, but because the College which is notoriously cheap refused him his severance package that every other coach who was fired got. The U felt he got a hired to quickly and pulled it back. The lawsuit did include the bowl bonus. And as bad as that game was and as much as the University would have liked to have seen a big win they still received all those millions in revenue and all of the other coaches who didn’t perform exceptionally well, got paid! Your beloved Randy Shannon’s defense also gave up 40 points and I’m pretty sure he kept his bonus.

As far as the offensive line, are your memories that short? The lines from 2000 thru 2002 were amazing. Especially the ’01 line is considered to be one of the greatest lines ever. Do you people understand the definition of “Ever”? In a hundred and some years of NCAA football, that line that was assembled and coached by Art is considered at the top. Do you know how many o-line coaches would kill to be able to say they were part of something that spectacular? And somebody stated that his only having 6 All Americans in 27 years is an underachievement. Well he was a GA for a few of those years, a tight ends coach and an assistant O-line coach. Having 6 A.A. in that span is a hell of an accomplishment and no where near a negative. That could have been the most moronic statement made about him. I also know the lines may a slipped after ’02 compared to the run that should have been 3 titles in a row (not just 1) but they also got knocked around with some nasty injuries and the whole team dipped to a certain extent from a top 1, 2, 3 caliber team to a top 15/ 25 team. It wasn’t only the line’s or Art’s fault.

  10. Part2….

When it comes to Art’s horrible recruiting, I have to make sure its known by you experts that a coach doesn’t recruit just his position. He is assigned a section of Florida and also a region of the country. And then they recruit all the top prospects and needs in that region. Some of his recruits other than getting “lucky” with Mckinnie include Gore, Shields, Greg Mark, Baby James (I know he’s a legacy), Leon Searcy, Rob Chudzinzki, and 4 of the 5 projected starters on this upcoming seasons line. There are scores more that panned out and plenty that didn’t because that’s how recruiting goes. He also has something like a 11 guys he coached or recruited on pro rosters going into this season.
Saying Art was “left behind” through all those coaching changes is quite misleading. He was GA when Schnellenberger left, and was guaranteed to be able to continue to go to grad school for free at the U. I’m not sure how many GA’s leave with an out going coach. J.J. offered him a position with the Cowboys but it would have been an admin type of position to start because of his lack of fulltime assistant experience and Art wanted to stay in coaching not compiling stats. Plus he would have been younger than half the players. He was offered the interim job after Erickson left and guaranteed a spot under Butch. Plus Dennis was a drunk. And after Butch left he was part of the whole movement to keep the H.C. in house ergo Coker

Hey Allcanes, you have a great store and are obviously a successful business man but maybe you should stick to selling tee shirts and being a Canes groupie and not write nasty things about a person who was at one time a friend of yours. See you failed to mention that before you wrote your critically acclaimed lump of dog Sh**, you and Art had a little verbal argument about Randy Shannon’s head coaching career at the U. Like he so often does when he talks about something he’s passionate about, Coach Kehoe owned you and gave you a verbal ass whooping and you whimpered away and wrote this masterpiece. So next time you decide to write something about someone because he hurt your feelings be a grown man and state all your feelings to his face and not on some blog when he’s a thousand miles away, ( you feel better about yourself) especially when someone researching him for a possible job opportunity googles him and sees this. It’s gutless and classless no matter how he hurt your precious feelings.

Please at least be fare and post this…

  11. So it's know, Harry Rothwell of allCanes had ZERO to do with this article. He doesn't write for this blog and has never written for this blog. The opinions of this blog do not reflect the opinions of management.

  12. Nicely put – Art is a stand up guy and losing him was one of the U's most shameful moments. Anyone looking for a cheap shot at this point obviously just has an axe to grind.
