The Beast : This & That

I apologize for the recent hiatus. allCanes GM Harry Rothwell (@MRallCanes) and I road tripped it up to Jacksonville for the allCanes Radio Show and Canes Spring Tour. The drive up was fine, but attempting the journey back right after the event ended; it was like Heartbreak Hill in the Boston Marathon. Lucky for us I-95 runs pretty straight down the east coast, so it was all about cruise control, classic rock and family-sized cups of sweet tea in effort to keep us rolling. When it was all said and done, my head hit the pillow at 3:45am and that said, I’d still do it all over again.

My reasoning for the Jacksonville road trip was pretty simple; I wanted to meet and chat up fellow Canes from the northern part of the state. One of my favorite things about what I do is getting to talk shop with Miami fans and diving into the U Family any chance I get. Being that I live in a house where Sebastian battles Albert on a daily basis, I need that orange and green buzz to stay right and this week was another great opportunity to chat up some fans of ‘The U’ and it was blast.

For those of you who didn’t make the event, tune into Wednesday’s edition of allCanes Radio as we’ll break it all down there. You can check out the show at allCanes.com or you can stream live through the allCanes iPhone app.

On the diamond, Miami baseball is embarking on a big time road trip – Virginia-bound to take on the number one team in the nation, the Cavaliers. UVA arguable has the best starting pitching rotation in the nation and their weekend starters have a combine ERA of 1.82. Opponents are only batting .211 against the entire Cavs pitching staff and Miami bats haven’t exactly been explosive this year, so it’d appear the Canes are in for another challenge.

This series won’t make or break the year as Miami is headed to the post-season, but last Sunday’s loss to Hofstra lowered the Canes’ RPI by about eight spots. A few wins against Virginia and Miami has a chance to stay home for the regionals. This will be a tough series, but a lot is on the line and the Canes can get it done. Question is, will they?

Lastly, a hearty congrats to all of the new U graduates. I remember when it was my moment to walk across that stage, shaking hands, getting that diploma and then thinking, “what now?”

The simple life of a student. In the moment you think your world is completely upside down and complicated, but sitting here a few weeks shy of thirty-five, I laugh and my notion that college life was too tough. Still, the one thing I can always say regarding any challenge sent my way since graduating back in 1998 – I’ve been able to take them all on confidently thanks to the foundation that was built during my time at The U.

IN OTHER NEWS : I was beyond overjoyed to find out that Santana Moss will be signing autographs at allCanes on Saturday May 21st at 5pm. No. 6 coined the phrase, “big time players step up in big games” after his performance in the upset of No. 1 Florida State back in 2000. (Old school Canes will remember Rohan Marley saying, “big time players make big time plays” as Miami was taking down Florida State in 1994 — the original Hurricanes’ win against the defending national champs.)

In order to reserve your spot for the Moss signing session, ring Harry up at 305.661.9011 or shoot him an email. Go Canes!

  • Miami's baseball program took one more step toward mediocrity today. The once-proud UM program is now 4-11 against ranked competition this year.

It's sad to see over the past several years. This ballclub is prone to errors, poor defense, questionable pitching and inconsistent hitting. The poor state of the football program has generally overshadowed how bad of shape the baseball program is for the past several years.

Perhaps this year, when Miami is once again fails to even make it to the CWS, people will start to take notice and demand changes.

Until then, more disappointment ahead. Hope I'm wrong but the UM baseball team proved me right yet again today.

  • Tough to upset the #1 team in the country and win a series when the same mistakes are made over and over. Canes unfortunately blew a golden opportunity this weekend. Even if they win the ACC Tournament, I don't see a scenario where they'll host a regional. Let's hope they can put it all together come postseason time.
