The Beast : The Leach Phenomenon

It really shouldn’t come as a surprise. Hurricane Nation always tends to jump on one bandwagon or another.

Whether it’s going to games when ‘The U’ is winning, or getting ‘hooked’ on a name when a coaching vacancy is available, it’s more of the same in Coral Gables.

This current bandwagon is being navigated by ‘The Pirate’ himself, Mike Leach.

Leach is the current ‘flavor of the week’ that fans are latching on to. In the past it was names lime Marc Trestman, Greg Schiano, Bobby Petrino, Steve Kragthorpe or Brian Kelly. The fans always have ‘someone’ they’re ready to anoint the next great.

Look, there’s no denying that Leach’s offense would be explosive on the turf at Sun Life and no one can argue the damage he did with lower-tier recruits would be exponentially better with top-tier guys.

There’s also no doubt that his enigmatic personality, would in some way fit perfect in a town more enigmatic than anywhere else in the nation. However, there’s a lot more to “it” than just that.

When you’re looking for a head coach, you’re looking for the face of your program and a guy that not only gets it done with Xs and Os, but can also raise money, shake hands, schmooze boosters, kiss babies, all while becoming an integral part of the community. Simply put, I don’t get the sense that Leach is that guy.

Miami just fired a coach, not just for his record on the field but also because he failed miserably at several of the things mentioned above. (Need more proof? Dig up some of my past blogs about Randy’s wonderful dealings with the media.)

Fans also have to realize that UM has a pretty good file on Leach. They’ve interviewed him before and whether he was sporting a Hawaiian shirt or a suit, or sober vs. tipsy, everything I can tell you is that Leach didn’t fare well in the interview. Period.

There’s also that small matter of the pending litigation against both his former employer, as well as ESPN – yes, that same ESPN that loves to put Miami on national television.

Do I think Leach should get an interview? Absolutely. It definitely can’t hurt and if anything, depending on who winds up the Canes’ next head coach, you might want to give The Pirate a crack at being your offensive coordinator. The demotion might bruise his ego a bit, but then again his phone hasn’t been ringing off the hook lately with head coaching offers.

We’d all love to live in that fantasy world where Miami would score 70 points a game with Leach as head coach. But unfortunately we live in the real world where you need more than just a great offensive mind to lead a program that’s where UM currently sits today.

Another thing about Leach; his recent media blitz reeks of desperation. It’s one thing to do an interview or two, but in the past week he’s been on more shows than Gloria Alred. Last week when I was a guest on the Jack Arute Sirius/XM show, co-hosted by Leach, the first thing Arute asked me was for the cell number of Kirby Hocutt. Off the bat, Arute wanted to let UM’s athletic director know that ‘The U’ should hire Leach.

We get it guys. He’s interested in the job.

On a daily basis I’m asked who I want to see as Miami’s next head coach. I guess after Grudengate, I’m still a little numb and my brain has been to tired to really ponder it.

Randy Edsall. Tommy Tuberville. Marc Trestman. Jim Harbaugh. Chris Petersen. Gary Patterson. I’ve done my research on all the ‘candidates’, as did my boy Canes305, who really broke things down yesterday.

Harbaugh would have to be atop my list, though many believe he’d be Ann Arbor-bound if Rich Rodriguez is leg go after the bowl game. I’m not so sure that’d be the case though, as Harbaugh fired a pretty good shot at his alma mater a few years back.

Many believe Harbaugh has NFL aspirations, which is fine. So did Jimmy Johnson, Dennis Erickson and Butch Davis.

I don’t see Petersen leaving Boise State and I’m not sure the west coaster would be able to relate to South Florida kids, anyways.

Edsall is intriguing and he’s a Tom Coughlin protege that has spent some time at the next level, which is always a plus when talking about Miami. He might not be that big splash this program needs, though and while talking about coaches in the northeast, I’m absolutely off the Greg Schiano bandwagon.

I tried to make the case the other night on allCanes Radio against overpaying for a head coach. It’s one thing to give a Jon Gruden and his resume $3.5M, but it’s another thing to overpay a Tuberville or say a Steve Spurrier (not that he’s in the running) who are probably closer to the end of their careers than the beginning.

Here’s a shot in the dark for you; Skip Holtz. We can say, “hey you beat, you can coach us, no?”

Problem right now is there really isn’t anyone out there not under a long-term contract (or who would want to leave their current position) who would make a splash, but also has all the intangibles this program is looking for.

I hope Kirby and his search team are a lot more creative than I am because aside from a Harbaugh, no one else mentioned really gets my juices flowing.

Thanks Grudengate. You caused me to officially lose whatever swagger I was holding onto.

  1. Tuberville gets my juices flowing. The only supposed knock against him is his age, which I see as a non-issue given A) what other coaches have been able to accomplish at his age (e.g. Nick Saban, Mack Brown, Jim Tressel) and B) the fact that he hasn't won an outright national championship as a HC, an indication that he's probably hungry for an opportunity to solidify his legacy.

RE: Leach, I'm not crazy about him, but I'm glad he wants us and consider him our safety. Because Leach clearly wants the job, instead of interviewing half of the coaching world, Hocutt only has interview the relatively fewer candidates who are clearly or arguably better than Leach. In other words, Leach gives us a type of "floor" if you will, meaning that we should't hire anyone worse than Mike Leach. That's a good thing!

Harbaugh is my top choice after Gruden as well. I'm glad you mentioned that backstory for us as it gives us a little more hope that we can land him. It might also explain why he wasn't invited to the UMich 1985 team banquet last week.

    GO CANES!!!

  2. All that matters are wins and losses.

Nobody cares about how the coach handles the media except for the media. Stop projecting your vocational frustrations onto the fan base.

Personally, I hate Leach's circus-act gimmick offense. But if it results in wins, I'll pay to watch it.

    Just win baby.

  3. Mike leach the hc and leavitt as the dc…..now thats sexy and equals a big name and will be just as affective!!!!!! NAW…Cause I would have to be Miami's AD to make that happen!!!!

  4. You people who want leach here have to be kidding me. He is not at all Miami. Corny high school offensive scheme that has nothing to do with preparing kids for the NFL. What has he done but win nothing and cause a ton of drama. I pray to god every night that I don't see him in Miami because simply he isn't the right fit.

  5. Allcanes, do you have any insight or theories as to why Trestman is never a serious candidate for the head coaching position? On the surface, his resume seems good enough to at least warrant an interview. I keep
reading comments from bloggers that imply he's got some kind of problem, personality or otherwise, that makes him a social pariah at the U.

  6. Here's a name for you, JUNE JONES. He has NFL coaching experience and plays a fast and exciting style of offense. Not to mention he has had success with much lesser talent. What do you think?

  7. Edsell nough said!

… wouldn't be disappointed with Edsall, but think some bigger names need to be explored first.

Nobody cares about how the coach handles the media except for the media. Stop projecting your vocational frustrations onto the fan base.

Beast mentions 'media' as part of the overall equation. Leach runs a great offense, but as discussed here in the past when mentioning Randy's pitfalls, a head coach needs to be the CEO and face of the program. He needs to be polished and politician-like. There's more to playing the game than just airing it out.

Mike leach the hc and leavitt as the dc…..now thats sexy and equals a big name and will be just as affective!!!!!! NAW…Cause I would have to be Miami's AD to make that happen!!!!

… the admin has state that no coach with 'baggage' would be hired and you just named the only two coaches in the whole process who HAVE baggage. One accused of locking a kid in a closest, now suing his former university and ESPN as well as another coach who smacked up a kid at halftime.

You have a better chance of painting Jon Gruden orange / green and having him streak campus naked.

Allcanes, do you have any insight or theories as to why Trestman is never a serious candidate for the head coaching position?

No insight other than the obvious, that he must be a bit quirky as his NFL OC resume is solid, but he's never risen to the head coaching ranks either in college or the NFL.

Here's a name for you, JUNE JONES. He has NFL coaching experience and plays a fast and exciting style of offense. Not to mention he has had success with much lesser talent. What do you think?

I think he's a great fit at a smaller school.

I think there's a reason he had success at Hawai'i and
wound up at SMU, not a bigger program.

  8. sigh…….

well i figure i might as well throw my 2 cents in here goes…….brent venables or possibly gus malzahn

  9. Allcanes I know that Edsall is not the sexy name, however after watching his team lastnight I would be very happy to have him as head coach with Jim Levitt as DC! Fingers are crossed…

  10. RE: Leach

One of the other factors that many have been overlooking regarding Leach is the "perception" that hire would bring. Not to the fanbase, not to the media, but most importantly to the possible recruits we would need to bring in the future. The cloud over his head reaches further than the immediate. There have been several recruits that have openly stated they would avoid the U if Leach were here. I suspect that winning cures all, but it is significant in the minds of those in power at the moment. I also suspect that Leach will have to start small and work his way back up (per say). Possibly an assistant job or coordinator position for a few years and work his way back to a head coaching position in the NCAA. His only viable option in avoiding that would be taking a job in the NFL where he doesn't have to worry about image and recruiting.

Regarding his gimmick offense and how that translates into development for NFL success. I have a theory that it's relative to the players themselves and not the actual system. The only one directly effected by a spread offense is a QB. The QB might not develop the proper fundamentals and mechanics to make the immediate transition into the NFL (For example: Tebow, and many others). The other skill positions on offense have no direct effect on development for the NFL. If you can run as a RB, you can do it in any system at any level. If you can run a route and catch the ball as a WR, you can do it in any system at any level..

Randy Shannon is often touted as a great defensive coordinator but lousy head coach.. This may be true, but I'm inclined to believe it not to be the case entirely. I think he was in the position during a time when we had some of the best players to ever play the game. He had guys like Ed Reed who managed themselves and the rest of the defense for him. If he was a great coordinator he would be able to succeed with any amount of talent. I'm not saying he isn't good, I'm saying his previous success isn't a full indicator of his ability. The defense was not consistent week in and week out just as the offense wasn't either.

Leach would add a dynamic to the team and I like the "idea". But at what cost over the interim of losing players for the next 2-3 years until the program gets back to prominence or relativity ?

  11. Whoa … Miami… Coach Leach is not the maker of his persona… his fans and the students of Texas Tech are. thus the 'Pirates', flags, and eye patches!
And, our corrupt political Administration was left to stand 'behind' him in accolades to his program and the love of his fans.
The Dem. turned Rep. politician and lobbyist … could NOT abide that!
Hance, Anders, Turner, Sowell, et al, big-monied political donors in Texas. Craig James, partners in kind, ie, Nuclear waste dump, wind mills, and the concessions at Tech Stadium (the 'House that Leach built'), AND Senatorial candidate for Kay Bailey Hutchingson's seat … his 3rd string 'baby boy -'Nancy James', made up a lie. Just look a what Nancy wore to practice the day he HAD his cell phone in the Spaeth Communications youtube video!
E-mails, depositions, Coach Leach's contract, and Tech's employment policies, plus staff, coaches and players (6 NFLers ) ALL absolve Coach Leach.
Chancellor Hance (former contract law professor at Tech) premeditately, intentionally signed a contract he intended to be in material breach of (e-mails)! Baby James' lies – to daddy at ESPN. Tuberville recruited in 9 days from~~~~ESPN working alone-side his personal friend and buddy, Craig James (The Pony Express Expert)!
All the while the rest of Coach leach's coaches and staff were willing and able to take the team.

Look at the MONEY, National attention, the facilities, the stadium Coach Leach built … handshakes? Maybe not, but standing room only, home games and away – merchandise galore.
You want that in a Coach? you've got it in Coach Leach, (and, would have scores of Texans clogging the airways and highways to Miami following him).

That Texas Tech 'ruined' a good man because "nobody makes Craig James' little boy 3rd string"… and the Administration wants the TV time for their political candidates…….has nothing to do with what an exceptional coach Coach Leach would be for UM.

PR? Huh? Ya'll have Donna Shalala!! Credibility with a PLUS.

Her announcement and support would leave the detractors silent.

You've got the tradition, legacy, students and fans… now all you need are the 'guts'… and the will… to not let a corrupted Administation get away with ruining a good man!

Find the 60 Minutes "youtube video".. of Scott Pelley interviewing Michael Lewis ("BLIND SIDE"-"Moneyball"), about Coach Leach.

Michael Lewis' last sentence is about you, UM!!!

  12. Edsall is 73-69 as head coach! Hire him and we should have kept our Randy! Yes, he coaches a team where talent is hard to come by but they are also playing lesser opponents every week and still losing half the time!

  13. Whatever happens, I hope it happens fast. We just lost another commitment(Marcus Jackson).

  14. Bottom line on Leach is character issues. Same with Leavitt. Sure Miami wants to win,but to their credit they also have standards. The face of your program can't be a guy who locked a player with a concussion in a shed. You should know that, ie not worth the interview.

  15. Iliad read that the defensive coordinator from the eagles wants the job and that ray Lewis and Dan Morgan are calling Kirby. I know wheyou think eagles you think Whipple but Idk. No previous head coaching…..just a thought

  16. You realize that Leach was a college head coach for many years right? You act like he is new to the game and has never dealt with the press before.

Instead of killing Leach, let us know who YOU want to be hired. And get real, no Harbaugh, Peterson, Patterson. Edsell, Tuberville, trestman??

  17. @AllCanes.com

Gruden is a self serving a hole, which is great for himself. It sucks for us, but not in every way.

Originally, I was for a Gruden not so much because he was the best football mind, but because I thought or believed in his DESIRE to coach here – His desire to coach the U.

He not only has no desire to coach here he thinks he can dick around with our AD and get away with it. Our AD got hosed on the national stage. What he did was a big slap in the face if it is true that he reached out first. According to everything I have read and been told in the U-niverse it said as much.

There is never an easy answer. The fact is tough times bring out the tough or drive a away cowards.

So about Gruden, don't let one clown with NFL aspirations take a away your "swag". Only you can do that. BTW, I have a feeling giving the chance he will be housed again in the NFL.

  18. Oh yeah, forgot about Cristobal – he's got the look, the persona, and he just lost.

He's a cane. I know so was Randy which the only objective down I see to that deal.

We will find a coach and we will win. Don't doubt me.

  19. If we strike out on Gruden and Harbaugh we need to get Mike Leach. Leach is the right choice for this program and would be the most exciting hire. For those of you hating on his offense you must not watch college football. Oregon is the most exciting team to watch on TV and they are going to the National Championship game. Leach runs a similar offense, but much better. He is the greatest offensive mind in college football. Is he crazy and wierd? Of course. But its all about W's, and Leach would bring W's while dropping 60 points. If we get Leach and a great DC we would be Oregon with a top 10 defense and back on top of the college football world. Unfortunately, Leach coming to Miami is very unlikely because Craig James is an ass face. Leach will get a job next year at a program that enjoys winning and will have the top ranked offense in the game. EPIC FAIL!

  20. All Canes, how about Mike Shula???

He has HC experience. Got shafted by Alabama, when Alabama was under probation. Nick Saban won the National Championship with his players.

He has NFL experience. Developed Broyde Croyle at Alabama, Current qb coach at Jacksonville, OC with the Bucs under Tony Dungy.

He has local ties. Notwithstanding his dad, He is a Columbus Grad and his nephew went to Aquinas, two great High School programs in the area.

He has the qualities that the U is looking for.

  21. Sun Bowl director: "We never in our wildest dreams in 77 years of bowl business thought we’d have a matchup like that"

O how the mighty have fallen.

Time to pick ourselves up boys and get us a 5-star coach!

    GO CANES!!!

  22. In my opinion, there's Harbaugh and then there's everyone else. What he did at SDU and what he's done at Stanford is nothing short of amazing.

One of my lifelong Hurricane dreams is to have a longstanding, iconic coach (ie Joe Pa; Bobby Bowden). I would be willing to put my dream on the back burner for Harbaugh.

It might be sacrilege, (please don't ban me for saying this :-0 ) but what about Terry Bowden?

  23. I really hope Leach is not the guy here. If he does end up getting the call, the better pay just as much to get a d-coordinator. I don't wanna be losing games 54-49!

  24. The Grudengate was a hoax. The rest of the coaches on the list are not sufficient enough to get us to greatness! Harbaugh and possibly Peterson are those, but Leach and a good DC could get us there ASAP! Give Leach another interview! At least give him his phone call he is waiting for!!!

  25. For the 1 millionth time, wait for it…HIRE TOMMY TUBERVILLE!
NOBODY on this list has a better resume'! Seriously, just do it.
Thanks for letting me vent.Btw, Manny Navarro & Tim Reynolds must be getting tired of me tweeting them this every hour on the hour!

  26. Hey man… Youre out west… I heard Norm Chow maybe available pretty soon. He's had coached Heisman Trophy winners and been on championship winners and contenders. He has been considered for head coaching jobs before and also has NFL experience. The downsides are no head coaching experience at any level and he's old. Regardless, I think he would be a pretty good candidate. Plus he's developed some pretty good QBs. Some with weaker arms than J12. Besides Harbaugh has a job and has built a successful program. As you already stated, there really isnt a lot of motivation for him to come here.
My first choice would still be Leach though. I wish the U would reconsider their position on so-called baggage coach candidates. For 50k, Neinas should at least have an exploratory/investigation committee for research on Leach to find out if those abuse claims really hold water.

  27. I see all of the suggestions, but everyone is forgetting a big factor: someone our big donor$ will get behind. Football pretty much supports all sports at the U (except for baseball, which is self-supporting), so you want to make sure that not only can the new HC raise money, but he will be able to present a good appearance to current and potential new donors/supporters of U Football. Harbough is by far the best candidate, and his players love him, and are willing to play their BEST for them. I have not seen our players putting our their "best" for some time now.

  28. I like Tuberville, but he won't leave Texas Tech to come here. They can pay more than the U and he has a Top 10 recruiting class coming in. I doubt he wants to deal with what it would take to get things turned around here.

Not a fan of Leach, he just reeks of drama and personality conflicts.

Harbough is probably my favorite realistic candidate.

  29. I see that there is one of those "Team Leach" PR hired hands on here posting about the "corrupt" administration at Texas Tech.

The Texas Tech administration did what they needed to do. He had been creating drama at that school for years, and kudos to them for getting rid of him instead of keeping him just because he won games.

Hey PR guy, you point out all the MONEY and attention he brought. That just proves more than anything that Leach was impossible to deal with. If he brought in all that money and attention, there is no way they would have fired him unless they had taken all they could from his weird personality.

If I were them I would have fired him five years earlier.

  30. No jim harbaugh he got a better deal from stanford check out espn.com if u don't believe me.

So that leaves one clear choice and its tommy tubberville. He knows how to win with a strong running game I.e. brown and williams at auburn. He would do great things with this team. He is the logical choice.

I will say I like the throw in of norm chow he has done great things with qbs. But can he run the whole team who knows?

Since we are just throwin names out there how bout charlie weiss? Yes he tanked at nd but the man can recruit and made jimmy clausen a much better qb than he probably should have been.

I still think a dark horse that should be contacted is greg schiano as someone mentioned on another post. He knows the miami way.

  31. Mike leach would be a cancer to the miami program no way should he even be given a phone call

  32. This Harbaugh talk is delusional.

Someone please give me a reason why Harbaugh would come to UM instead of staying put or waiting for an NFL job. And don't say $$$ b/c Stanford is currently trying to give him more.

Stanford is #4 in the BCS and going to the Orange Bowl. Why in God's name would he want to come to a school that is nowhere close to being as good as Stanford? Sorry but this is 2010, not 2000. I'm a Canes fan but am also realistic…the UM HC job doesn't have the same panache that it did years ago.

I hope I'm wrong, but I have a feeling that Holcutt is having (or will have) a much harder time in finding a good candidate for this job, and unfortunately will have to settle for a 3rd or 4th tier guy.

  33. Other then Kirby replacing Paul Dee as AD this is the same administration that has blown the last two coaching hires(Coker & Randy). I keep trying to stay positive but i got feeling they are gonna fail on this hire. I coach high school football in South Florida, The U isn't gonna be able recruit to any of the top Miami players. FSU, U of Louisville, LSU & Ole Miss even Oregon(SMH) are gonna get all from Central, BTW, Jackson etc. If you think im full of bs then look at last years recruiting hull or the fact that we only had seven commits b4 firing Randy. We won championship with the kids from miami but the U has lost its own back. The Truth is the truth.

  34. This has been a calm week-end with a lot of reflection toward our next HC hiring. Have read all your opinions, watched all conferences championships games including including Edsell BigEast game. I got to be honest with myself being a cane fan since the 70's and dreaming about Canes past performances. However something is troubling me, which is which teams have gone to the last five six years national championship games and what type of football they are playing. I have to surmise that lately the type of offense we have called gimmicky is showing up more and more often in national championship games and perhaps is time we become updated or more attune with 2010. I bring up this subject because I believe is particularly relevant to our future HC hire. If indeed the times have changed and we need to be more attune with the times, then I have to revise my original list of HC candidates as it will be imperative not only the W-L records but offensive philosophy and master of the same. Under this scenario, I would have to drop Edsell, Tuberville and Gruden himself. Add Gus Malzahn as the preferred candidate and Dan Mullen as a second choice. Jim Harbough has demonstrated a capacity to achieve a lot with less but I am not sure if he is up to par on this new offensive philosophy. Comments will be appreciated.

  35. Mike leach
    Overall 84–43/ 47-33(big 12 conf)
    Bowls 5–4

    Randy Edsall
    Overall 73–69/ 22-26( big e conf)
    Bowls 3–1

    Tommy Tuberville
    Overall 117–65/ 67-55 ( sec & big 12 conf)
    Bowls 6–3

  36. No jim harbaugh he got a better deal from stanford check out espn.com if u don't believe me.

Regardless if Harbaugh stays at Stanford or not, how can you say it's a "better" deal when you don't know what Miami was willing to offer?

  37. I know this is just throwing out names, but what the hell? I think there are some quality ex NFL coaches out there who should warrant consideration. Since Miami has already went after 1 Super Bowl-winning coach, how about another like Brian Billick? Maybe he's tired of announcing and wants to coach again. There are others currently serving as assistants and might leave for the right college job such as Jim Haslett, Mike Martz. Age may limit their appeal, but I think they may be better than some of the other rumored candidates.

  38. Lets have an ex player weigh in on this. Not giving my name because you probably wouldn't know me anyway. I will tell you this much. I was in Howards first recruiting class and was a 4 year letterman.
Let me bring up this point. Jim Burt, Michael Irvin, Ray Lewis, Warren Sapp. What do these guys all have in common, besides being GREAT players from the U? THEY WE'RE NOT CHOIR BOYS!! Do any of you understand what it takes to play this game? I'm beginning to wonder if anyone down in Coral Gable's knows what it takes to win anymore. Everyone is so afraid that the place MIGHT turn back into Sun Tan U. Sure, we do want the kids to stay out of jail and get their degrees. I will not argue that point. I'm just saying that if you want the Great players and coaches there is certain baggage that comes along with it. I was on probation with the law when I was recruited. Jim Burt was the guy who recruited me. They gave me to Burt because I was just like him. We used to say,"only 2 schools recruited Burt, Miami and Atica state prison". I only had 2 offers and UF pulled their offer from me. Why am I telling you this? Because Jim and I are both good citizens today. Howard Schnellenberger was a very hard coach to play for. He was a Bear Bryant protegee, which means he would push you until you couldn't take it anymore. I'm sure much of what he did to us is illegal to do today. For example, his first spring he pulled a "Junction Boys" on the team. Do you know what that is? Do you think these kids could do that today? This member of 1983 team laughs at what Leach did to the little James Kid. That kid shouldn't be allowed to put on a uniform anymore!!

Bottom line. There were allot of us ex-players and coaches that came from a rough place. The U molded us into the people we are today. I always tell people that the Canes don't sign Thugs, we give people another chance. Maybe Leach should be given another chance. I thank god everyday because Howard gave me another chance. Coral Gables is starting to look more like South Bend.

  39. allcanes let me counter you with this.
how is it not a better deal?

… if taking the administration at face value that 'money is no object', they should be able to throw more at Harbaugh than the current $1.25M he's annually earning — as well as whatever the increase will be.

More money to coach a talented UM team would be a better deal than less money to coach a talented Stanford team (and one that will be without the services of Andrew Luck next season.)

  40. canes83…

well said, have any of the ex-players attempted to approach current UM administration with input on the subject? I know the fans have flooded their email with similar points, just wondering if players have as well.

    anyway, thanks for the input!

  41. Well allcanes word around stanfords campus is the new deal is gonna be worth two to three million a year. That's coming from a friend of mine who is doing grad school there.
I think he would have a better deal based on the fact that he would be allowed win eight games a year at stanford and at UM that's not gonna fly. The media and fan base would eat him alive for doing that.
We have such high expectations at miami that we the fan base freak out on a down year. Whether that is right or wrong is open to everyones opinion. And by down year I will include being two games over five hundred on the season.
I would love to see a big name coach here at miami would have loved to see harbaugh. What this team needs is a hard ass coach who makes kids stand up for what they did that day not shield them away like shannon did.
I totally agree with canes83 up there he made some serious points. This team needs a hard nosed coach and harbaugh is that kind of guy but so is mark richt or tt

  42. Mike leach should never be given a chance at miami.
    Here are the reasons why…….
He runs a gimmic offense that only works in defensive deprived conferences.
Name any skill player other than danny amendola wes welker or crabtree who is starting in the nfl? Then think about all the pro style guys at miami who start which school has more.
He would turn miami into the clown school he turned texas tech into.
He won't run the ball so our stable would go to other schools or to waste.
U run the spread when u have a weak line no running game and a bunch of short receivers. Miami has a strong big line tall receivers and a strong running game.
When thinking about leach being the guy at miami I just wanna puke. I would rather keep whipple as oc than see mike leach anywhere near the hurricane sideline

  43. Allcanes how bout this name
Josh McDaniels fired today by denver excellent offensive mind firey attitude and young. I think that would be a good interview.
    Beast allcanes thoughts?

  44. Now Leach's name is circling for the newly opened Denver Broncos job.

Considering the Bronco's are stuck paying for Shanahan, and now McDaniels contracts, they really don't have the money for a big NFL contract.. The new speculation is now going after a college coach they can pick up for a bargain. Leach was the first name that sprung to mind considering the Bronco owner's love for offensive minded head coaches and that Leach comes cheap and eager to work again..

It would suck for them to sleep on Leach and him wind up finding success in the pro's when they could of had a shot at a long-term keeper with a decent track record of success from both on the field and off the field academics..

… it'd suck even more to give a guy big money and a fat contract because fans are getting desperate one week into the process – only to have the hire blow up in the program's face, setting UM football back even further.

Hate to say it, but there's probably a reason other than Adam James that Leach has spent the past several months in the Keys without his phone ringing.

  46. I said it before, but I love the look of my own text. Mike Leach is terrible. He is a scumbag and offense only coach. Miami is a Defensive school with explosive offenses thrown in for flavor.

Someone said that leach is a cancer and I beilieve that is true.

Screw Trump and any other fool who puts forth Leach.

  47. HEY IDIOT, IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT RETAIL, $7.50 OF A $15 SHIRT IS PRETTY MUCH ALL THE PROFITS. ALLCANES OBVIOUSLY NEEDS TO GET THEIR COST BACK.

YOU'RE REALLY GOING TO GIVE THESE GUYS SHIT? THEY DONATE MONEY EVERY YEAR BACK TO THE PROGRAM, THEY HAVE THE ANNUAL SHOPPING SPREE FOR UNDERPRIVILEGED KIDS, THEY RAISED OVER $10,000 FOR THE PATA FAMILY, GAVE TO THE SEAN TAYLOR FOUNDATION AND A PORTION OF EVERY SALE THROUGH THAT STORE GOES BACK TO UM.

TYPICAL BONEHEADED FAN. YOU PROBABLY DIDN'T EVEN BUY A SHIRT, DON'T HAVE SEASON TICKETS AND NEVER WROTE UM A CHECK IN YOUR LIFE, YET YOUR CHASTISING A LOCAL BUSINESS AND PILLAR OF THE COMMUNITY WHO IS ACTUALLY DOING SOMETHING!

WHAT OTHER BUSINESSES EVEN THINK ABOUT DOING SOMETHING LIKE THIS???

    GTFOH WITH YOUR NONSENSE.
