TB3 putting on some ‘man weight’

The Sun-Sentinel’s Steve Gorten had a piece on senior receiver Travis Benjamin bulking up this off-season – which is welcomed news as No. 3 is expected to step up and replace the departed NFL-bound Leonard Hankerson.

The listed-at-five-foot-ten Benjamin has added six pounds this off-season, with the goal of packing on at least ten. According to last year’s depth chart, Benjamin weighed in around 175 pounds, which would currently have him around 181, with a season-opening target date of 185.

When looking at some Benjamin-sized former Canes and their current NFL weight, the senior is on track with his off-season workouts. Ten-year veteran receiver Santana Moss clocks in at 5-foot-10 and currently weights 209, while younger brother Sinorice Moss is listed at 5-foot-8 and 185 pounds.

Former Canes return man and receiver Roscoe Parrish measures 5-foot-9 and 178 pounds, while the all world Devin Hester is 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds.

Former Florida wideout and returner Percy Harvin has a similar build as TB3 and is listed at 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds.

Benjamin enters the 2011 season coming off a 43-reception, 737-yard, three touchdown junior campaign, though it’s one that will probably be remembered more for mishaps than big plays.

Benjamin was blamed by former coach Randy Shannon for poor route running, miscommunication and not fighting for the ball, all which resulted in interceptions. Benjamin’s biggest ‘off’ day came at Ohio State, where Miami fell, 36-24 and quarterback Jacory Harris tossed four picks.

  • tb3 is nothing more than a slot guy. it would be huge mistake to let him be on the outside. the outside guys should be johson streeter and byrd. Put tb3 and thompkins run the slot routes and used him correctly.
tb3 is responsible for about ten picks last season running wrong routes and not fighting for a single ball.
i hope this new coaching staff uses him correctly this year.

  • dscott - Agree he is a slot guy. Was just making the point that because of his experience and the departure of Hank, TB will get more looks. Byrd and Streeter can step up and take Hank's role, but neither have TB's experience.

Harris / Morris were comfortable with Hank as their go-to option last year and that seems like a role #3 could assume this year.

  • shanecane- i disagree travis benjamin has tha speed to play wherever they need him, alot of those picks that were blamed on him werent his fault he is 5'10 those picks were single handedly the fault of jacory you vant lob the ball every single time you throw it and expect your man to come down with it every time though that would be nice, jacory just has to understand that he wont be lucky enough to hit tha guy wide open every time thats the only way those lobs work or if u have like a 6'6 receiver shannon blammed benjamin cause they were more stacked at receiver than qb and couldnt afford to have jacory get down on himself which didnt matter anyway cause pumped or half concious jacory will throw picks bring on stephen morris, FOR THIS YEAR. cause next year its gonna be tha forcier show.

  • Who's to say he was running the wrong routes?

Seriously. Ya'll know Whipple's playbook? Jacory was notorious for just throwing to a spot that he thought was open with a safety or field corner lurking in zone.

Many of the interceptions that were blamed on Travis Benjamin were jump balls deep down the field into double coverage against BIGGER, TALLER DEFENSIVE BACKS.

How in God's name is that fair? NOT FIGHTING FOR IT? Good GOD. He's TINY compared to most of the safeties they faced this year.

The Ohio State game was ugly for him, but that was about the extent of it.

  • tb3 experience is one thing but at times last year i think we all noticed his randy moss approach to playing at times. We can't have that kind of guy out there and i think putting him in the slot will make him want to actually work and this new coaching staff seems like they will make him work or he wont play. still think its pretty generous to list him at 5' 10" when its pretty clear he is 5'9" at the tallest. most likely shorter but i digress.
Now yes hank was the go to guy and at times it seemed like the qbs were told to force it to him no matter what.
I look for a solid year from these wideouts and i would really like to see big things from johnson and streeter and byrd. All have nfl size and speed but need to show it. I will say this it looked like johnson got thrown in shannons dog house last year and we all know if your in there he won't let you out. your example sam shields. luckly for shields his hard work payed off hopefully johnson will do the same.

  • Anonymous, who's to say Benjamin was running the right routes? No one knows.

But what we do know is that Benjamin got worked by some opposing defensive backs and didn't show much fight for he ball at times last year.

Either way, new season and he's a senior so let's clear the slate and see what happens this fall.

  • How do I know he was running the wrong routes or didn't know the play calls? Hmmmm let me think did you happen to watch the ohio state game. He is supposed to run a slant but goes to run block? Ya in football we call that not running the right route and not knowing the play book. Like I said before randy moss like focus should not be tolerated. Oh and then there was the pitt game when he battled the safety so mightly but not even jumping for the ball.
Yes the kid is gifted fast which is why he should be in the slot running across the field not on the outside where size and being able to shield off dbs with your body is so important.
Oh and you who wants morris over harris. Morris had more picks than touchdowns last year. And forcier will either change schools or change positions before his career is over. Too small to be a qb.
You so called fans hatred toward harris is bull. Just like it was toward berlin and kyle wright.

  • Maybe throwing the jump balls to our 6'6 and 6'4 receivers instead of our 5'10 receiver in the redzone would be a good idea next year? just a thought....

  • Doesn't matter what route the reciever is running when Jacory throws a Waterballoon up to the free safety.

  • Well as a receiver your supposed to find the ball when your at the front of the endzone not just stare at it and say pretty ball. But like I've said on previous blogs can't expect much from bandwagon fans who hide behind the anon name. Common sense is not really your thing.
Ps morris higher pick to td ratio than harris last year. Just pointing that out
