A special thanks to everyone who came out for the allCanes / Rakontur “The U” DVD release on Monday night. Epic time with some old school Canes, new school friends and a great way to spend a Monday night in August, weeks before the season opener.
Below is a piece from Steve Gorten at the Sun-Sentinel. Steve made it out to the launch party on Monday night and covered the event. A Gator now in Cane country, it’s nice to see that the new UM beat writer and blogger at least ‘gets’ that it’s a Canes thing.

“Recap of ‘The U’ DVD Party”

CORAL GABLES — I didn’t get a chance to write about this earlier, but I went out to “The U” DVD release party last night at the Titanic Brewery on the edge of the UM campus and it was worth going. The DVDs started to be sold around 11:30 and the party went on until at least 12:45 a.m. when I left.
For those of you who weren’t there to see, the place was packed and several former players were there to sign autographs and pose for pictures while “The U” documentary was shown continuously on the TV screens.
As usual, Lamar Thomas — sporting a thick, full beard these days — was the life of the party. Brett Perriman was there, too, along with Tolbert Bain, Mike Rumph, Don Soldinger and others. I even saw an old-school “Catholics vs. Convicts” T-shirt on some guy.
As for the DVD, Perriman told me you have to watch the one-hour of material that didn’t make the cut for the ESPN special but is included on the DVD. Lots of good stuff, he promised. I haven’t seen it yet, but will have to check it out.
All of the former players in attendance have high expectations for the 2010 Hurricanes. Would you expect otherwise? This program has thrived over the years in large part because of the enormous confidence.
At one point, when Bain was doing a radio interview with ”The Beast” Brian London, he was asked about the tough early schedule the Hurricanes face.
“And?” Bain responded emphatically.
So there you go. No excuses.
Speaking of The Beast, I’m not one to plug people, but I do recommend checking out his weekly show, allCanes Radio, at allCanes.com. I listened in on some of his interviews last night – they’re up on the website now – and they were entertaining, especially when Thomas and Perriman ganged up and playfully hated on The Playmaker.
Anyhow, the Beast’s show is recorded live on Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., usually at Smoke’t Southern Kitchen. Tommorrow, it will originate from Miller’s Ale House in Boca Raton.
Not sure if this was touched on already, but does anyone know what happened to Shandel Richardson who used to do the UM beat for the paper?
Shandel was moved to a different beat. Not sure the politics behind it, but Gorten took over.
Gorten wrote for the Independent Florida Alligator back in the day (when I too was a student there) and while he's no Cane fan (neither was Shandel), he does his due diligence and is attacking the project like he should. I've been impressed with everything he's written about UM thus far.
No disrespect to Shandel, but seems Steve is taking the assignment a bit more seriously.

Dude…where can I get the Uncle Luke "U" t-shirt that Lamar Thomas was wearing? Hook a Cane up? That would be a best seller if AllCanes got their hands on it!
Will, we couldn't sell that shirt in a million years for a million different reasons.
That is some sort of a bootlegged shirt as neither UM or the CLC (Collegiate Licensing Company) would ever green light that.
Same with the U-logo gun shirt that Billy Corben has been seen wearing, that many have asked about.
We are closely affiliated with the University of Miami and have to adhere to their guidelines as an official retailer and vendor. Every original design we create goes through a tedious process regarding earning approval and being produced.
