Former Hurricanes’ pitcher Luke DeBold lost his battle with cancer today. He would’ve turned thirty this coming June and is survived by his father Tom, mother Kay and sister Dawn.
Luke was diagnosed with a primary mediastinal nonseminomatous germ cell tumor with metastases in the lungs in March 2008 and has endured several bouts of chemotherapy along the way.
There isn’t much online about this story. I read about it via J.C. Ridley, UM photographer, as he mentioned it on Facebook. I’ve since emailed J.C. to see if he can provide more information for the blog. We will post when we hear back.
Another one of those senseless life tragedies that can’t be explained. Our condolences to the DeBold family and our prayers to all of those who knew and loved Luke.

I lost my father to cancer a year ago this month, hard to see another member of the Hurricane family move on so young….

Throughout my time at UM I had the pleasure to work with Luke in small groups in our info systems classes. Luke was a smart hard working Stan up guy. As someone who's also battled cancer the last couple years, my heart goes out to Luke's loved ones. You will be in my thoughts and prayers!
