Miami v. Nebraska – rivalry renewed

The Miami Hurricanes and Nebraska Cornhuskers have officially inked a deal for a home-and-home series, taking place in 2014 and 2015.

The teams last met in the regular season in 1976, but have been bowl foes five times between 1983 and 1991. The Canes won three national championships, beating the Huskers in the postseason in 1983, 1991 and 2001.

Nebraska beat Miami in the 1995 Orange Bowl for their first title since 1971.

The Canes will travel to Huskerland on September 20th, 2014 with a return trip to Dolphin Stadium on September 12th 2015.

Kudos to University of Miami athletic director Kirby Hocutt for inking this deal. Upon taking the job, Hocutt talked about high profile out of conference games being a priority, as always at The U.

Miami/Nebraska is just another big-time, high profile, out of conference match up for the Canes. Some others that will take place in the coming years:

Miami/Oklahoma – 2009 (return game from 2007)
Miami/Ohio State – 2010 & 2011
Miami/South Florida – 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 & 2013
Miami/Central Florida – 2008 & 2009
Miami/Kansas State – 2011 & 2012
Miami/Cincinnati – 2012
Miami/Florida – 2013 (return game from 2008)

Hocutt has also thrown it out there that Miami would like to schedule a home-and-home with Notre Dame, but nothing from the Irish on that one yet.

  1. Hey Allcanes!

I have a question for you. Do you feel as though Miami is getting slightly snubbed by the polls this season?

Each week, I check back and Miami isn’t getting a single vote to get into the top 25. After the Charleston Southern game, we got ONE vote but that quickly went away after the UF loss.

I understand we’re not a top 25 team yet but come on… not a single vote!

    Here’s my frustration:

    1) Wake Forest is ranked at No. 18. While I’m glad to see an ACC team ranked, I have to wonder how UM doesn’t get any votes when you compare what WF has done this season thus far. This season, they are 2-0. They have a win against Baylor (are they good?? I honestly don’t know?) and they beat Mississippi (a middle-tier, unranked SEC team) by 3 points. Are they ranked this high because they went 9-4 last season? So, beating two “eh” teams put you at No. 18 while manhandling a nobody and losing to a possible national championship contender gets you nothing? Does that seem right?

    2) Fresno State has the same record as Miami. They beat Rutgers (a team that got beat 44-12 by an unranked ACC team – North Carolina). They lost 13-10 to No. 10 Wisconsion. Granted, they lost by 3 points to a No. 10 ranked opponent. Still, we lost by 23 points to No. 4 Florida (a MUCH stronger opponent than Wisconsin, IMO). So, Fresno gets ranked No. 25 and we still don’t get one vote?

    3) Kansas. They are ranked No. 11. They are 2-1 with a 40-10 win over FIU (come on now) and a 29-0 win Louisiana Tech (are they any good?). They lost 37-34 to No. 10 USF. In my opinion, they won against 2 nobodies and they lost by 3 points to a No. 19 team. We beat a nobody as well and lost to a No. 4 team. Kansas is ranked No. 11 and we still don’t get a vote??

    4) Perhaps the most frustrating one for me is FSU. FSU went 7-6 last season. Not much better than Miami. This season they are 2-0. They blew out two big-time nobodies… Western Carolina and Chattanooga. Granted, they are 2-0 and we’re 1-1. But the AP Poll has them at No. 24 (not even No. 25!) Do they deserve this ranking when we don’t geta single vote?! Have they proved themselves so much more than we have?

It just seems to me that the AP poll is being extremely generous to some teams while snubbing others. Some rankings leave me scratching my head thinking “how in the world are they ranked?” or “how in the world are they ranked so high?” Even teams like Ball State, Tulsa, Notre Dame, Iowa, UCF!, South Carolina, etc. are getting votes. Is it me or is there some Miami snubbing going on here?

Please don’t misunderstand my motive in writing this post..

I’M NOT SAYING MIAMI SHOULD BE RANKED JUST YET!

But I do think we’re deserving of at least ONE vote.

I’d really like your opinion on this. Perhaps you’ll have insight that I haven’t thought about or you’ll see something I don’t. I know you know much more about College football than I do so… what do you think?

PS: Sorry that this comment is off-topic… I didn’t know where else to post it?

  2. Great, bring it on!! But note to Shannon, we need to drafting some BIG O-line players from now for those future Big10/12 games.

  3. As a fan, it’s great to see Miami play big time teams. Nowadays a lot of teams get by playing too many cupcakes (FSU) and not enough substance. In the era of big time sports, athletic budgets and the like, I understand that teams have to make a certain amount of money. But the fans deserve more than a directional school for out-of- conference games. It’s a delicate balance I know.
But anyway….it’s nice to see the schedule ahead of time. Too bad Florida is scared to play us yearly. If Notre Shame won’t play us a home and home, then f*ck ’em. We don’t need them. Their new demand is to play all these neutral games and not have to give a payback game. Do like Rutgers and say take it or leave it. I personally think all teams should stop scheduling them until they join a conference like everyone else. They’re not special and we need to stop giving them special exceptions. Hopefully we’ll see more of these types of games. It’d be nice to add a USC or Georgia as well.
    We’re on our way back!!!!
