More talk on this story as the day progresses, but the decision has been made and Miami has decided the long-term gain outweighs the short-term benefit of playing in an ACC Championship game and potentially reaching the BCS.
The university said interim athletic director Blake James informed the team of the decision Monday morning. UM president Donna Shalala and the school’s legal counsel were also involved in the decision.
“Considerable deliberation and discussion based on the status of the NCAA inquiry went into the decision-making process and, while acknowledging the impact that the decision will have on current student-athletes, coaches, alumni and fans, a determination was made that voluntarily withholding the football team from a second postseason was not only a prudent step for the University to take but will also allow for the football program and University to move forward in the most expedited manner possible,” said the university’s statement.

This was the right, yet difficult decision to make. I like the fact that they highlighted the 'unprecidented decision' part because that is exactly what it is. No other school has self imposed like we have between the two bowl bans and player suspensions. That has to be worth something. I think the only left will be some sort of scholarship reductions for a couple of years at most (I hope). Nothing else to do except wait. Let's move forward and get through this. The NCAA needs to hurry up. The waiting is a form of penalty as well in my opinion, because it hurts the whole program being in limbo.

Shame that some fans see rebuilding as a 'waste' of a season. Takes more than two years to clean up ten years of bad coaching. Thankfully our kids and coaches are more committed than some fans are.
If this is , in fact true, I believe it is the right decision. Taking a short term hit in hopes that the NCAA will factor our compliance and cooperation into their ultimate punishment should hold us in good stead down the line.

Given that we had a chance at the ACC title and from there a BCS game this ban really hurts. The kids on this team that have been with Golden since the beginning deserve to play in these games. They are paying the price for other peoples mistakes. Barring massive penalties from the NCAA the U will be poised for a title run in 2014. Go Canes.

I don't know where else to contact you about this so that's why I'm asking you here. I am doing a public relations campaign for a class and I chose to do a family fun event kinda like Canesfest( i think that's what its called) where I get the players to interact with the fans in various ways. What I am asking you is, hypothetically, if i wanted the Beast to talk about this event, how much would it cost to request him to talk about? I hope I make sense and I hope you can help me as well.
P.S sucks we are going on the bowl ban but it probably is best for the university. I hope we go out high this time by beating Duke!
I wonder if this means that the administration and school lawyers feel that the sanctions were going to be tougher than they originally thought. My father and I were discussing this last night. UM has been lauded by the NCAA for its cooperation with the investigation, compared to how USC, Ohio State and UNC handled theirs. I'm wondering if this is an attempt to pressure the NCAA into showing the benefits of cooperation. At this point, if the NCAA comes down hard on UM, after it has self-imposed a bowl bad 2 years in a row, then what incentive do future programs have to cooperate? Might as well stone wall, cover up or try and beat the rap in some fashion because you have nothing to gain. After all, it is not like USC or Ohio State seem to be suffering too much (relatively speaking).
