Randy Shannon Named Miami Hurricanes Coach

allCanes.com and allCanesBlog.com extend a hearty congrats to our new, old school head coach, Randy Shannon.

Shannon was officially named Miami’s head coach late last night/early this morning, depending who you ask. Either way, The U has their guy and make no mistake, Randy really is “their guy.” Former linebacker, long-time assistant coach, top notch recruiter and now, head coach.

I have a lot of thoughts on this hire, the hiring process, the use of the consultant and the other coaches who were passed over but I’ll break that down over the weekend. Today is a day to celebrate a long-time Cane finally landing his dream job. It’s not a day to pick about Miami and how they conducted the search for a new leader. There’s time for that next week.

Between the Miami Herald, Sun Sentinel, ESPN and a slew of other sites, there’s a ton of news on the Shannon hire. Get your fill there and we’ll break this down in a few days when things settle in and we can reflect.

For now, it’s a Randy Shannon thing.

Congrats, coach.

  1. I heard on the radio and ESPN that the Canes are deciding to hire Jeff Bowden! It will be a great fit with Shannon! Go Canes!

  2. I love this hire. Shannon is the man. Look at our defense, it’s always one of the best in the nation, now we just need to get the offense on the same page. Go out and get us a great offensive coordinator coach Shannon. While you are doing that go recruit some wide receivers that can catch the ball and we need to lock up some running backs also. I think we will be playing for a national championship in 2 years. Next year is not a rebuilding, it should be a change in the right direction. year 2 we should be back in the BCS or a playoff, i hope. GO CANES!

  3. I agree. Cane fans should be happy they have someone who understands the real meaning of ” It’s a cane Thing “. A tough, but fair real football guy who knows his way around the program and what it takes to win.

  4. congrats to Shannon and to the U. I’ll admit, when it was announced I wasn’t jumping for joy, but once I watched his press conference, I got excited.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard Shannon talk before today, and what he had to say was good.

now for the hiring of the OC. First of all, I’m glad Dee already established that Rich Olsen is not coming back. More than Coker, Rich Olsen frustrated me the most last season. His offense is boring…and predictable. There was nothing explosive about it…it was run, run, pass, punt.
I hope Shannon goes out and gets an awesome coordinator. Maybe Shula’s interested?

  5. Yo “305”, I feel your frustration. It seems as if we wasted money on resources–the services of Neinas, etc.–and time (2 and half weeks) to make a simple hire. but I dont think you should look at it at that.

First, the administration had a difficult duty this year, given the short supply of big name coaches. All season everyone had been cheering for Schiano, and so Dee and Shalala placated the masses by going after Schiano. He turned us down and we went on. The decision that they were faced with was how to replace a coach of high principle (Larry Coker) while still placating the winning spirit of the UM masses. Trust me, the University of Miami has turned a corner with this hire because it shows how we were able to reconcile these seemingly contrasting goals. From this point on, no longer will we be known as a school who just wants to win “at all costs”. Now, we are going after respect and prestige. I think this hire will transform the way outsiders (specifically the media) views UMiami and should help transform our fair weather fan base into a Family of high spirit and committment to thie football team! Nothing but good can come.

Secondly, I guess the general theme of this off season is hometown loyalty. Out of all the candidates considered, most of them decided to stay at home (Rutgers coach Schiano, West Virginia’s Rodriguez and Shannon). With the anomoly of BC’s O’Brien (I still dont understand that move!), our seemingly “safe hire” may be the best as judged from other successful programs this year.

However, I would love to start talking about the recruiting class for next year. That seems to be on everyone’s mind, outside of who will be hired at offensive coordinator.

    GO Canes!

  6. It pains me to say that the former great football program died earlier this morning. When is formally anounced that they decided to hire randy shannon as their new head coach. It is over the U is done. I say this today with a sad heart that my soon to be alma mater is killing its bread and butter. Thanx title 9 for making womens sports what they are today (still a fucking joke)!!! That is why the U didnt hav enough money to get a big name and now we are a laughing stock anyways, This programs demise will be survived (benefitted) by 2 schools with absolutely NO FUCKING HISTORY and a whinny little cunt for a head coach (Meyer) and a old alzhimer patient (Bowden) they will be recieving all of the inheritance: all of the south florida recruits that would have been proud to call themselves hurricanes. But now all is lost.

  7. Look I’m really happy for Randy but come on are any Cane fans blown away by the Hire?? I’m so frustrated with this that Ican”t see straight. Hey I know everyone likes Randy and so so I but the fact of the matter is he has zero head coaching experience and this program is at a delicate place in it’s history. On top of that my question is this why did we hire a defensive minded coach when our biggest problem is offense?? I hope I’m wrong but to me it looks like the rough days at the U could continue…Caneiac

  8. I have to say after watching the press conference today that I’m very impressed with what I see and I get it now Randy Shannon is the U,he is miami and I’m proud to have him as my new coach!! Now we need a great offensive coordinator to seal the deal.
