Miami / FIU To Renew Football Series

Miami and FIU signed up for a rematch today. It’ll take place October 6th, 2007 in the Orange Bowl and it’s a lame call by the top brass on both sides. Especially Miami.

What does The U have to gain here? Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Zip. These two programs should never play again, in my opinion.

Why let little man FIU and their players who suffer from “Cane envy” into our house for another game? No good comes out of that. They got their asses kicked 35-0 on the field last year and physically got smacked up as well, after instigating the brawl.

Since the fight, they poached Pete Garcia from Miami and made him their AD and they’re now actively pursuing Mario Cristobal, in an effort to bring him “across the ocean”.

Toss in growing rumors that FIU players might’ve had something to do with the shooting death of former Miami defensive lineman Bryan Pata and there’s one more reason these two schools should never again meet.

Screw FI-who. Let them go build their own legacy by playing other national powers and trying to make a name for themselves. Why is Miami letting a bunch of kids not good enough to play for The U have another crack at the Canes after this season’s debacle?

I understand the mindset of suiting up and giving it another go in an effort to prove these two teams can play a peaceful game of football, but the downside is too much. Look at the media this week and all articles surrounding this proposed match up.

Images and video of the two month old brawl are being shown online and on TV as if it just happened yesterday. Playing this game again just invites the media to show this crap on a constant loop come October and game week. Randy Shannon and his new staff don’t deserve that.

This is a stupid call for these two teams to tussle again next year. Nothing good will come out of this. I’d rather see Miami play the likes of Florida Atlantic if they want to build another intercity rivalry. FIU had their shot and blew it.

Get lost Ned and the Golden Panthers.

  1. I agree 100% Chris…Why are we playing this game? It makes no sense! I can picture it now, all the media coverage, especially espn come game week. All there going to do is show the fight again, over and over. I tell you what it better be a noon kickoff.

  2. Come on Miami – what are you afraid of – AN UPSET? Actually, it would not be much of an upset – you should have lost to Duke! Oh I forgot – FAMU and some of the other weak teams you schedule are really great! UM should not be picky on who they play, you are not a top rated team – not even middle of the road, you are the bottom of the barrell guys with fans that barely show up to games! You should be embarrased – there are more visiting team fans than your own – really great! With the way UM runs their program and the fact you are a joke and second rate program, you have no reason to choose teams to play unless you are afraid to lose which is obviously the case! FIU will surpass UM within 5 years! Come on Canes fans, be realistic if it is possible – you are a second rate program with aweful fans who are “band wagon”!

  3. Come on Miami – what are you afraid of – AN UPSET?

No. I’m afraid your thug team will start s**t with our kids again and get half our starters suspended.

Actually, it would not be much of an upset – you should have lost to Duke!

… again, we were missing 14 starters thanks the the brawl against a pointless opponent.

UM should not be picky on who they play, you are not a top rated team – not even middle of the road, you are the bottom of the barrell guys with fans that barely show up to games!

If a program with five titles the past 25 years and puts more talent in the NFL than any other is that bad, what the hell does that make FIU? Please. Stop.

You should be embarrased – there are more visiting team fans than your own – really great!

What are you, a Gator? You want to play the attendance card? Cute.

With the way UM runs their program and the fact you are a joke and second rate program

… then why did you just poach Pete Garcia and why are you looking to lure Mario Cristobal from a “second rate” program?

…you have no reason to choose teams to play unless you are afraid to lose which is obviously the case!

… yeah, I’m scared we’ll only beat you 31-0 this year instead of 35-0.

FIU will surpass UM within 5 years!

Everyone said we’d be the fourth best in the state after going 5-6 in 1997. A few years later Miami won a title and went on a 34-game win streak.

    FIU won’t surpass FAU.

Come on Canes fans, be realistic if it is possible – you are a second rate program with aweful fans who are “band wagon”!

Again, if Miami is “second rate” what the hell is FI-who?

By the way Johnny Scholar, it’s “awful” and “bandwagon”. If you’re gonna insult us, at least use spell check.

  4. Yeah Bozo,,,, we are second rate and you don’t even have the balls to post a name.

  5. In response:

1/ Come on guys – stop living in
    the past! Your program has
done nothing but go down in
    several years and will continue
    until it is officially dead
2/ No excuses – you almost lost to
Duke! If you were that good and
deep in players and the program
you brag to be with all of these
NFL players years ago – you
    should have won easily! The
    truth is hard to swallow!
3/ Most of FIU’s players are
recruited by the U and would
make the team if there were more
    scholarships! You guys lose
    recruiting every year to UF,
    FSU, every other team that
is above UM and oh yeah –
    PRISON!
4/ Your program is a joke which is
    why Pete Garcia and Cristobal
will leave! There is no loyalty
at UM and they want to go to a
place that has a future! Come
    on – be realistic!
    5/ It is college football-
    attendance is a huge issue!
Your fans barely come out when
you are winning – what kind of
program is that! It should be
    embarrassing to have a national
game on TV with half the staduim
empty – come on! Your fans are
    aweful!
6/ Actually you will be a fifth
rate team in the future! That
is why no coach wanted to go
    there because they knew that
they would be boarding a sinking
ship! So afer all the talk, the
    “headhunter” and everything –
you had to resort to hiring your
    own assistant coach! No coach
wanted it period – no matter
    how much money!

Have a great year Canes and I hoep the death is easy!

  6. FSU – 80,000 Fans Win or Lose
Tennessee – 100,000+ fans win or lose
Florida – 80,000 fans win or lose
Alabama – 90,000 fans win or lose
Georgia – 80,000 fans win or lose
Miami – 70,000 fans (if FSU is in town) otherwise 10,000 (max)

Come on and don’t give me the excuse of the beaches, etc.. Fans are fans (if they are “real”) and there is only 5 or 6 home games a season – get it together guys if you want to be on top!

  7. Get lost FIwho scumbags. YOu’re NOTHING to us. A blip on the radar. Another throwaway game that we get nothing out of outside of practice and a scrimmage. Take your little dick syndrome back to 8th street. We don’t need u round these parts. F U!!!!!

It’s a Canes Thing, baby. You have nothing on us. Take Pete. Take Mario. Take whoever. You still have to win five titles and DO SOMETHING to get recognition outside of starting a brawl with us in our own house. You’re nothing. You’re a bunch of roaches.

Miami is going nowhere but UP with Randy Shannon. Larry Choker was the problem all these years. Last year he can only land two receivers and Randy’s staff already nailed down FIVE before Chrismas!! You morons don’t even have a new f–king coach yet!! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!! Even if you get Mario, he’s not saving the day this year at this late hour.

SCRAM FIWHO SCUMBAGS!!!! YOU MEAN NOTHING TO US!!!!

  8. Smart Comment “Durrty Willy”! Your run down stadium is off 8th street! Way to go!!! You must have graduated from UM – oh I forgot – 95% of the UM fans did not even go there much less graduated!

  9. Smart Comment “Durrty Willy”! Your run down stadium is off 8th street! Way to go!!! You must have graduated from UM – oh I forgot – 95% of the UM fans did not even go there much less graduated!

At least “Durty Willy” posted his name. More than I can say for you FIU loudmouths who all go by “Anonymous.”

Wow. Great. 95% of UM fans didn’t do to UM. So what? Do you have to live in a city to be a fan of their MLB, NBA or NFL team? No.

You don’t have to GO to the University of Miami to be a fan. It’s a private school with 10,000 undergrads and a hefty price tag.

Don’t pull that “holier than thou” crap around here. I guarantee you a MAJORITY of the local kids at FIU wanted to come to The U and either 1) didn’t have the money or 2) didn’t have the grades.

Miami is a big city and a big sports town full of a lot of transplants and people from all over who adopt the University of Miami as their sports program of choice.

Don’t be bitter that you pull for the red-headed step child program in the same city as the Canes.

Willy is right. Y’all suffer from Cane envy. Get lost.

  10. My guess is there were three main reasons to leave the FIU game in place.

    1) Finding another opponent at this late date would have likely meant playing a 1AA team. Most schedules are already long filled out by now.

    2) Games against in-state rivals draw a better attendance than other games so the revenue for an FIU will be higher and therefore generate good revenue for the program.

    3) If all goes well they will be able to use the national spotlight to show that the fight was just a fluke, everything is under control and a new order has been restored under Shannon.

Other than that everything seems to say drop them from the schedule.

  11. I’m no fan of the canes but I think this is the right decision for everyone involved.

    1. Cancelling games that have already been scheduled because of the fight sends a signal that neither school is certain that it can control its players.

    2. The FIU game was the Canes home game with the second highest attendance.

    3. There are a lot of UM fans that are FIU grads. This is a game that the students, alums and fans of both schools deserve to see moving forward.

    4. FIU is no great shakes now but they might be a good team in the future. This could eventually become a real rivalry like USC and UCLA.

    5. I believe UM plays FIU in Basketball and baseball, why have an exception for Football?

  12. People forget that FIU was already a replacement for Mizzou who dropped us late from the schedule. I believe it was in early 2005 when they said the home and home scheduled for 2006 and 2007 would not take place, so thus we had to fill that spot quickly. With the NCAA adding a 12th game which was to be FAMU in 2006, Oklahoma in 2007 and Florida in 2008, we didn’t have the luxury of sitting around and waiting for a game to pop up. FIU and FAU were likely the only two viable options. Again, this year if we dropped FIU we’d be in the same boat. Better to just play the game and end the series after next year.

  13. I believe UM plays FIU in Basketball and baseball, why have an exception for Football?

We have played them inconsistently in Basketball. We played them in 1991 and 1992 and then not again until Leonard was gone. Hamilton rightly felt we got no advantage at the time from playing in-state opponents. (that’s why UF and FSU were off the schedule during that time also.) We played in the Big East which was a monster league in Basketball and Hamilton wanted to use our non league games to hit recruiting hot beds or to get on national TV. Thus we played Kentucky a few times, and North Carolina as well as Memphis, but didn’t play FAU, FIU, UF or FSU again until Perry Clark took over.
