Boston College entered this three-game home stand 6-34 overall and 0-20 in ACC play. They’re now 8-35 overall and 2-21 in conference.
Miami came into the weekend looking for as close to a gimmie road sweep as the ACC is going to offer this season and was sent home losing two-of-three. UM is now 29-18 overall and 11-13 in conference play.
The Eagles rode an eleven-game losing streak into Friday’s match-up against the Canes, yet found a way to pick up their first conference win of the year. Miami left eight on base in the 1-0 loss, only getting three hits on the day to Boston College’s four. The Eagles picked up their lone run in the bottom of the third, scoring on a throwing error .
Miami did what was expected game two, getting the convincing 5-0 win. Bryan Radziewski threw a four-hitter for the Canes, giving up four hits and striking out eight while Miami racked up twelve hits in the series-tying win.
UM got on the board in the top of the second courtesy of singles from Alex San Juan and Chris Barr, driven home by Dale Carey, who doubled to left after Brandon Lopez advanced both runners with a ground-out. Tyler Palmer later stole home, on the heels of taking second after singling to right.
Alex Hernandez doubled in the fourth, driving in Lopez and the Canes got their final run in the sixth when Barr scored courtesy of a Carey sacrifice.
Even in the convincing win, Miami stranded nine runners on base – a common theme this season.
Sunday’s rubber match wound up going to the Eagles in dramatic fashion. Miami held a 2-0 lead after seven, but Boston College tied things up getting two in the bottom of the eighth.
The Canes left a runner on base in four of the final five innings and the Eagles made Miami pay in the eleventh.
After UM’s first two batters field out, Mack singled through the left side and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Brad Feiger had a shot to make something happen with a runner in scoring position, but also flied out. BC then drew a walk, hit into a double play and with two down, catch Matt Pare launched a walk-off solo shot off AJ Salcines to end the game.
Miami had four hits to Boston College’s seven in the loss and the Eagles got the win, despite a whopping six errors in the contest.
Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. It seems to be the Hurricanes’ way these days.
Miami welcomes St. John’s next weekend, hits the road for three at Wake Forest the following week and closes the regular season with a home-stand against Georgia Tech.
Nine games remain for a team that has zero margin for error with the post-season on the line and based on this past weekend, the Canes will be lucky if they can play .500 ball between now and mid-May.
An absolutely pathetic showing this weekend. No other way to put it. The ACC cellar-dweller just took the series against a Miami team that needed the sweep. Embarrassing.
