Jack McClinton named to All-ACC First Team

Not too many bright spots after an 18-11 season (7-9 in ACC) for the Miami Hurricanes, though one light continues shining bright — Jack McClinton

The UM guard was named to the All-ACC First Team for the second straight season. McClinton and North Carolina’s Tyler Hansbrough were the only repeat selections from last year’s squad. McClinton was the league’s third-leading scorer with 19.7 points per game and led the ACC in three-point field goal percentage (.464).

A disappointing season for Miami, the Canes are a longshot for an NCAA berth. Next up, a Thursday showdown with Virginia Tech in the opening round of the ACC Tournament in Atlanta. The Canes are 0-1 against the Hokies this season, losing 88-83 late January at home.

Should ninth-seeded Miami get the win, next up is a Friday meeting with North Carolina in the Quarterfinals. The Canes at least need to get out of the first round to even have a shot at the postseason (NIT excluded).

Even with that, the postseason most likely went out the window with a March 4th loss to ACC bottom dweller Georgia Tech. Miami went 4-7 down the stretch after opening the season 14-4.

Thats just plain nuts. Almost .500 from 3 pt land. It seemed like Jack could not miss from beyond the arc. He’ll be missed for sure.

  2. THIS IS A COACHING ISSUE…THE BETTER GET RID OF HAITH…HE HAD PLENTY OF TALENT TO GET IT DONE THIS YEAR…LOST A LOT OF CLOSE GAMES BY GETTING OUT COACHED DOWN THE STRETCH…HE IS NOW LOSING HIS BEST PLAYER AND BEST SCORER…WHO IS HE GOING TO REPLACE HIM WITH..A FRESHMAN FROM NYC..THAT KID WILL TAKE TWO YEARS TO DEVELOP…HE WILL HAVE HIS HANDS FULL NEXT YEAR..HE CANNOT RIDE JACK ANYMORE…JACK WONT BE THERE…WHAT YOU GONNA DO COACH?..HOPEFULLY THEY WILL GET RID OF YOU AND REPLACE YOU WITH SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS TALENT…AND TIME OUTS…AND SITUATIONAL BASKETBALL…UNDERSTANDS X’S AND O’S WHO CAN WIN WITH LESS…FUNNY YOU ARE MEETING A COACH LIKE THAT IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE ACC…AND HE WILL MOST LIKELY OWN YOU AGAIN…YOU NEEDED TO GET OFF YOUR KNEES AND DUKE…BECAUSE YOU BLEW THAT GAME FOR US…JACK GOOD LUCK TO YOU …YOU ARE A HELL OF A PLAYER…AND IT IS TIME TO GET PAID…HOPEFULLY YOU CAN GET THE COACHING YOU NEED AND DESERVE NOW AND HAVE A NICE NBA CAREER

  3. Anonymous, I haven’t watched enough games to know how much of this to blame on Frank Haith versus how much to blame on the lack of another point guard, i.e. Eddie Rios, who got his ass kicked off the team and was a huge loss.

From the games I watched this year, Jack McClinton was a one-man show most of the time. He got little support from the rest of the guys and when he was on the bench in foul trouble, you saw a serious scoring drought. Rios really could’ve helped out, but instead cost this team several games this year.

With another point guard, a 22-7 or 21-8 record was doable… and if that’s the case, are we questioning Haith right now?

  4. These guys seemed to rely too much on last year’s succes or something. Aside from Jack, the guys don’t loko like they put in the offseason work like they needed. They never seemed to close out teams like they should have. Take the loss to VTech for example. They had several leads late in the game and let Tech come back time after time. 3 losses in OT. Several close losses in regulation. NIT.

Hey Superfan, I live on the west coast and I’ve watched about a dozen games this year. All the ESPN / ESPN 2 / and ESPN U games, as well as the few that were on PPV. I don’t get ESPN360, so I haven’t been able to stream online.

95% of what I cover is football. Baseball and basketball are tough to report on from 3,000 miles away.

But hey, thanks for your incredible insight, “Anonymous”.

By they way, it’s “you’re” not “your”… yet I’m the joke?

  7. HA HA! WAY TO PUT THE SUPERFAN IN CHECK, CANES. YEAH, I’M SURE THIS GUY WAS FRONT AND CENTER AT EVERY HOME GAME AND TRAVELLED WITH THE TEAM ON THE ROAD ALL YEAR. PUH-LEEZE. I GO TO MY SHARE OF HOME GAMES AND THERE ARE ONLY A FEW THOUSAND PEOPLE THERE AT BEST. THERE ARE A HANDFUL OF SUPERFANS FOR MIAMI HOOPS. IT’S FOOTBALL FIRST, THEN BASEBALL AND THEN BASKETBALL. THE FACT THAT CANES IS WATCHING GAMES FROM CALIFORNIA AND REPORTING ON THEM HERE, SHEESH, THAT’S MORE THAN MOST FANS WHO LIVE IN CORAL GABLES EVEN DO!!!!

  8. 305,

Let me take this one: I live in ACC country (Virginia) and I get to watch alot of the Raycom games! The issue with Miami is that:
#1- They take wayyyyy to many 3 point shots! They put up at least one 3 point shot in 75% of the possessions.

#2- Personnel- Other than Jack McClinton there is no one that consistently plays well. Lance Hurdle has flashes of greatness, but gets carried away and does stupid stuff (ala JR Smith of the Denver Nuggets)! Jimmy Graham is a beast on the glass, but couldn’t hit the Grand Canyon with a tennis ball. Other than that, it’s a bunch of random, mediocre players (Brian Asbury, Eddie Rios, Cyrus Mcgowan etc….).

#3- Wrong system for personnel. Picture the San Antonio Spurs trying to run and gun like the Phoenix Suns (before this year that is!!). We are a 60 ppg team trying to score 100!!

#4- Hot and cold. Miami either embarrases you or embarrases themselves, there is no in between!!

  9. Clearly this season did not go the way we wanted. Besides Jack, we had untimely injuries, inconsistency, and critical late game breakdowns. three OT loses show a lack of confidence and an inability for other players to step up.

Rios suspension and subsequent arrest certainly hurt, but honestly that wasn’t the whole ball game. Lance Hurdle overachieved last year and Haith has made a living now out of recruiting combo guards- he’s got three coming in next year. The problem is we haven’t had a pure point guard since Armando Surratt in the Perry Clark years.

Leonard Hamilton got lucky when we had a similar PG problem but was able to count on Vernon Jennings and John Salmons two very savvy players to handle the ball.

Coach Haith hoped James Dews or DeQuan Jones could help in the same way but it just did not work out.

Jones has been a bust thus far. Of the 23 five star recruits nationally from last year, he was ranked the 22nd best freshman or the 23 by Rivals last week: I cannot imagine how bad the guy below him was.

We still have a shot. If we beat VT, we then have a shot against Carolina: not a good one, but a shot because Lawson is hurt.

We have some quality wins but last week’s loss to GT killed our RPI sending us down about 12 spots and giving us our first loss to a team ranked outside the top 100 all year.

That loss killed the argument many like Andy Katz of ESPN were making for us, that we had no bad losses.
