Green Named Brian Piccolo Award Co-Winner

Miami Hurricanes redshirt junior defensive end Shayon Green has been named the 2012 Brian Piccolo Award Co-Winner. The award is given to the “most courageous” football player in the ACC and Green earned co-winner honors with Florida State running back Chris Thompson as both have overcome injury during their careers.

Green had to overcome four major injuries the past few seasons. Two right-knee ACL tears and a dislocation that have caused him to miss the better part of his first three seasons, starting in 2009.

In 2012, Green finally took the field healthy and rejuvenated, where he led MIami in tackles this season (67 total – 38 unassisted). Green also had two tackles for loss and a forced fumble recovery. Green stepped up as a leader this season and proved to be the first Hurricanes defensive lineman to lead the team in tackles in over three decades.

“Shayon is an amazing individual with an unparalleled work ethic,” head coach Al Golden said. “I cannot think of anyone who exemplifies the ideals of Brian Piccolo or is more deserving of this award than him. He has overcome a dislocated wrist and three separate knee surgeries to become our leading tackler and team captain. His commitment and perseverance is an inspiration to us all.”

Nine seasons in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Green is the third Miami player to earn the prestigious award. Frank Gore won it in 2004, while Glenn Sharpe earned the honor in 2006.

For those unfamiliar with Piccolo’s story and courageous tale, more on that here.
