Gainesville Regional : Florida 5, Miami 4

2-0 fourth inning lead squandered.

4-2 deficit turned into 4-4 tie entering bottom of the seventh.

Ten Miami hits to Florida’s eleven. Four Hurricane errors to zero by the Gators. Ten left on base by UM.

Seven straight losses to the Gators and Miami has now dropped ten of eleven to Florida.

Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory. Relegated to the loser’s bracket.

12pm ET showdown with Jacksonville.

Three win needed to reach the Super Regional.

Back-to-back wins over number two Florida needed to advance, if Miami gets past Jacksonville.

39 straight post-season appearances feels hollow at 37-22 and one game from elimination. Even worse, the premise of a third straight season ending at the hands of Florida, on their turf.

In need of a miracle.

Expecting nothing of the sort.

Hoping to be proven wrong.

  1. The sad state of UM Baseball ever since choking away the first game of the '08 CWS. Even with ALL that went wrong yesterday, the most baffling thing to me was not bunting after leading off the 9th with a Melendres double and no outs in the inning. You have a guy at the plate in Rodriguez who was 1-for-4 and didn't look great swinging the bat, why not lay it down and play the percentages? Chances are you go into the bottom half up 5-4 with all the pressure on UF. There's no way around it, this was a TERRIBLE loss.

  2. Ah yes, hot garbage against an up and up Florida team.

EICHORST, ARE YOU SEEING THIS?? HAVE YOU READ ANYTHING OF THIS SORT??

  3. Can we hire a real coaching staff now?? 11-0 in the third? Lol it's just youth huh? Those new bats sure do suck huh?? 1-11 against Florida and O'Sullivan..

  4. "Had enough?"

That was the fundamental question that faced former AD Kirby Hocutt when USF scored on Miami to end the season last year. Kirby decided he had and moved in a new direction.

Miami never should have had to play Jacksonville today. They had Florida beat yesterday. They had Virginia beat in the ACC Tournament.

Miami is a talented team with poor coaching. There is no other excuse given the number of errors. Errors are a result of poor coaching. Yes, the players are the ones committing them, but you can't tell me that somehow Florida, FSU and Virginia (heck, even Stetson) has better players who are athletically head and shoulders above the kids in Coral Gables.

    So I'll ask it again:

    "Had enough?"

  5. One more point:

A lot is often made of the fact that UM can only give 11.5 partial scholarships, which means that the student-athletes have to foot part of the bill. Therefore, this means that the better kids are going to the "less expensive" state schools.

Tuition at UM (according to the College Board) is $39,654.

Stanford University (35-20, playing North Carolina in the Super Regional) costs $38,700.

The University of Virginia (52-9, playing UC Irvine in the Super Regional) costs $11,794 for in-state, and $36,788 for non-Virginians. (18 players on the roster are from Virginia, 16 are non-Virginian)

Vanderbilt University (50-10, playing Oregon State in the Super Regionals) costs $38,952 in tuition and fees alone.

Is it possible some potential players are discouraged from attending UM due to the high tuition? Of course. But no more so than those kids going to Stanford, Vanderbilt, Virginia or other private institutions (or out-of-state tuition for public universities).

So I'll ask it again …

    "Had Enough?"
