It almost sounds like some kind of ‘420’ prank but in reality it’s another hit to the linebacking corps of the Miami Hurricanes.
Sophomore linebacker Gabe Terry was hit with felony possession of marijuana and resisting arrest (without violence). Terry was said to be in possession of 28.6 grams of pot, was arrested early Friday morning and bail was set at $5,000 for possession and an additional $1,000 bond for the resisting without violence charge.
Terry was part of the 2012 recruiting class for Al Golden and the Miami Hurricanes. He came to Coral Gables from Palm Beach Central and aside from football, was a standout wrestler in high school.
Terry is currently listed as “suspended indefinitely” but has been removed from the roster – and based on the charge, he absolutely should be.
For this Miami Hurricanes program to get back to where it needs to be, these types of situations and these selfish players need to go.
When on scholarship at the University of Miami, with the skills to play football and so many life-opportunities in front of you, it is a world-class shame to blow it over something to avoidable and idiotic.
Busted with a gram that was for personal use; you can work your way out of the doghouse for that. Twenty-eight times the amount; we’re talking about intent to distribute and a little one-man operation.
All of this is especially tragic because of Terry’s back-story. His father is serving a life sentence for murder while his mother is still trying to clean things up after doing time for her role in a bank robbery.
Terry had his run-ins with the law as well, arrested at fourteen and hit with burglary and larceny charges. Instead of jail he was offered a break – a trek to Middle America and time at a center for wayward youth (in Nebraska), with charges dropped.
Half a decade after that time at Boys Town, Terry is back where this all started – in much more trouble than anyone could’ve ever expected.
Here’s hoping Terry gets a second chance to turn it around. Miami won’t be the place, but wherever he winds up, maybe he’ll get it right next time. Wishing him the best.
UM, too, as this program cannot seem to buy a break regarding linebacker depth and development at the position. Terry’s pending departure will make for three lost linebackers since the first of the year, with Miami and Gionni Paul “mutually parting ways” in January and Eddie Johnson officially signing on with a community college in Mississippi this past week.
