Canes Drop Heartbreaker To Hokies

One defensive stand was again the difference and in the end, Miami took a late lead and surrendered it just as quickly en route to a 38-35 loss in Blacksburg on Saturday.

Jacory Harris was 13-of-21 on the day, throwing for 267 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions while running back Lamar Miller put up 166 yards on 18 carries with one score. Miami had 519 total yards on the day in the loss.

The difference again was the defense, or lack thereof, as the Canes allowed 482 total yards and let Logan Thomas have the game of his career, going 23-of-25 for 310 yards with three touchdowns. Jarrett Boykin was the primary target, with seven receptions for 120 yards and on the ground David Wilson ran for 128 yards on 23 carries.

Penalties again reared their ugly head, with Miami getting tripped up 9 times for 84 yards.

The Canes drop to 2-3 on the season and prepare for a road trip to North Carolina next Saturday. Stay tuned for full recap coming Sunday.

  1. A great preformance on one side of the ball. For me with the “Golden Era” as with any program I look for improvements. When the D problems are worked out the Canes will win the “Heart Attack Games”.
Solid Running, Passing and Special Teams, just can’t get off the field on D!
Lookin to the rest of the schedule

  2. I was really surprised the Canes were even able to hang around in this game. They showed a bit of heart. Again, pathetic defense was the downfall of this team. I still dont see this team winning more than 5 games.

  3. All I can say is that I hope Coach Golden is all over D’Onofrio’s ass after another pathetic performance from the defense. They should be called The Red Sea because they part perfectly for opposing offenses, and DBs give 10 yard cushions or get lost altogether. Thomas only throws 2 incompletions all game, and has time to brush his teeth back there because we don’t bring anyone aside from the ineffective front four. I just don’t get it. The offense battled and I think we found the perfect formula in the second half for what we have to do for the rest of the year. Too bad we go to a soft zone in the last two minutes and let then move down the field in chunks to win the game while we were fittingly out of positiontime after time.

  4. I am going to stop attending away games until they start winning. Just can’t handle it anymore.

  5. This Al Golden team has played hard and with passion in every game! Canes will finish strong!! This is the best runnning back we have had in over 5 years, Jacory is playing smart, and the D is young!

Golden will turn this around next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. That was a tough one, if you had asked me if I thought they could lose when Jacory has no interceptions and 3 touchdowns I would have said no chance. As mistake prone as Jacory has been in the past you cannot waste such a preformance.

  7. Once again the Hurricanes fall victim not only penalties, but to terrible coaching decisions. Instead of changing to a five man rush early, Logan Thomas was allowed to have a field day with all the time in the world to find receivers, which he did again and again, and again. Instead of getting three points on the board early with a field goal, the Hurricanes go for it on fourth down and come up empty. Last game we saw Miami pass two times on third down and one yard to go, both passes were incomplete and led to a change of possession. If the Hurricanes simply had one person watch their games on ESPN and followed the advice of the commentators, they would be in much better shape than they are now. It’s one thing to lose games because the other team is just better and beats us, it’s another to lose because simply, obvious adjustments aren’t made and basic football logic isn’t followed.

    1. Did you think maybe the defense sucks because of the total lack of depth there is? Our defensive line isn’t the problem in the passing game. The problem is we have terrible cornerbacks. Brandon Mcgee is terrible and I’m willing to admit he’s probably our best corner and at worse our third best. The defensive line isn’t getting pressure because every play the quarterback’s first read is always open so the balls out of his hand almost immediately. On top of that we’re down most of our best players on that side of the ball. This shouldn’t be put on the coaches though. This team is full of guys who’ve never really been coached up or expected to learn systems like this, so it’s not surprising to me they suck. Can we make it a full season even before we decide these coaches suck, maybe, just maybe, this could be a problem with the players we’ve seen play this way forever. I know the defense was better under Shannon, but they were also more talented and played a system that allowed them to just rely on their talent. Personally I think we have a team full of talent that’s been squandered by never being coached in any way on how they should prepare or play on this level. I figure we’ll end up winning around 7 games with 8 being the best we could hope for. This team reminds me of those probation teams with Butch. They’ve got some thorough bred horses on this team, but they just don’t have all the pieces yet.

  8. I can honestly say that this was J12 best game since his freshman year against FSU. They finally played a full 4 quarter game… Were not to far off from a 10 win season.. Keep moving in the right direction CANES…. We just need to get the nasty D back like we are suppose to have… Sean “Cobra” Spence is still running the show on D and all what we need is a few more to step it up on defense… Go Canes and get that W next week…..

  9. Sean “Cobra” Spence didn’t play his gap and gave up that last touchdown.

This “scheme” they’re trying to implement has even our best players screwed up.

    And 4 quarters??

The offense didn’t start firing until the second half. If they come out swinging that game is won, period.

This team is 5-7 at best and it’s not for lack of offense. The defense has become BEYOND a liability.

  10. I like this blog, I only wish there were more stories on a daily basis. Personally i’m tired of visiting the other boards (newspapers) and reading their blogs and seeing the ignorance that is spouted on there. Either A) they’re 13 or 14 year olds or B) they have NO football knowledge. I, just as the rest of you saw the same game and Fred, as much as the fake field goal hurt us, it didn’t kill us. That responsibility falls square on the shoulders of Coach D. Yes, his squad was hit early and often this season with suspensions and injuries but not putting pressure on Thomas really, really confuses me because Clemson gave everyone the blueprint last week on how to beat them. Blitz, blitz, blitz! All 3 times we pressured him, he messed up. He had a fumble, threw a pass beyond the line of scrimmage, and threw and errant 3rd down pass which resulted in a punt. The offense blew my mind; I live in Blacksburg and get to hear just how GREAT Bud Fosters defense is. BLAH, BLAH, BLAH!!!!!! EXPOSED for who they really are the last 2 weeks. Anyway, there’s my 2 cents I just hope the D makes some strides because if not; we’ll get it handed to us on several more occassions.
