… A Brief Statement From Al Golden

It was sort of a throwaway moment with the media earlier this week, but it really serves as a solid parting shot going into Florida State weekend.

Second-year Miami head coach Al Golden, when discussing the fact the Hurricanes have lost five of the last seven to the Seminoles, pointed out that all involved with this program should be harboring some anger regarding the gap between the two programs.

“We should be mad that they’re up there right now,” Golden said.

“And if you look at the way this rivalry has gone, it’s up to the other school to respond. They’re ahead of us right now. I recognize that. I hope we all recognize that, but now it’s our job to respond, whatever that means for the entire organization starting with me. Obviously we have an opportunity to do that Saturday night.”

An ‘opportunity’ is all anyone hopes for and the Canes will get that shot on Saturday night.

Is Florida State the better team right now? Yes. Does that mean Miami should pack it in – simply because outsiders, media members and bookies see this one as a landslide loss? Hell no.

It’s UM and FSU going toe-to-toe. The game is in Miami, where the Canes haven’t won, since pulling out a 16-10 overtime thriller in 2004.

For a lot of UM players, their final shot to make things right. Miami hasn’t beaten Florida State since the 2009 season – when the highly-touted Northwestern bunch were sophomores. It’s 2012 and just about all of those kids have moved on, as has any stranglehold the Canes used to have on this rivalry. (Between 2000 and 2004, UM won six straight against FSU.)

Golden said it — it’s Miami’s job to respond. He wants his players to be angry about that and come Saturday night, to do something about it.

  • What I like about Al is he doesn’t hesitate to say what he feels, some coaches give you canned answers and that’s all you get “RS come to mind”. You can feel the real passion when he speaks and he wants so badly to win for this School. I hope the players respond, and take what he says as a challenge. So I agree play angry on Saturday night, and the bottom line is to do something about it.

  • Indeed he is right. Unfortunately it's going to take another couple of recruiting classes (assuming Miami can weather the coming NCAA sanctions effectively) to get up to the level to compete with FSU. We just need to take this team for what it is, enjoy what we had in the past, and hope Coach Golden can turn things around. A winning season is still not out of the question this year - after all, Miami beat NC State ... who did beat FSU, so anything can happen.

Here's hoping for a win ... stranger things have happened!

    Go Canes!

  • Coach Golden should be bloody well CONCERNED bout' the ATROCIOUS defensive schemes his DECADES-LONG buddy employs! Eh. What say.
SEVEN games into the season, and still NO VAST IMPROVEMENT from that side of the L.O.S.
    Bon jour

  • Miami battled. We just don't have all the necessary players right now. The defense played their butts off, but wore down with all of the plays they were on the field. The offense didn't help much with a gimpy Morris, but it is what it is. We should have committed a little more to the run, if nothing else than to just rest the defense. We were in the game and just ran out of gas at the end. Hopefully the recruits in attendance took notice that this top 14 team couldn't shake us and that they could help us get over the hump next year. We could use LB Thomas, DT Bain and DT Nelson among others to get some depth on a depleted roster. We still have a glimmer of hope in the ACC but have to start next week with VTech and win out. We just need to make a few more plays and stay aggressive on both sides of the ball.

  • Kudos to Miami tonight. They were OUT-TALENTED and F.S.U. has the better coaching staff, arguably speaking. Yet the Hurricanes were in the game going into the fourth quarter.
Nonetheless, I absolutely believe beyond a SHADOW OF A DOUBT, that your Goldie made another CRUCIAL coaching decision, again ( See last weeks game against Carolina. ).
For instance, score is F.S.U. 16, Canes 10.
Miami has the ball deep inside the 20 yard line.
Canes face a 3rd and TWO!!! That's THIRID and two yards for a 1st down, and a possible T.D.
But what does Goldie and Fisher decide. They pass and an incompletion.
Now WHY didn't Miami run on 3rd and 2!!?? Yeah, yeah F.S.U had 8 in the box.
Yet, even a ONE YARD gain would've made a possible 4th and 1.
It just leaves wondering about some of the coaching decisions lately!
I TRUELY BELIEVE THAT critical coaching FAUX PAS change the intricacies of the game and F.S.U. took the MOMENTUM back.
Because the Noles' get the ball back and procede to score a T.D. on the following possesion.... F.S.U. 23, Hurricanes 13.
And Miami never recovered from an up-hill battle in the 4th quarter.
Thankfully Miami has a MUCH NEEDED break until their encounter with a Va. Tech.
And believe it or not Cane rUffians. THAT IS A MUST WIN GAME FOR THE HURRICANES!!!!!! No if's, but's or Miami is YOUNG and what not!
    Bon soir

    • Disagree that Florida State has the better coaching staff. By your rationale, Miami coaches deserve the accolades as Florida State had the horses but took a long time to finally pull away.

Miami also had 4 penalties for 25 yards to Florida State's 12 penalties for 121 yards. That's coaching and the Noles were undisciplined.

For a pissed off, shouldn't-have-lost-to-NC-State national title contender, they should've curb stomped Miami to prove that there's a huge gap between the two programs.

All the Noles showed was that the Canes aren't too far off and are a few classes behind.

  • " 3rd and 2 and we throw a fade to a true freshman playing in his second play of the season??

Fisch?? run the ball man. " ZAKEE
    ---------------
Bloody Voila! This loyal, Hurricane fan is one of the FEW relatively, objective ASTUTE bloggers!
Again, I absolutely believe this was a CRUCIAL mistake on the part of Goldie and Fisher-dude!!!

  • A NOT 100% Hurricane RB in the person of Johnson had MORE carries than teammate Mike James last night. Eh. What say.
Now, that it was what I CALL MAJOR, MAJOR coaching blunders by BOTH Goldie and Fisch!!! No if's, but's or maybe's!!
Chit, F.S.U. was ready to be CHIT-CANNED back to the Northern spheres of REDNECK Florida. Yet, Miami's O-coaches ABANDONED the running game and LET the Nole's back into the game. Go BLOODY FIGURES!!!!
By the way, BECAUSE Coach Stoops D-Nole's are quicker, faster and PHYSICAL. Miami shouldn't have USE Mike James MORE!!! Espcially coming out of the halftime intermission!!
So, the bottom line is U'all loyal Hurricane fandom better HOPE Miami defeats a AVERAGE and SUSPECT Beamer Ball team. OTHERWISE, the odds FAVOR Miami going into the TANK the rest of the season. Eh. What say.
By the way, I YAPPED previously that Duke would be a VERY, VERY, VERY " dangerous " road game for the Canes. SEE Duke's victory over Carolina. And that game with the Blue Devils will be their SENIOR DAY GAME. Bloody OuCH!!!
Nonetheless, I touted Miami would finish 7-5 this season!
    Bon jour

    • I don't always agree with your points, macjones, but I lost my voice screaming "run the ball with JAMES" last night. A bigger power back like #5 was the answer. Not Duke. Huge blunder. Felt the same against North Carolina where they were running outside sweeps with #8 instead of pounding MJ up the middle and between the tackles.

As for Duke, their next four games, in order - @Florida State, Clemson, @Georgia Tech and Miami. Their 6-2 record will be 7-5, at best and their 3-1 ACC record will be 4-4. Miami still controls its destiny in the topsy-turvy Coastal division.

    • Don't know what game you were watching, then. Miami's defense was hitting hard and that offense capitalized early ... and then Miami ran out of gas against one of the best, most loaded teams in the country. 16-13 early in the fourth quarter before a better team in Florida State got theirs.

You see those hits that jarred those fumbles? You think that defense wasn't TRYING to prove a point? Please. UM lacked the horses, not the heart.

  • Thankfully, Miami has a much-neede break prior to their Thursday night encounter Va. Teck. Because these Canes are worn down both mentally and physically.
Nonetheless, I do HOPE both Goldie and his DECADES-LONG buddy truely UNDERSTAND that Beamer Ball LOVES to defeat the Hurricanes!! No matter if Miami is Miami, or the Hurricanes are PUTRID!
Because I can guarantee the Hookies will be ready to play!!!
By the way, I was absolutely WRONG bout' Morris not playing. So much for moi's FRIVOLOUS, FEEBLE guarantee's! LMFAO
    Bon jour
