Team Olsen is keeping it in the U Family as Kevin Olsen, four-star quarterback prospect out of New Jersey and brother of former UM tight end Greg Olsen, is headed to Coral Gables.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder chose Miami over Auburn, South Carolina and Wisconsin, with offers from Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Notre Dame, Michigan, North Carolina, Georgia, Rutgers, Virginia and Iowa.
“Miami just felt like the right place for me,” Olsen said. “I am excited about playing under Al Golden, and I feel like he can bring Miami back to the place it was when my brother was there.”
Olsen threw for 1,686 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2011 and is the fourth quarterback signed in the Golden era, joining Preston Dewey, Gray Crow and two-sport athlete, David Thompson.
Olsen is the No. 77 player in the nation and the third ESPN 150 prospect to commit to Miami’s 2013 lass. He’a also the No. 7-ranked pocket passing quarterback and the No. 2 player in the state of New Jersey. He has been selected to play in the UnderArmour All-American game and Elite 11.
Olsen doesn’t look to be an early enrollee and the reason the “… for now” was added to the headline, a little wiggle room the quarterback left himself regarding Miami’s future.
While his commitment is said to be “100 percent”, he did state that would be the case, “unless something drastic happens”.
With UM waiting to hear back from the NCAA regarding the Nevin Shaprio scandal and potential sanctions, loss of scholarships, etc. – the only thing that could change Olsen’s mind would be the severity of the punishment.
For now, Cane fans can celebrate the addition of Olsen and can continue praying for mercy from the NCAA. Welcome to the U Family!
